I've looked at nearly all the videos on YouTube about learning ASL and you're by far the best. Great attitude, great personality, and great lessons. Thank you.
Your video helped me a lot!You make it eady for me even though you go a little too fast.I learned how to do all these signs only watching the video once:D

I like the simplicity of it. I work at a grocery store and one of our regulars is deaf. It'd be really nice to be able to do the polite chatter that I use with the others, such as "Hello, how are you (which you covered). Did you find everything alright? Have a great day!"
I have some deaf friends who use signs you use and we communicate very well. ASL is different and has its own personality, but I think you are doing a wonderful job offering these tips/lessons because I am not able afford classes now, My form of singning is TC(Total Communication), Actually it depends on who I am communicating with at the time. So keep up the good work. Oh, by the way how did that person know that a deaf person didnit give you your name sign?
I am trying to learn ASL, and I've been looking on youtube...I was excited to see some basic lessons but as I read through the comments - it seems everyone is saying that all the videos are wrong. Does anyone know a reliable source to learn ASL? or can someone who knows what their doing please post some videos???
@ com4esthesi4 My advice to you is simple. . . but hard. Find some Deaf people and get involved with the Deaf Community in your area. That's how I learned to sign - from Deaf people. They are very sweet and will welcome you into their world. Don't be intimidated but don't be fooled because these videos are NOT how Deaf people sign, Have fun. Keep watching your DVD. You'll figure it out.

BYUFanatic is just an asshole who is angry because he's trying to sell ASL courses on his website, and he doesn't like that people do the same thing for free on youtube. He posts tons of comments hoping to discourage others from making videos and discredit those who have. What a douche.

wow. she is just trying to help beginners learn basic stuff. there is a deaf girl in a class of mine and this video was really helpful in teaching me just the simple things i wanted to learn.
she can't even stop herself from mouthing english as she signs. HELLO HONEY...english and ASL are not the same. what kind of a "teacher" are you? I bet you took ASL 1 in some summer school and think that makes you an expert. wipe that cutesy condescending smile off your face and go teach someone something you are an expert on, like putting on eyeshadow or something.
im alittle confused now. is it ok to spell out my name using the alphebet. like can i sign c and an l and an o and so on? or do i not sign my name at all until i am given one???
@mslovesmile1 The correct thing to do is to spell out your name. If you become a part of the local Deaf community then you will likely receive a name-sign. But for now, simply spelling out your name is fine. *smile*
@Steph1316 There are a number of things wrong with her videos that she has made. I've pointed out some things in previous comments. Don't want to re-type them again. Simply know that she is not a good source for learning ASL or learning about the Deaf culture.
I don't get offended when people from other cultures do things from my culture and botch it a little, like when someone in Japan wears a t-shirt that says a swear word or nonsensical phrase in English. I think it's a little silly maybe, but I don't get upset. But anyway, why are people assuming that she doesn't know people who are in the deaf community? Maybe she has friends or family who are deaf. I see no reason to assume that just because she hears and has a sign name she made it up.
@teebles47 She took a few ASL classes in college. That is the extent of her learning. It's not that she's "botching things a little." I'm an ASL teacher and I see my students botch things all the time. That's normal. What people aren't happy about is that she is passing herself off as an expert on the language and portraying herself as a liaison for the Deaf culture. Both of them are no-no's.
wow guys lets not get hostile i mean shes only sharing what she knows and she does have a video correcting some of her mistakes not everyones perfect those who dont know that much are still learning i give the girl credit because it cant be easy making videos and hoping shes doing it right ... am i right oh and ty byufanatic

@sugarqueen23 A sign name is a sign that represents you and is given to you by other members of the Deaf community. If you do not have a sign name, then simply fingerspell your name using the alphabet.
@DodgeGirlForever1971 I told her that a long time ago. But since she no longer maintains this channel (although she does visit it) she hasn't done anything to fix it. Best thing to do - just stay away from her website.

