I had never heard of Joan until a stereo salesman friend used her stuff for an audition of equipment he was trying to sell me, in , I believe 1978. I bought the piece, but made him give me the album. she is a super singer, but her back-up band is amazing, great musicians.

This may sound like The Noisettes' 'Never Forget You' as the chorus, i think the black girl copied Joan's lyrics of 'Me Myself I' as the bridge chorus, but the original is now excluded on many compilation albums.

But it only remains on Joan's greatest hits compilation.

A lot of artists were bigger than Armatrading, which is why her music is not only relevant but valuable. During a time when artists like her were not considered "commercial material", her company and producers stood behind her while she wrote/produced/performed her own music, by her own right. She is truly one artist who has been under-appreciated in her time, and is still persevering in music to date, all for the love of it. Just like the likes of Duran Duran.

Man, it never fails. You get a female performer who writes or performs consistently strong material and the cry soon goes up of whether or not she's gay.
