When I was in school this wasn't an issue. We were Americans learning in english and were taught love of country. Immigrants had to simulate and learn english as part of becoming a citizen. @kimeetha I personally don't care what language we learn (though I've been studying Spanish for three years and have started self-learning Mandarin Chinese), as long as they DO learn one. Just the very state of being multilingual is an immeasurable benefit to American workers, especially those set on doing global work.

As an English speaker, I found Spanish much easier than Mandarin as it's fairly close despite not being a fellow Romance language, but it was also the first foreign language I learned. By the way, your English (at least written) is pretty good. As for speaking it, just keep practicing! I'm precisely the same way with the other languages I've learned. I'm pretty sure it's a universal thing with language-learning; don't worry too much.

But it's America! We should speak the language of the land, like... Cherokee or Navajo. Needless to say, this is one of those issues I feel particularly strong on. I love languages and studying them. It's beyond ignorant to assume that immigrants do not make at least an attempt to learn English. The US lags behind many other nations in the global workforce due to the fact that those countries have workers learn two, three, or in some extreme cases, even four languages, usually including English.
I am not against any one speaking their own native language. But I do not think that we should be required to learn spanish. Back in the 1960's, the deaf were not allowed to learn sign language as they wanted the deaf to talk not sign. It is not a handicap to be spanish speaking. The problem is that the spanish speaking never learn english.

I just want to clear up some of the confusion with "English-Only" initiatives/bills. The "English-Only" law would require those in government offices and business to speak English. What that means is that people who work at government offices and businesses must be able to fluntly read write and speak in the English language. This would not prevent translators being availible for people who needing or preventing broadcast of foreign language media. Just some information! Thanks!

Normaly when you come to a country, you learn the language, i'm a non english speaker, and if i were tro go to Australia, USA, UK and Canada, i would speak only in English, well in the case of Canada, i would speak in French as well as in English.

the fact is, that english is not the oldest language in the US, not even the first european laguage that came into the US Territory. (Spanish was there far before) many of the spanish speakers (majority) are recent inmigrants. but many others are americans whose families have been in the US long before the first english speakers came. Spanish didnt go, and english will not go either. they fill eventually find and equilibrium

when i was in school in the US in El Paso in the border i was in bilinguial class, and i thought it was perfect, i knew English, and I would practice my Spanish so I wouldnt forget it.
Once i was at the store with my mom, and were are both Mexican, and I know English quite well, so i was talking in Spanish, and some lady got very mad at me, she said speak English your in America, 1st of all US doesn't have an official language so i can speak whatever i want, and 2nd America is a continent, and Mexico is in the continent of America. Besides i know English, Spanish, French and learning Chinese. so i say no english should not be the official language.
Being American is not a race it is an idea. We have enough barriers in this country. Language should not be one of them. The one thing that unites Americans of all race's and ethnicity's is English. The very least you can do for the country that has taken you in, is learn and speak the language. If that is too much to ask then go back to whatever country you worked so hard to get away from. We accept you, your culture, your race, but not your language.

Where do I as an American fit into all this. If my government wanted me to learn another language why didn't they tell me when I was young. or tell my parents or make it manditory. Everyone SHOULD learn English because it is our common language but government should print documents in other languages, especially Spanish and French whose presence in this country dates as far back as English and whose speakers have been living in the same area since well before they became part of the US.
The US government should have required you to take a second language in school, they didn't but that does not mean we should not ask our government to give that opportunity to the younger generations. What you don't understand is that I am not nor is anyone against immigrants learning English, I am simply against forcing them to lose their heritage tongue. You don't have to change. English is and will continue to be the common language of the US, there is no service you cant get in English.

Did you know that Alexander Hamilton was born in Barbados? Did you know that Martin Van Buren's native language was Dutch? How many immigrants are fighting in Iraq today? Did you know that Puerto Ricans who have been US citizens since 1917 and speak Spanish have been fighting in this country's wars since WWI? That they were subject to the draft in Vietnam? Did you know that French-speaking Cajuns from Louisiana served as interpreters in Europe during the World Wars? Less than 5% of people in Louisiana speak French today, even though it is one of the state's official languages.
Why have New Mexicans been forced to give up their language and heritage when they've been living in that region since before the founding of Jamestown? English is not my first language but i've been living in the US since the age of 7 and my ability to speak two languages fluently is an asset to this country. Why wouldn't I teach my kids Spanish so that they too can grow up speaking two languages?