kristen, i just stumbled upon your videos (greetings 1-4) and wanted to let you know that i really enjoyed your lessons. thank you for sharing--you are a very good teacher.
This is a good video I just made friends with a deaf girl at my school and I know some words but I really want to learn all the signs her name is Bethany and she told me her name in sign :)
@HERMODIZIAC Wow. Incredible rebuttal. I'm in awe of your astounding level of intelligence and your superlative use of the English language to express yourself.
@CassLivingston1 I have a problem with it because it is MY language and MY culture that she is pretending to represent herself as an expert of. She is NOT an expert and by creating these videos, she's causing people like you to make ignorant comments like the one you just made.
@BYUFanatic Then do your own videos if you can do SO MUCH BETTER... go back to YOUR culture and quit critisizing her, I'm sure she's not worried about what you're saying about her. = )
@CassLivingston1 Actually, I HAVE done my own videos here on YouTube. I'm a professional teacher. And, as a teacher, I have every right to give feedback to a former ASL student who is spreading misinformation about what she has supposedly learned. As a member of my culture, I also have every right to protect it against those who create/spread misconceptions about it. I'm definitely not worried about what YOU are saying about me. Just sharing the truth with those interested in learning it.
@CassLivingston1 sure she is. I bet she cares very much what people think. she is so desperate to look important that she made these videos, not realizing that she made herself look like a huge idiot. It is so obvious that she is not qualified to teach ASL, regardless of how she is trying to pass herself off.
Why are you two assuming that she gave the name-sign to herself? She probably knows what you're saying and her name-sign may well have been given to her.

Well kristen, i appreciate your video's and in trying to help the non deaf comunity to learn a little sighn with out going to a class. If i was worried about your name wor who gave it to you or why, ide ask but as far as the comments below... thay can kiss my still hearing ass. If the comments belowe were true and the only deaf people I was ever around were mentaly ill or deficent, my name sighn would be misunderstood or a joke to most. Get a clue... please, oh and great job again kristen.
i have a friend who has deaf family members and she is still teaching me more cuz when i go 2 her house i cant understand wat they are saying cuz idnt know that much!!
@som4esthesi4 The thing is - learning is one thing and teaching is another. If you want to learn, the best way is not from a book or video. The best way to learn any language is to interact with those who use it - take a class where you can ask questions. This is just not going to make it.
@jipp929 I am taking a class where I can ask questions. But it is nice to have a few extra videos to view when you are not in class. My book comes with a helpful DVD, but there is no speaking, and sometimes it can go a little bit to fast, which is hard to understand when there's no one to translate for you.
In the comments below, someone states the following: "I know you asked her, but you do just make up a sign. most people use the 1st letter and then do something with it, but I don't think that is a mandate. My name is eric and I kinda knock on my forehead with an E, it basically says E-man, which is what many people call me anyway. Have fun with it. Now I don't know much sign language, so I hope that isn't already a sign that means, but I don't think so."
If you were in fact a a real teacher of ASL, you would have pointed out this error immediately. Instead, this person is continuing to think that it's okay to create your own sign name.
@MaijaRae, I'm not making any assumptions, instead I am stating my opinion, that if Kristen were an actual ASL teacher, she would have immediately corrected the person below who stated that "you do just make up a sign." I think it's a problem when an ASL student is representing herself as a teacher, yet does not correct very basic misinformation like that.
Kristen - Either you are sleeping in class or your ASL teacher is giving you incorrect information. NO ONE is allowed to give themselves a name-sign. Not even Deaf people give themselves one. Your name-sign is given to you by the members of the Deaf community in which you live and associate with. So, if you're not actively involved with the local Deaf community, you don't get a name-sign. Please, stop making videos and delete the ones you've made. You are giving too much misinformation
@BYUFanatic Yea she has a sign for her name cuz kristen is like wat u are in church so thats where she gets tht sign from n i would no cuz i hav a friend who nos sign language n her parents are deaf
@BYUFanatic - How do you even know if she's a part of a Deaf community. For you to try to put her on blast like that is extremely ignorant and disrespectful.
@Reyasqueroso87 Have you bothered to read the majority of the comments on this video? You'll find that many of us are very disappointed in the misinformation she is spreading. Go read the comments by other viewers, then come back and we'll discuss who is the one being ignorant and disrespectful.
@BYUFanatic I must disagree with you on that one. I have a sign name and I am not a member of any deaf club or community. I wish you would stop being so cruel.
@Li5468 Then that goes to show that you, as a hearing person, have no clue about me and my culture. I speak factually (not making it up) when I state that the cultural norms require that a person (Deaf or hearing) must receive their name-sign from the Deaf community. Feel free to google "Deaf name signs" and you'll see many sources backing up my statement. Cruel? Not hardly. What's cruel is this girl (an ex-ASL student) pretending that she is an expert on my language and my culture.
@Li5468, that doesn't make any sense. Why would you have a name sign if Deaf people in the Deaf community did not give you one? That's the way it goes, so unless you made it up yourself (BIG faux pas), you shouldn't have one. Unless your parent(s) are Deaf? I'm still puzzling it out.
@KiriYukimura I'm assuming that YOU do know her in person? If not, why in the world are you bothering to defend someone who is sharing inaccurate information and creating misconceptions?
@BYUFanatic She NEVER said she gave herself her own name sign. And your not the boss of anything ..... maybe she wanted to give herself one, who says she cant? Whos going to stop her? you? LOL
@jazethie That is incorrect. At 0:58 and 1:40 she makes signs to represent her name. Even if the name-sign was given to her by the Deaf community, you still introduce yourself by spelling your name out first, then giving your name-sign. So obviously she does not know how to introduce herself correctly. In addition, when meeting someone for the first time using an "informal register" and signing (in effect) "Yo! What's up?!" as she did at 1:30 is NOT appropriate. She is giving BAD information.
@jazethie Why don't you ask her yourself? I'm sure it would be highly enlightening for everyone to learn about her involvement in the Deaf community after she finished taking ASL classes. You do realize that she made these videos two years ago? Many Deaf individuals and ASL teachers have complained and she has not responded. It would seem she's moved on. Might be a good idea for everyone else thinking they're learning correct ASL from her to move on too. I wish she would delete these videos.
i am just learning and i think your videos are really helpful compare to others that i have seem you take your time so that we can see what your doing, thank you!
I do not always agree with Banerika 100% but on this I do.
First off you never give yourself a sign name.
Second if you do not associate with the Deaf community it is hard to understand how you even deserve a sign name. Having a sign name indicates a degree of acceptance among Deaf people.
Third there are other rules, which may be regional, about sign names. Once involved in the Deaf community you will learn them.
Uh oh, no, you do not make up your own sign name. Only a Deaf person or an entire Deaf community can give you a sign name. It's really not kosher to make up your own.
I know you asked her, but you do just make up a sign. most people use the 1st letter and then do something with it, but I don't think that is a mandate. My name is eric and I kinda knock on my forehead with an E, it basically says E-man, which is what many people call me anyway. Have fun with it.
Now I don't know much sign language, so I hope that isn't already a sign that means, but I don't think so.
haha... a tap on the forehead with one's fist means "dumb" and it's really dumb that you think you can give yourself a sign name. Deaf culture stipulates only Deaf can give you a sign name so get out there and socialize.
Almost everyone who signs on these videos seems to think they need to have their nose in the camera. Hopefully she will re-do her Videos to show a proper signing space. I don't think sign language is supposed to be centered in front of the face. This may be a moot point, as it's been three months since her last video.
Hi! I think what you are doing is great! I got what you were saying/signing, but as you teach could you remember to lower the camera to show all of your "signing space" (I won't be ablet to get more of your "advanced" stuff otherwise.) THANKS AGAIN! (and neato shirt, btw) :)

