The interesting thing about Snape is that, Snape's physical appearance was based off of one of her teachers when she was young. Search for "John Nettleship. Though, Rowling claimed that this character in the story wasn't based on her real life. Rowling was glad that John Nettleship had read her book before he died.
@reyes0987 I just realized your profile pic is Selena Gomez. I've never heard her music before, but I used to watch her show Wizards Of Waverly Place, a couple years ago. It was funny as hell.
@REIREI29 uhm... this is a j.k rowling interview. take your selena stuff somewhere else. don't get me wrong i'm one of the BIGGEST selenatrors but not on a jk rowling interview thanks
@clary4jace Um.....I'm not a Selena Gomez fan at ALL. I was simply commenting on my friends profile pic, and how I saw Selena's show a couple years ago.......Selenatrors? Is that what her fans are called?
@PineappleNicole Snape WAS misunderstand. By the characters, and the Harry Potter fans. I think everyone had the idea in their head that Snape was always a bully. A negative, hateful asshole, and that Sirius Black and James Potter were kind, sweet people. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that learning that Black and Potter were bullies made one disgusted with them. To learn that Snape had been nice surprised us all, and showed that we never knew his character.
@REIREI29 There were parts of Snape that definitely were misunderstood, but not all of him. He did have some good in him, but only just. And he definitely was a negative hateful asshole. And James and Sirius did have some cocky years, but only just. OVERALL, James and Sirius were heroes who fought for the light, and Snape was OVERALL an asshole and a bully.
@PineappleNicole We all have our opinions, buddy. I, as well as tons of HP fans all across the world, see Snape as a hero. Just as some see him as nothing more than a bully. I still think that had Black and Potter treated him differently, he wouldn't have fallen in with the Death Eaters. Like I said, I got the impression he did it to prove he wasn't weak like Black and Potter thought he was.
@REIREI29 Well, I don't see Snape as nothing more than a bully, I definitely think he was very brave and all that to be working for Dumbledore right under Voldemort's non existent nose, and I think that he was in the end a good guy, but I believe the difference is (and correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think that that entirely makes up for all the other terrible things that he did, and you believe that it does.
@PineappleNicole Ah, but what terrible things did Snape do, exactly? Other than breifly join the Death Eaters, call Lily a Mudblood, and be mean to his students?
James and Sirius did worse, in a way. When Snape, as a teen, was minding his own business, reading a book, Potter raised him into the air, and pulled down his pants, infront of other students. Called him names, treated him without an ounce of kindness, save for saving him from Lupin when Lupin became a Werewolf.
@REIREI29 Dude, he didn't "briefly" join the death eaters. He dedicated a HUGE portion of his life toward the dark arts. Don't forget that he was the one that told Voldemort that he had to kill Harry. Granted he didn't know WHO the prediction was directed towards, he still knowingly told Voldemort that he had to kill someone in order to prevail. He only stopped working for Voldemort when he killed his true love. If he didn't kill her, Snape would still to this day be working for Voldemort.
Like I said before, I think Snape was just desperate to prove that he was powerful. Working with someone as powerful as Lord Moldy Butt probably made him feel superior to all Wizards and Witches.
@REIREI29 And you have to remember that Snape would do similar things to Potter too. It wasn't just Potter being mean, it was a back and forth thing between the two of them. And Potter saving Snape from Lupin is definitely a good thing haha.
And Snape wasn't just a little mean to his students, he publicly ridiculed them and made their lives as miserable as he could. Just as he and Potter did to each other when they were going to Hogwarts.
@PineappleNicole Snape wasn't a bully as a child. And Albus pretty much raised Harry to die. Yes, he knew Harry was a Horcrux. But, the way he went about everything was just wrong. Snape may have been a bully, but, he never raised a child to be killed. When he found out that's what Dumbledore expected from Harry, you could clearly hear his disgust, shock, and see it on his face. Albus brother Aberforth even knew Albus was an asshole.