You can find people who hate the US even among natural born US citizens. We've found several working for the Taliban and Al-qaeda. But that is the minority. Less than 10% of the US population is foreign born today, a number that is still well below what it was 100 years ago. The requirements you state are met by most immigrants and virtually all of their children. The only reason spanish survives as a spoken language in the US is because of immigration because within 2 generations people speak only English. I'm not sure what side you are assuming I'm hearing about.
The reason why a US born white non-hispanic American cannot argue against immigration with someone from another group without being called a racist is because our issues today don't happen in a historical vacuum. It would be naive of anyone to think that our current immigration problems have totally immune to race issues. We have come a long way in this country but racism still exists. Race is very relevant to any immigration debate given that this country's history of immigration is one characterized by exclusion of certain people because of their racial background. Irish immigrants in the 1800s were not always welcomed because they were Catholic. Ever heard about the Chinese Exclusion Act? What about the racial quotas of the early 20th century to limit immigration from E Europe because these people were deemed inferior and unassimilable.
How many boats filled with Jews were denied entry into American ports in the 1930s (during Nazi Germany) because the quotas for their countries of origin (mostly eastern Europe) had been filled? All immigration laws before the 1960s in the US were aimed at creating a white America. Part of being a patriot is learning to recognize our country's historical faults so that we don't repeat them in the future.
Even today in the 21st century with a black president our country still makes it harder for non-whites to come to the US. Try adopting a child in Russia and a child in Nigeria. See how much longer it will take for the US government to allow your nigerian-born adopted child to enter the US compared to the children you adopted from Russia.

The vast majority of immigrants now and 100 yrs ago that have made their way to this country have done so in search of better jobs not because they want to be Americans. The desire to become an American develops after one lives in the US and learns to appreciate all it has to offer. Often it takes more than one generation. It always has. Many Mexicans want to come here just to work and not to live permanently but our immigration system does not permit that.
And how is doing the jobs no Americans are willing to do an exploitation of this country. The only reason why there is immigration to the US is because there are employers who need them. If immigrants were not hired they would not come here. It's very easy for you to say that speaking English should be mandatory. Tell that to the parents who work 2 jobs each so that their kids can go to college, learn english and be assets to this country.
If you and I are sitting in a table eating and I have someone else on that table that can speak English and Spanish I would not speak Spanish to that person in front of you because it is rude for me to do that. You are putting expectations on immigrants that have not been met by most early 20th century immigrants that settled in ethnic enclaves in the US. Italian-Americans settled in ethnic enclaves in NYC and the immigrants themselves often died without leaving the enclave and without gaining a working knowledge of English. No one would argue today that Italian-Americans are not fully assimilated. Germans even set up their own German language schools when they arrived.

I have never mentioned race in any of my comments so please read more carefully. I've talked about language and immigrants who come from all continents and speak many languages. The fact that your grandmother is from Mexico is a clear example that immigrants are not only learning English but within 2 generations no longer speak their heritage language.
I never thought of it that way. I never thought of it as I had lost my heritage. My grandmother always said that we didn't speak spanish because we were American now. I don't think people should not learn their heritage language. I do believe that it should be mandatory to learn English. Without communication there is no community, no comradery, no Unity.
Well, your grandmother has an incorrect idea of what being American is all about. In northern New Mexico there are spanish-speaking families who have been living in that area since Juan de Oñate conquered that region for Spain in the 1590s and have been US citizens since 1848. Since statehood in 1912, New Mexico has published all laws in English and Spanish and these people should not only have the right to speak but also promote their language.
For almost 2 centuries French was suppressed in Louisiana. When it became a state in 1812, most residents of Louisiana spoke French. In fact some of the first governors didn't even speak English. Today less than 5% of that state's population speak French. It was not until recently that the state government made French an official language. Having bilinguals does not hard but enriches this country.
Asking immigrants to learn English is natural and they are doing so. Although working class immigrants who immigrate as adults often lack adequate language skills, practically all of their children born in the US speak the language perfectly. Immigrants are not refusing to learn English. No one in their right mind would refuse to learn English if given the opportunity to do so since speaking English gives you important job opportunities.
Here in Vegas not all speak English. Young and old, they don't feel that they have to. As an American, I may be able to learn another language, but which one do I learn. Spanish would be cool, but soon it's going to be the Chineese who are becoming just as overwhelming. Should our employers be forced to produce all documents in multiple languages or should everyone learn english. More so, Speak english.
In Las Vegas and everywhere else in the US immigrants who arrive at a young age and the children of immigrants who go through this country's educational system which is in english speak english fluently. Statistics show that almost 100% of US-born hispanics speak English very well. If you want to learn Chinese you are more than welcome to, it is an important world language but don't forget that you live a few hours drive from the world's largest spanish-speaking country.

Just the very state of being multilingual is an immeasurable benefit to American workers, especially those set on doing global work.

As an English speaker, I found Spanish much easier than Mandarin as it's fairly close despite not being a fellow Romance language, but it was also the first foreign language I learned. By the way, your English (at least written) is pretty good. As for speaking it, just keep practicing! I'm precisely the same way with the other languages I've learned. I'm pretty sure it's a universal thing with language-learning; don't worry too much.

It's beyond ignorant to assume that immigrants do not make at least an attempt to learn English. Back in the 1960's, the deaf were not allowed to learn sign language as they wanted the deaf to talk not sign. It is not a handicap to be spanish speaking. I just want to clear up some of the confusion with "English-Only" initiatives/bills. The "English-Only" law would require those in government offices and business to speak English. What that means is that people who work at government offices and businesses must be able to fluntly read write and speak in the English language. This would not prevent translators being availible for people who needing or preventing broadcast of foreign language media. Just some information! Thanks!