@jipp929 You have to learn how to walk before you can run. She is teaching the basics.
som4esthesi4 1 year ago
@som4esthesi4 The thing is - learning is one thing and teaching is another. If you want to learn, the best way is not from a book or video. The best way to learn any language is to interact with those who use it - take a class where you can ask questions. This is just not going to make it.
jipp929 1 year ago
@jipp929 I am taking a class where I can ask questions. But it is nice to have a few extra videos to view when you are not in class. My book comes with a helpful DVD, but there is no speaking, and sometimes it can go a little bit to fast, which is hard to understand when there's no one to translate for you.
som4esthesi4 11 months ago
In the comments below, someone states the following: "I know you asked her, but you do just make up a sign. most people use the 1st letter and then do something with it, but I don't think that is a mandate. My name is eric and I kinda knock on my forehead with an E, it basically says E-man, which is what many people call me anyway. Have fun with it. Now I don't know much sign language, so I hope that isn't already a sign that means, but I don't think so."
Banerika 1 year ago 3
If you were in fact a a real teacher of ASL, you would have pointed out this error immediately. Instead, this person is continuing to think that it's okay to create your own sign name.
Banerika 1 year ago 4
@Banerika She never said she gave herself a sign name. Maybe she practices in a deaf community. Don't make assumptions, and quit being rude, please.
MaijaRae 1 year ago
@MaijaRae, I'm not making any assumptions, instead I am stating my opinion, that if Kristen were an actual ASL teacher, she would have immediately corrected the person below who stated that "you do just make up a sign." I think it's a problem when an ASL student is representing herself as a teacher, yet does not correct very basic misinformation like that.