@REIREI29 It is of course really sad that Harry had to die (kinda...), but like it said in the books, Dumbledore was only thinking of the greater good. He absolutely HATED the thought of Harry dying, but it was absolutely the only way to kill Voldemort and save countless other lives. Snape AND Harry both understood that. Aberforth just didn't. Of course thinking for the greater good can lead to terrible things, but sometimes in war you have to. Even Snape and Harry realized that was the only way
@PineappleNicole Ok, you got me there. Harry, being the a Horcrux, did have to die. And yes, Harry realized that, which is why he named his youngest son after Dumbledore. BUT, Harry also thought Snape was a hero, and a brave man as well. Hence his son's name Albus Severus.
I don't think Snape was intended to be a hero.He was mean to Harry and the other students. But when see or read Snape's Memories, you find out he's a different guy. That's why I'm not sure if I should like Snape.I thought he was a real jerk when he insulted Harry and CO. and killed Dumbledore, but I like him alot because he was always trying to protect Harry. He was just a mistreated and beaten kid that loved a woman who hated him and died before he barely knew her.
@McInsane1000 Exactly. You gotta wonder, if he hadn't been treated the way he was as a student at Hogwarts, and if Lily hadn't choosen his bullies to marry, and have the other be the godfather of her child, and gotten murdered, would he have turned out the way he had as an adult. I often find myself wondering if he would hav ebee a kind, fun person...We shall never know.....
I wholeheartedly agree with everything J.K Rowling said and see it as silly how Snape is being regarded as a freakin' saint now just because of his love for Lily that made him switch sides and strive to protect Harry. But yes, I admire his bravery and for that I don't hate him anymore. But I don't like him either because he still was a cruel, cold, and sarcastic person. He did bully all of the students except the Slytherins, especially the "arrogant, rule- breaking Harry. He should've been nicer
We all knew Harry and his friends were hero's, and would win in the end. But, no one saw it coming that Snape had been a sweet kid ridiculed every day. Just as no one saw it coming that Neville would turn out to be such an awesomely brave badass.
But he loooved Lily, so he must of loved Harry, being the son of his love.
Come on, anyone who loves someone THAT MUCH is totally a hero. He is the deffiantion of a Hero, someone who does something simply because that person loved with all there heart.
I've done a lot of charactor analyizing and all I can see is a very deeply hurt person who persevered through everything because he LOVED someone who didn't love him back. JK just outright says he's a jerk. IT CONFUSING >.<
Snape hated Harry, he only protected him because of his integrity to Lily and Dumbledore. He is not necessarily a nice person in any way, it was just his love, his one light in the world being destroyed, that led him to change sides.
I like her and her viewpoint. xP ;P <3 However, I do see him as having changed slightly from his past Death Eater days-- he became a wiser person, if no less petty. It seems interesting how the book twists around the concept of the ability to love as being a saving trait for goodness--so yes, he was a petty, cruel, unkind man--but he was a good man. If he had never loved Lily, he would definitely have never aided Harry. But...he did love Lily, and that makes all the difference to his soul.
omg he was a hero he would because he killed dumbledore for harry and yea snape loved lily but I think he has grown to love harry I think snape should have been with lily. snape is awesome!!
@callofdutygamer20111 Snape never loved Harry. Even in the end. His last line "look at me" is just so he can see Lily's eyes. It was ALL for Lily. Snape is not a good guy.
He was just a little shaken by all that was happening and being ill treated apparently by his father and classmates at hogwarts..He's just lost his way and got too deep into things... and if he wasn't in the vow for Draco, he might have helped harry when he was able to slip away to do some good... He was somewhat of a hero but not so prominent.. He attempted to save harry at the first movie and that was easy to see,,, but he had to start spying and that was when he wasn't seen as a hero anymore
Snape was very brave and respected man but his choices led him to the bad side.He may have had to face difficult situations in his life, but the choices that he made were his own.He was not a hero because he never managed to overcome his bitterness. He didn't fight for the greater good.He never cared for Harry. He fought only for his own atonement. He was a tragic character.I feel sorry for him and nothing else.