Normaly when you come to a country, you learn the language, i'm a non english speaker, and if i were tro go to Australia, USA, UK and Canada, i would speak only in English, well in the case of Canada, i would speak in French as well as in English.

the fact is, that english is not the oldest language in the US, not even the first european laguage that came into the US Territory. (Spanish was there far before) many of the spanish speakers (majority) are recent inmigrants. but many others are americans whose families have been in the US long before the first english speakers came. Spanish didnt go, and english will not go either. they fill eventually find and equilibrium

Once i was at the store with my mom, and were are both Mexican, and I know English quite well, so i was talking in Spanish, and some lady got very mad at me, she said speak English your in America, 1st of all US doesn't have an official language so i can speak whatever i want, and 2nd America is a continent, and Mexico is in the continent of America. Besides i know English, Spanish, French and learning Chinese. so i say no english should not be the official language.

Being American is not a race it is an idea. We have enough barriers in this country. Language should not be one of them. The one thing that unites Americans of all race's and ethnicity's is English. The very least you can do for the country that has taken you in, is learn and speak the language. If that is too much to ask then go back to whatever country you worked so hard to get away from. We accept you, your culture, your race, but not your language.

Where do I as an American fit into all this. If my government wanted me to learn another language why didn't they tell me when I was young. or tell my parents or make it manditory. If speaking English does not unite us, not speaking English sure puts up an uneccesary barrier. The US government should have required you to take a second language in school, they didn't but that does not mean we should not ask our government to give that opportunity to the younger generations. Why have New Mexicans been forced to give up their language and heritage when they've been living in that region since before the founding of Jamestown? English is not my first language but i've been living in the US since the age of 7 and my ability to speak two languages fluently is an asset to this country. As a U.S.born citizen who doesn't speak any other language than English I only ask that those that do speak other languages to be more self conscious about where it is spoken. if you are in a room full of people speaking English and you start in with Mandarin that is just rude, not unlawful, just rude.

I am not saying people should not learn English. Immigrants are learning English. What xenophobes in the US are doing today is asking of immigrants to come here and immediately learn English. That is virtually impossible when you have to work, often times for min wage just to pay your rent. How will they make the time to learn it. Less than 10% of the US population is foreign born today, a number that is still well below what it was 100 years ago. The requirements you state are met by most immigrants and virtually all of their children. The only reason spanish survives as a spoken language in the US is because of immigration because within 2 generations people speak only English. Race is very relevant to any immigration debate given that this country's history of immigration is one characterized by exclusion of certain people because of their racial background. Irish immigrants in the 1800s were not always welcomed because they were Catholic. Ever heard about the Chinese Exclusion Act? What about the racial quotas of the early 20th century to limit immigration from E Europe because these people were deemed inferior and unassimilable.

How many boats filled with Jews were denied entry into American ports in the 1930s (during Nazi Germany) because the quotas for their countries of origin (mostly eastern Europe) had been filled? All immigration laws before the 1960s in the US were aimed at creating a white America. The vast majority of immigrants now and 100 yrs ago that have made their way to this country have done so in search of better jobs not because they want to be Americans. The desire to become an American develops after one lives in the US and learns to appreciate all it has to offer. Often it takes more than one generation. It always has. Many Mexicans want to come here just to work and not to live permanently but our immigration system does not permit that.

You are putting expectations on immigrants that have not been met by most early 20th century immigrants that settled in ethnic enclaves in the US. Italian-Americans settled in ethnic enclaves in NYC and the immigrants themselves often died without leaving the enclave and without gaining a working knowledge of English. No one would argue today that Italian-Americans are not fully assimilated. Germans even set up their own German language schools when they arrived.

Well, your grandmother has an incorrect idea of what being American is all about. In northern New Mexico there are spanish-speaking families who have been living in that area since Juan de Oñate conquered that region for Spain in the 1590s and have been US citizens since 1848. Since statehood in 1912, New Mexico has published all laws in English and Spanish and these people should not only have the right to speak but also promote their language.

For almost 2 centuries French was suppressed in Louisiana. When it became a state in 1812, most residents of Louisiana spoke French. In fact some of the first governors didn't even speak English. Today less than 5% of that state's population speak French. It was not until recently that the state government made French an official language. Having bilinguals does not hard but enriches this country.

Asking immigrants to learn English is natural and they are doing so. Although working class immigrants who immigrate as adults often lack adequate language skills, practically all of their children born in the US speak the language perfectly. Immigrants are not refusing to learn English. No one in their right mind would refuse to learn English if given the opportunity to do so since speaking English gives you important job opportunities.

Here in Vegas not all speak English. Young and old, they don't feel that they have to. As an American, I may be able to learn another language, but which one do I learn. Spanish would be cool, but soon it's going to be the Chineese who are becoming just as overwhelming. In Las Vegas and everywhere else in the US immigrants who arrive at a young age and the children of immigrants who go through this country's educational system which is in english speak english fluently. Statistics show that almost 100% of US-born hispanics speak English very well. If you want to learn Chinese you are more than welcome to, it is an important world language but don't forget that you live a few hours drive from the world's largest spanish-speaking country.