@Banerika Thats exactly what I thought. So I started to look up Sign names for my name. I felt like a total idiot afterwords.

@BYUFanatic - How do you even know if she's a part of a Deaf community. For you to try to put her on blast like that is extremely ignorant and disrespectful.
Reyasqueroso87 1 year ago
@Reyasqueroso87 Have you bothered to read the majority of the comments on this video? You'll find that many of us are very disappointed in the misinformation she is spreading. Go read the comments by other viewers, then come back and we'll discuss who is the one being ignorant and disrespectful.

@BYUFanatic I must disagree with you on that one. I have a sign name and I am not a member of any deaf club or community. I wish you would stop being so cruel.
Li5468 1 year ago
@Li5468 Then that goes to show that you, as a hearing person, have no clue about me and my culture. I speak factually (not making it up) when I state that the cultural norms require that a person (Deaf or hearing) must receive their name-sign from the Deaf community. Feel free to google "Deaf name signs" and you'll see many sources backing up my statement. Cruel? Not hardly. What's cruel is this girl (an ex-ASL student) pretending that she is an expert on my language and my culture.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago 2
@Li5468, that doesn't make any sense. Why would you have a name sign if Deaf people in the Deaf community did not give you one? That's the way it goes, so unless you made it up yourself (BIG faux pas), you shouldn't have one. Unless your parent(s) are Deaf? I'm still puzzling it out.
Banerika 1 year ago
@BYUFanatic How do you know she wasn't given one? Do you happen to know her in person?
KiriYukimura 1 year ago
@KiriYukimura I'm assuming that YOU do know her in person? If not, why in the world are you bothering to defend someone who is sharing inaccurate information and creating misconceptions?
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
@BYUFanatic She NEVER said she gave herself her own name sign. And your not the boss of anything ..... maybe she wanted to give herself one, who says she cant? Whos going to stop her? you? LOL

jazethie 7 months ago
@jazethie That is incorrect. At 0:58 and 1:40 she makes signs to represent her name. Even if the name-sign was given to her by the Deaf community, you still introduce yourself by spelling your name out first, then giving your name-sign. So obviously she does not know how to introduce herself correctly. In addition, when meeting someone for the first time using an "informal register" and signing (in effect) "Yo! What's up?!" as she did at 1:30 is NOT appropriate. She is giving BAD information.
BYUFanatic 7 months ago
@BYUFanatic how do u know that a person from the deaf community didn't name her? u have no clue if she's around deaf people a lot or not.
jazethie 7 months ago
@jazethie Why don't you ask her yourself? I'm sure it would be highly enlightening for everyone to learn about her involvement in the Deaf community after she finished taking ASL classes. You do realize that she made these videos two years ago? Many Deaf individuals and ASL teachers have complained and she has not responded. It would seem she's moved on. Might be a good idea for everyone else thinking they're learning correct ASL from her to move on too. I wish she would delete these videos.

I watch her do a video, if she was reading from the phone book or simply counting numbers.
Someone put her on TV is some capacity. She would pull in viewers.

PathOfTheHappySpirit 2 years ago 4
Uh oh, no, you do not make up your own sign name. Only a Deaf person or an entire Deaf community can give you a sign name. It's really not kosher to make up your own.
Banerika 2 years ago 3
You are an awesome teacher! BTW, you have a sign for your name...can I create my own sign for my name or how does that work?

haha... a tap on the forehead with one's fist means "dumb" and it's really dumb that you think you can give yourself a sign name.

Ashleynut900 2 years ago
Some adaptation of sign to cine may be happening. Now we have VP, and a variant of signing space may develop for cameras.

Hi! I think what you are doing is great! I got what you were saying/signing, but as you teach could you remember to lower the camera to show all of your "signing space" (I won't be ablet to get more of your "advanced" stuff otherwise.) THANKS AGAIN! (and neato shirt, btw) :)