He didn't die for Harry potter's sake... He died for Lilly's sake, he died for Lilly's son and there is a huge difference. Do I think he was a villan? Not really. Am I thankful for everything he did for Harry? Certainly, but in Snape's eyes it wasn't about saving an innoccent life or wanting good to triumph over evil. He did it for his own reasons.
He never saw Harry as Harry. He saw Harry as James, with or without Lily's eyes. He never cared for Harry whatsoever, it was all for Lily. Snape is a very complex character, and I think among the best. Do not sugarcoat him though, bad thing to do. Embrace his flaws, that's what makes him Snape. And to create such a flawed, yet controversial character needs quite a mind, so I think we'll have to hand over the credit to Jo Rowling. She made a character to hate, yet love. Fangirls bother me, ugh.
He was a hero, but I'm glad she doesn't sugar coat him like too many fangirls did. He didn't do it for Harry's sake, he did it for Lily's. Was he very brave? Oh yes. But he was also selfish, bitter, and a bully, only truly working for his own cause. But that's what made him a remarkable character is the fact that he had flaws. But he was in no way a saint either. That's why he's such a controversial and interesting character. He had a bad past, he was treated badly, and this is how it came down.
Sorry Mrs.Rowling, but for me and a lot another ppl Severios Snape was a truly hero!!! he risked his life everyday to protect Harry Potter, he die for Harry Potter sake!!!
No matter how bad Sevy may be on the outside, he's still a truly kindred and loving soul on the inside...he loved Lily with all his heart. I don't think that what JK Rowling says here is fair. He is a hero no matter what. I see him as the bravest, and best character in the entire series, and actually in the entire universe of books and movies as well. I will agree though, that he wouldn't have given a rats ass about harry if he hadn't loved Lily. He is still cruel in that sense...
I think that Snape would have still tried to protect Harry.
If he hadn't been mocked as a child, he probably would have grown up to be a really nice man, and kind to all his students. And if he had grown up to be nice, he certainly would have tried to protect Harry, as well as all the students of Hogwarts.
Snape is a hero, harry told his son albus severus potter in the end. he's totally misunderstood. he became deatheater because he's obsessed in dark arts and at the same time he also want to impress lily but lily didn't want that. he became D.E bcoz of obsession and love. but he choose love instead, he protect lily, not just lily but her family as well. he put himself in death. yes he only wants to be loved but he's misunderstood. he cared and protect harry like his own son!
Really, Rowling? Snape wasn't a hero? Of COURSE he was. He was only hateful because the woman he loved choose the man who humiliated him on a regular basis, had a son by this bully, named the bully's best friend as the childs godfather, then gets killed by Voldemort.
Snape was hateful because everytime he looked at Harry, he wasn't just reminded of Lily and James, but was also reminded that Harry could have been HIS, had Lily loved him. Snape was hateful because he had no loved one of his own.
Snape would have continued to be a deatheater if Voldemort never killed Lily. But because of his loss, Snape changed in such a way that he actually grew to like Harry. He became more loving and passionate, slightly. Yes he was still still spiteful and a bully, but he also learned to love/show compassion. Snape grew to care for his colleagues+students. Just look at Snape's reaction before McGonagall duels him. He is shocked. Shocked she would attack him. He cared for people thanks to Dumbledore.
@SirAvalord, he certainly was in a shock about McGonagall's attack. It looked like he felt unable to attack her and just ran away. And what about the professor killed by Voldemort. She says: "Severus, please, we're friends". He felt sorry about her but couldn't do anything. Just look.
@WildKitten46 Exactly. Wtching Snape's expression throughout the last two movies showed that he didn't want to fight. That he was most likely tired of it all.
@SirAvalord I think Snape only became a Deatheater because he probably felt important. He felt powerful, to know that he would be in alliance with such a powerful wizard, howver evil. I think Snape wanted to feel superior to James Potter and Sirius Black. If it weren't for them, and other students mocking Severus, he probably would have never become a Deatheater in the first place. And even when he was a Deatheater, was he truly a bad guy?
