Hi, you have just encountered every dove owner's problem. Actually figuring out what sex the dove is very difficult even for experienced owners who know where and how to look. But eventually you will be able to see who is who when at about 4 month mark, maybe earlier the male starts cooo-cooo ing. Only males do that, females can make sounds, but not the constant shouting like the male. You might also see the male try to "do the thing" to the female, but that is usually later.
I love it when they reach this size. Every time they start food begging, the parents look at them for a second like, "go get your own seed, kid." And then they go right ahead and feed them anyways.
Yes, the doves are actually one of the less intelligent birds, but they are very good parents from what I've observed. They are extremely careful, for example, when one parent gets up from the egg and another covers it. They will not leave it without warmth. They can also be feeding their offspring even when offspring is full size and eats by itself. If they feel threatened when they are on the nest they will try to attack the human hand or another dove by pecking
Hi I was hoping to get some advice, two collared doves come to my garden everyday and the female has started to look rather big, I think she's expecting. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what I should try and feed her or if there is anything I can do for them like leave out twigs??? Any help would be wonderful. Thank you.
Hi, usually you won't be able to identify whether the female is carrying an egg. In case of pigeons and doves it is a sort of adaptation so that the predator would not be able to identify which one is which, male or female. If predator saw fatter one they'd grab them. Same with their babies. They only come out of the nest when they are fluffy resembling adult size. I recommend any bright yellow seed or pieces of bread. If they are wild they want more calories. Continued.
@StopFear Thank you for all this information it was really nice of you to take the time to answer my comment. Can I just ask one little question? Is there any chance I'll see her young at some point? Do they follow their parents?
Also, if you give them any twigs, sticks, or branches they may pick them up. But usually their nests are hidden and you might not know where they took the twigs. Depending what your yard looks like , if there are quiet safe places they could nest anywhere. If you check nest designs online, you can see that they can nest in any box or crevices near windows or roofs. One time there were pigeons who came in the corridor window and made a nest and chicks in a cardboard box
Forgot to mention. If you want to attract the doves even more. You can provide them with not only seeds and bread (make to never ever give them rice! or they'll die) They also often like green food, maybe broccoli or apple pieces. Those things usually are required for vitamins for indoor birds, but I think wild birds might like it. If they learn it is always there they'll eventually try to stay where the food is, or nearby.
Specialized pet stores with supplies usually have that. Some online sites have instructions on how to make it. We tried feeding the baby pigeon using liquid formula like we saw online, but they would not take it. The parents feed them in a unique way which is hard to imitate. When they are small and started to eat their own food (which they do very quick, before 30th day of their life, depending how hungry) then you can feed them with normal small seed
@SuperKikiCupcake I have had doves for 7 yrs or so. Mine hatched 5 babies. (when I didnt take the eggs out) Sometimes doves are just stupid. Thats honestly my advice. My male dove got a egg glued to his feathers, they broke some ect. Eventually they will get it right. Just make sure they have lots of food, the special baby mix, and nesting material.
I got my white dove when she was 3 months old, so I missed that adorable flappy flappy of the wings! She is 5 years old now and just a bundle of silly joy. Thanks for sharing such a precious video.
I have a pair of white doves that finally laid two eggs. It's been about 15 days and nothing, but she sits on it 24/7. Just wondering what the incubation period is? Can't wait for my little one :)
@LeelouAmagon The normal incubation eggs for most breeds of doves is between fourteen and eighteen days. Bear in mind, though, this incubation period does not start until the entire clutch of eggs (usually two) has been laid, and may vary give or take a day or two.
@fantabulousK is it unusual ( i cant spell xD i am only 12 :P ) if my doves lay ther eggs on the same day about an hour from eachother? just wandering :) they ahve layed a third generation now xD
@breyernakotalover Totally. It's like a litter, just with shells - even human babies if that's easier. They can come as quickly as 10 minutes or as slowly as 10 hours, and there are so many variables that it's impossible for me to tell you what time frame is/isn't acceptable for any dove to lay its eggs. PERSONALLY, if MY dove were laying and it didn't come out within about 10-12 hours I'd probably call my vet as a precautionary measure in case the bird is in distress or the egg is stuck.
@fantabulousK one more thing, the egg that is almost hactched.. has a bit of blood on the shell.. is that ok? liek normal to have a little blood? or is that bad?
@breyernakotalover Not sure, dove eggs are very fragile and don't have waterproof membranes like chicken eggs or other birds so sometimes if your bird is calcium defficient they can even be born without a shell altogether! But my guess is one of three things happened, the first is your mother dove is hurt and bled onto the egg. Second guess is your egg is hatching and the blood is coming out a crack you can't see. Third is that your egg has a hairline crack and the blood is oozing out.
@breyernakotalover What I suggest is check your female dove and if she'll let you (AND ONLY IF SHE'S COMPLETELY FINE WITH THIS) have a peek at the egg. Touching and moving it as little as possible and wash your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water before you do it make sure your hands are sanitary and not cold. Because like I said no membrane so anything that is on your hands will go right through to the chick inside. If there's a crack then you know, if there isn't then you know too.
@breyernakotalover If it's the mother's blood then I'm not sure what do to but like if it's been on there for a bit then bacteria will start to eat at the blood and I'm not sure if that's okay for the egg or not, I'd phone your vet and just ask if it's okay if that's the case. If it's the blood of the chick then I'd say leave it till 24-48 hours after the first chick hatches and if it still hasnt hatched then you know it was a crack in the shell and that your chick is dead. Hope not!

Thanks so much for answering. I didn't know there was a special baby mix. Is that
something you mix up yourself or is it in pet food stores?
