  • I'm not good at this, but I've heard that the lack of green color in the leaves is a sign that you need more iron

  • you need lights

  • Youg comeing along better and better keep up the good stuff.. Get your self 1 0r 2 single t-5 strip lights 4 ft and things would take off for you by 2000%.. Happy growing :)

  • Nutrient burn.. reduce your chemicals and double check pH and make sure its 5.3. That will take care of those yellowing edged leafs.

  • you need more light you live in shitty england where its always shitty outside bad teeth bad weather bad food

  • maybe use mylar instead of the green stuff on the gutters 2 give your babies lil more litght =)

  • you should have strip of black underneath to block light and a white strip on top to reflect light (or mylar)...........green is a poor choice.......you can buy a timer that is 4 min off/1 min on......it is called a fixed cycle timer......check out discount hydroponics

  • 2 things 1st- Your system is to small for full size plants but is great for a starter system (Once your plants get about 10-12 inches tall you should transplant them to something like a 5 gal bucket bubbleponic system.) And 2nd- whats wrong with treating yourself to a big mac or some K>F>C once a week.As to say job well done for a week of eating good. (((( NOTHING)))) don't give up your goals.

  • leaf discoloration is often due to having a nutriend solution that is too strong

  • When the update coming rick ?

  • @ntomaylor hopefully in the next few days

  • Cool, can't wait.

  • if you put the plants that dont need a lot of nutrients at the bottom trough and the ones that need a lot of nutrients at the top, the top plants will get more nutrients and take some out of the water b4 the water hits the bottom plants

  • If you only have the roots watered once a day for 15 min the roots may dry out too much so you should run the water at least three times a day for fifteen min. try it out see if it makes a difference

  • Due an update soon

  • indeed, a project for the xmas break i think.

  • Looks Great Rick!! It is tough this time of year with the light and soil temp. They don;t need much water this time of year. They should start to take off next month as the days get longer as long as the soil temp (or root temp) is warm. It has to do with the brightness of the light but also the light must stay the same amount of time or be getting longer. That is what triggers them to grow. Now it is still getting shorter. At one time in my live I played around with growing. Good Luck!! Duke

  • wow!!! who's a clever boy then!!! i'll have to show this to giles and see what he can build from the odds and ends lying around our garden! we'll keep you posted. lol!!

  • The runner bean growth is amazing! I grew some in soil/compost mix earlier this year and it took many weeks to get to the stage that yours reached.

Energy saver CFL would help the plants in winter. You could power them via wind-turbine, battery bank and an inverter or find 12 volt DC CFL lamps that can run off the batteries direct i.e caravan/campervan suppliers (via normal safety related fuse box etc)

Your project is way ahead of mine. I aiming to run my greenhouse on a VAWT set-up

  • hmmmm :o)

  • I like this idea of hydrophonics. I have never done any work in this area, but because I am into survival and prepardeness I can see how hydrophonics could supply you with fresh produce during the winter time when an outdoor garden is not feasible.

Rick, can you do a video on sprouting seeds as a food source during the winter time.

  • Photobucket : Search : People : 'Tolemans'

There are loads of pictures of my nft progress with monster plants. There is also my hydro drip system I have built for next years season in the greenhouse.

  • But when the rockwool has sprouted well, it will preform as well as pebbles. Just in the beginning stages you can't saturate it. At the end of the day you need a sterlite medium to germinate your seeds in so what are your options? I suggested you don't use the bigger cubs for lettuce and herbs due to the cost of them and they are not necessary. Chillis and tomatoes, I'd use them. Any plant going into an nft system should have a good amount of root showing.

  • nice to see your up dates... like you've said, i think your plants are being lazy to the lack of thriving for the nutrient...like TH3NM3WITHIN1984 is mentioning about the clay pebbles...the oxygen is highter due to the crevace in the pebbles...and the root system needs to breath...and by putting a grill at your end of your drains it will help from falling into the drains...another thing, you're right about your lighting, like i did mentioned before, like the season is cutting the hours of light

  • Rick, I have my seedls of tomatos with about 3 cm and 2 leafs... Can I them in the system?

    Help please

  • Wait for the medium to show lots of root.

  • Hi Rick,

Glad to see you have made some changes for the better. If your not already, I would keep the air pump on permanently to keep your nutrient solution mixed. Another great video by the way, I think you could make them on 'cake decoration' (for example) and I would still be interested. Many people don't know this but roots need air too. Water logging stops this and slows them down. The fact your now letting the rockwool dry out a bit means the roots are searching and also getting air.

  • look into claypebbles less problamatic than the rockwool slabs

  • Very informative

  • Nice rick