@NimrodOnElmStreet How the hell is Harry arrogant, ungrateful, and whiny? And how is Snape just SPITEFUL? He was an incredible bully, he'd make his own students feel terrible about themselves, how is that being a good person? Harry was kind and willing to sacrifice himself for the ones he loved, while Snape regularly insulted Neville while favoring his racist students (MALFOY). I could give you so many examples that prove Snape's cruelness.
@ABCDE29860 Thank you! Somebody doesn't sugar-coat Snape. I like the character, but I find it annoying how many girls think he's a loving and sweet soul, whereas Harry is just supposedly bitter and angry. It makes my blood boil.
@plaidcarogemm Exactly! I like him too, but yes, fangirls drive me insane. Especially the ones who have only seen the movies, because they really tone down his more nasty side in the movies. When I read the books I'm sometimes appalled by the comments he makes towards his own students, no one likes to acknowledge that he’s a hypocrite. He was bullied growing up, and that’s undeniably awful, but he does the exact same thing to many of his students.
@ABCDE29860 Yes, I'm glad you understand. That is true. Sometimes his comments were funny, others were downright cruel and rude. But he was definitely symbolic in the end that love can redeem the worst of people.
@NimrodOnElmStreet That is just sugar-coating Snape. Harry wasn't "arrogant, ungrateful, and whiny". There are so many teens like him in the world. He was a hero and he worked at it. He did what he did for the greater good and his friends. Snape did what he did for Lily and Lily only. Harry isn't ungrateful, that's just you being angry at him for no particular reason. He was whiny in one book because practically everyone in the world was going against him. He was grateful for almost everything.
For once, J.K. Rowling is WRONG! He's definetly a hero and he was DEFINETLY not a selfish man. He gave up his life to protect Lily's son. Come on! And she's saying he wouldn't've cared about Harry if it wasn't for lily? nah, I don't think so
@SnarrySiremus101 Whatever Ms. rowling says goes. She's the author after all. I guess snape is a kind of anti-hero. He never meant to be a hero but in the end he was.
I agree with Jo completely. I respect Snape to all extents, as he was extremely important and brave which cannot be denied, but I don't believe he was a hero. He protected Harry for Lily, not for the greater good of things. He only cared for one person and didn't seem to mind if anything happened to anyone else. It was more of an obsession than true love, in my opinion.
@ObliviousToBeautiful : I agree. I truly only cared for Snape because of Alans portryal, and the directors certainly took his character and ran with it..I never touched the books until after watching the Half Blood Prince..then..i couldn't hate Snape enough! He is every bit as detestable as J.K. says he is. He wasn't a hero..IT was self interest only.
I think that most of the time, Severus'es irritation and dislike of Harry is actually founded. There are times that, if you look at it from Snapes' persepective, Harry seems sometimes impertinant. For instance, crashing the car into the whomping willow and the occlumency lessons. Other times, however, when he seems snide and spiteful without reason. He is extremely complex, scarred, and has different motives. But still, when he died, I cried for the longest time. Severus is an amazing character!
What Snape went through was carzy. How many of us would get through a day with no one to share our fears with and with people hating us. Thank goodness he had Dumbledore and then Dumbledore asks him to kill him? I mean how awful for Snape!
Saying that Severus wouldn't have protected Harry is rubbish. I know that JK wrote the character but she must have been having an off day when this was filmed. Severus would have protected Harry just as he did the other students, think of what he did over the years; Protected the stone, Searched for Sirius Black, Gave Umbitch fake veritisium, In HBP he lead the deatheaters away before they could harm students and finally in DH he protected all of the students as much as he possibily could.
@ElphabaLivesForever she know what she said, and i think that severus wouldn't portect harry, really,it's just for lily, and i think only that is a beautiful think cause his love was pure,i think the books and films are a little bit deffrents from each other, and i thnk jk rowling is the person who decide who's the hero or whos not the hero, she own the books , is her series, and you could not say that she was a day off or a day on,lol, sorry but i don't hate him his good, and i love this character.
