Charleston into Lindy Hop (or how one unsightly dance was transformed into another)? My understanding has always been that the Charleston divided into two modern ballroom numbers - the Quickstep and the Slow Foxtrot. I have no knowledge of the origins of the Lindy Hop and really wouldn't wish to.

@Czerniakowska Not quite. The Foxtrot pre-dates the Charleston and was an attempt to fit the 3/4 waltz into 4/4 music. The foxtrot, or rather it's vernacular forms the single, double and triple shag, gave birth to swing dances like the balboa and collegiate shag.

The quickstep is the English response to the Charleston. It is essentially the foxtrot with some Charleston inspired moves, danced to fast jazz. The lindy hop is a descendent of the Charleston, rather than a dance inspired by it.