@xmileycyrusfanx100 I am not denying that JK can't say who is a hero and who is not a hero, what I am saying is that she should decide which it is. In other interviews she has stated that yes he is a hero, a flawed hero, but a hero none the less. JK cannot say that Severus is not a hero, he was the bravest man Harry ever knew, he names his son after him, surly that alone marks him as a hero, otherwise it makes no sense, Harry honoured those who were brave, couragous and heroic.
@ElphabaLivesForever i wanna know where is this interviews, and she can say he's not a hero, she's just say it now in 0:06,and i know that he's the bravest man harry ever know, because he saved him secretly, because dumbldore said so,and jk rowling just said he's brave but not a hero,it's make sense because he was just like she said in 0:09 that he's still that spyfull, mean person,he was before and harry named he's son , to honnor a person loved his mother to death and decide to help him secretly .
JK needs to keep a track of what she is saying, this is LIES! Previously she said; "A very flawed hero. An anti-hero, perhaps. He is not a particularly likeable man in many ways. He remains rather cruel, a bully, riddled with bitterness and insecurity — and yet he loved, and showed loyalty to that love and, ultimately, laid down his life because of it. That's pretty heroic"
And this is what I believe, yes he is flawed, yes he is not a nice person, but it is still a hero and he always will be.
@TressaSilk that's not a exuse make him do something like that , harry's life was misarable , but he didn's treated many so cruel , like you said , because i think the only hero is harry , ron and hermione , they lived the real misarable life , tryig to kill voldemort .
i agree with krowling , he's brave but not a hero . the true heros , is harry , ron , hermione , fred , sirius , lupin , dumbldore , luna , veville , lily , even james , they died heros they didn't betrayed the order of pheonix . accept what she said , because she write the books and she know the characters .
At the MTV Movie Awards 2011Eclipse won EVERYTHING.Besides why wasn't Rupert in a carhegory? He was PERFECTION in the movie.I am not saying that Eclipse doesn't deserve it but Harry Potter has been teaching us so many things through the years and we want to show them that. Potterheads PLEASE vote everyday for Harry Potter on every cathegory at the TCA and next year vote for it at every cathegory at the MTV MA. COPYANDPASTE this at EVRY HP VID, give thumbs up, LETS GIVE THEM THE BEST GOODBYE EVA!
Snape was and it is hero of whole Harry Potter serier.. He didn't want show that until last book. Snape care about harry whole his life.. about Lily's eyes but hated him beacause Harry was lke James.. the looked too much same. if Harry would looked like complite Lily and male verson that would diffrent.. ? If you think so, comment to me
@GetlemanNightmare I have to disagree. Snape cared nothing about Harry himself. In the book it even says that he wouldv'e let James and Harry die if he could've just saved Lily. So it was, like Rowling said, his love for her that made him save Harry and not because he actually cared about him himself.
@GetlemanNightmare the real one who carred about harry,is his mother, dumbldore, ron and hermione, ginny ,and his friends, all what snape did was for his love, lily, accept that just for her . and i don't think his the hero of all the hp series their is alot died for their loved ones, james and lily, fred, remus, dobby, sirius, dumbldore, not only snape his notthe only character.i don't hate him but i agree with writer of the books, because she know her character, and she decide who's the hero and who's not .
So if you care for the child of the woman you loved, is that not love? To say he would never have cared for Harry had he not been Lily's is wholly beside the point. He was Lily's and Snape protected him. Given Snape's history (in the books) I would think ending his life so bravely, doing something good would be heroic considering his upbringing. So is that not a hero? I don't know. I think Rickman took the character away from JK a bit and led him somewhere more tender than JK intended. Go Alan
It was def his love for Lily that saved him and that it should be revealed through Harry (the boy he may never have directly cared loved - only as the child of his beloved) is really fine storytelling JK is brilliant It's very heavy stuff and there were times in the movies where Snape did show pride in Harry like when he used the right cure for Ron when he was poisoned so JK saying he wouldn't have cared for him had he not been Lily's doesn't fully answer the question - because Harry was Lily's
Part 2 It's hard to explain but Snape's feelings were more honest than Dumbledore's. My other thought is that by getting Alan Rickman to play Snape he was going to come off as more sympathetic, complex and more of a beloved character than perhaps J.K. foresaw. We certainly don't only see Snape as Brave, we see him as epic, heroic, beloved and for many he is the defining character of the whole series. Yet he is a bully and he is cruel so how does Rickman pull that off? It's a wonder to behold
I love Snape but I really agree with her assessment. He was mean and a bully and nowhere in the movie did you hear him say he cared about Harry. I actually never got the impression he did care in a direct way. When asked if he now cares about the boy he casts the Lily Petronus. It's Lily he cares for... but of course JK saying had he not been Lily's son, Snape wouldn't have cared at all puts him nowhere below Dumbledore who used Harry very badly in a strategic, offensive way *continued*
@GrissomLovesSara i agree with you , so mutch , finally somebody really agree with jk rowling , we don't hate snape but he wasn't hero , he was brave and that is good two , but he wasn't hero .
@xmileycyrusfanx100 I never said he wasn't a hero. I think he's the biggest hero in the story aside from Harry. The only part I wonder about is how much he cared for harry directly but as Elphabalivesforever says 'he protected the other kids, he would have protected Harry' I think it's hard to know how much he loved Harry or let himself even accept that he loved Harry but he certainly wouldn't have just stood aside and let him die. I still think Rickman put his own flavor on it
@GrissomLovesSara ok, let's not tell lies, harrry look like james, severus hate james, that's why he hate harry,he won't portect him,and ofcourse as a teacher,he will portect the classe as every teacher would do,and this is normally , because dumbldore tell him to do it,cause dumblrdore portect harry two with severus, and i think for me dumbldore and harry is the real heroes, also hermione and ron,i don't hate snape but i agree with jk rowling , it's her books and she deside everything she wants .
@xmileycyrusfanx100 Dumbledore is no more a hero than Snape. At least Snape wasn't plotting Harry's death for years. Dumbledore sacrificied alot for power, including his sister. That's not a hero. So if you're tallying it all up then Snape has good and bad and so does Dumbledore. Lots of bad in Dumbledore. Lots of putting the overall picture above individual people in the war
@GrissomLovesSara ok , maybey dumbldore wasn't perfect , and i know snape two , not because dumldore sucrficed for power that's mean he's not a hero , power is a way that's help alot to be a hero , and if dumbldore wasn't a hero so why he sucrficed for draco malfoy leaving snape killing him , and why he tryed to portect harry when sirius was after him , come on , oh stop it , dumbldore is a hero , read the books , and read what dumbldore have done for harry , and the other students then talk .
@xmileycyrusfanx100 What I'm saying is Dumbledore and Snape are both heroes equally if they are at all. Dumbledore is not a better person than Snape. I think they are both part good and bad. JK was brilliant in this aspect of her writing because what is worse; Snape doing bad things to strangers when he was a Death Eater or Dumbledore plotting for Harry (his friend and almost his son) to die? It makes you think. I love Dumbledore AND I love Snape - neither one is better or more of a hero.
@TXIIILightAgent1994 I extremely disagree with you on the third point. We do not know Harry's father. We don't. All we know about him AND Lily is from other people opinions and a handful of memories. James was a little jerk in school, but how could someone who died for his wife and child be a complete douche? He loved Lily just like Severus did. And if Lily was as great of a woman as everyone said she was, then she would not have fell in love with a Douche after hating him for years.
@TXIIILightAgent1994 I don't think Dumbledore just used Harry to fight Dumbledore. That may have been his original intention, but you can't deny that he grew to love Harry. Dumbledore was not always the marvelous person we believed him to be up until the last book (especially in his youth) but I don't think its fair to just run your back on him because of what we learn in the last book. Harry went through that struggle of understanding and accpeted Dumbledore in the end. I do as well.
@REIREI29 I'll agree with everything except #5. Snape wasn't a sweet, kind person. Despite the fact that he loved Lily, what other warm hearted characteristics does he have? He was mean to everyone who wasn't a Slytherin and held grudges against anyone who got the DADA post over him (granted Quirrell had Voldemort on the back of his head, Lockhart was an idiot, Snape already hated Lupin, and Umbridge was a nasty woman).
@mindlessman2009 Well, I got the impression that he woulda been sweet if it weren't for Lily choosing his enemy over him, and then dying. Though, that last part couldn't be helped. He also, according to Dumbledore, risked his life everyday to keep Harry and his friends safe. And...Dammit, he was sexy. Lmmfao.
And you're absolutely right about your DATDAT analysis. Lol.
And dude, he wasn't powerful enough....He got killed by a ring. A RING!!! Harry, a child, destroyed the Horcrux that was Voldemorts diary. A child who hadn't even come into his powers yet. And here was dumbledore, and ADULT, a powerful wizard, couldn't even destroy a ring without being slowly killed, Horcrux though it was.
@REIREI29 Power and greed block your natural abilities to detect any flaws when you crave selfish possessions..(cursed ring) which in turn killed dumbledore.
@REIREI29 There wasn't a curse on the Diary, though. The ring killed Dumbledore because of a curse on it, not because it was a horcrux. It would have killed Harry too if he had touched it. Likewise, I'm sure Dumbledore wouldn't have a problem destroying the diary.
@PineappleNicole I wasn't aware that there was a curse on the Horcrux ring. It didn't say so in the movie. The book, perhaps? I haven't read it in awhile.
@REIREI29 NOOOOO! Read the books!!!!!! They are so much better! The movies are amazing and stuff, but you really get SO MUCH more information from the books!
@PineappleNicole Sadly, I don't own all the books. Just the first, second, and fourth. Trust me, I will find and buy them, Lol. And I do agree with you that the books are better than the movies. Much more happens in the books.
@Tool78Maynard Dumbledore didn't crave power. His downfall was that he wanted to see his dead sister so badly that he touched the ring before checking to see if there were any curses on it. It was not motivated by power in any sense. He even kept the elder wand because he was one of the only ones who WOULDN'T abuse it's power.
@PineappleNicole Dumbledores brother Abiforth or whatever his name is..said it the last movie that Him and dumbledore werent on speaking terms due to dumbledores "crave or obsession for power" or did I not hear that properly?
@Tool78Maynard Well, It's not a good idea to base your character analysis off of the movies, because they are not always true to the books. However, when Dumbledore was young and in love with Grindelwald, it would appear that he was power hungry to Aberforth, because he was so submissive to Grindelwald's power-hungry will. He was actually just blinded by love, although it is completely understandable how Aberforth would misinterpret that. His downfall was DEFINITELY not being power-hungry.
@PineappleNicole Well you really seem like you are intelligent with this story so I will switch my mindset to be open minded and to take your thoughts into consideration. Unfortunately, I dont have the patience to sit down for a couple weeks and read all the books. Too much going on in life to obtain that knowledge. Thanks for your thoughts :)
shut up rowling, snape was the real hero!

The interesting thing about Snape is that, Snape's physical appearance was based off of one of her teachers when she was young. Search for "John Nettleship. Though, Rowling claimed that this character in the story wasn't based on her real life. Rowling was glad that John Nettleship had read her book before he died.

@PineappleNicole Shush up, you. Lmao.
Great fuckin' movies,huh, my friend?
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 Yes, I love them XD
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Snape WAS misunderstand. By the characters, and the Harry Potter fans. I think everyone had the idea in their head that Snape was always a bully. A negative, hateful asshole, and that Sirius Black and James Potter were kind, sweet people. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that learning that Black and Potter were bullies made one disgusted with them. To learn that Snape had been nice surprised us all, and showed that we never knew his character.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 There were parts of Snape that definitely were misunderstood, but not all of him. He did have some good in him, but only just. And he definitely was a negative hateful asshole. And James and Sirius did have some cocky years, but only just. OVERALL, James and Sirius were heroes who fought for the light, and Snape was OVERALL an asshole and a bully.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole We all have our opinions, buddy. I, as well as tons of HP fans all across the world, see Snape as a hero. Just as some see him as nothing more than a bully. I still think that had Black and Potter treated him differently, he wouldn't have fallen in with the Death Eaters. Like I said, I got the impression he did it to prove he wasn't weak like Black and Potter thought he was.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 Well, I don't see Snape as nothing more than a bully, I definitely think he was very brave and all that to be working for Dumbledore right under Voldemort's non existent nose, and I think that he was in the end a good guy, but I believe the difference is (and correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think that that entirely makes up for all the other terrible things that he did, and you believe that it does.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Ah, but what terrible things did Snape do, exactly? Other than breifly join the Death Eaters, call Lily a Mudblood, and be mean to his students?
James and Sirius did worse, in a way. When Snape, as a teen, was minding his own business, reading a book, Potter raised him into the air, and pulled down his pants, infront of other students. Called him names, treated him without an ounce of kindness, save for saving him from Lupin when Lupin became a Werewolf.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 Dude, he didn't "briefly" join the death eaters. He dedicated a HUGE portion of his life toward the dark arts. Don't forget that he was the one that told Voldemort that he had to kill Harry. Granted he didn't know WHO the prediction was directed towards, he still knowingly told Voldemort that he had to kill someone in order to prevail. He only stopped working for Voldemort when he killed his true love. If he didn't kill her, Snape would still to this day be working for Voldemort.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Damn damn damn. STOP BEING RIGHT!!! Lol.
Like I said before, I think Snape was just desperate to prove that he was powerful. Working with someone as powerful as Lord Moldy Butt probably made him feel superior to all Wizards and Witches.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 And you have to remember that Snape would do similar things to Potter too. It wasn't just Potter being mean, it was a back and forth thing between the two of them. And Potter saving Snape from Lupin is definitely a good thing haha.
And Snape wasn't just a little mean to his students, he publicly ridiculed them and made their lives as miserable as he could. Just as he and Potter did to each other when they were going to Hogwarts.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Well, didn't james mock him first? Damn, I gotta find those books.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 That particular time yes, but there were countless other times where Snape would start the bullying.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Damn you, Snape, for stooping to the bullying level. Lol.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Snape wasn't a bully as a child. And Albus pretty much raised Harry to die. Yes, he knew Harry was a Horcrux. But, the way he went about everything was just wrong. Snape may have been a bully, but, he never raised a child to be killed. When he found out that's what Dumbledore expected from Harry, you could clearly hear his disgust, shock, and see it on his face. Albus brother Aberforth even knew Albus was an asshole.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 It is of course really sad that Harry had to die (kinda...), but like it said in the books, Dumbledore was only thinking of the greater good. He absolutely HATED the thought of Harry dying, but it was absolutely the only way to kill Voldemort and save countless other lives. Snape AND Harry both understood that. Aberforth just didn't. Of course thinking for the greater good can lead to terrible things, but sometimes in war you have to. Even Snape and Harry realized that was the only way
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Ok, you got me there. Harry, being the a Horcrux, did have to die. And yes, Harry realized that, which is why he named his youngest son after Dumbledore. BUT, Harry also thought Snape was a hero, and a brave man as well. Hence his son's name Albus Severus.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 Ya, Harry thought that, but J.K. doesn't and neither do I lol

McInsane1000 2 months ago

LadyMurderMaid 2 months ago

I like her and her viewpoint. xP ;P <3 However, I do see him as having changed slightly from his past Death Eater days-- he became a wiser person, if no less petty. It seems interesting how the book twists around the concept of the ability to love as being a saving trait for goodness--so yes, he was a petty, cruel, unkind man--but he was a good man. If he had never loved Lily, he would definitely have never aided Harry. But...he did love Lily, and that makes all the difference to his soul.

Makkaru111 3 months ago
Snape was very brave and respected man but his choices led him to the bad side.He may have had to face difficult situations in his life, but the choices that he made were his own.He was not a hero because he never managed to overcome his bitterness. He didn't fight for the greater good.He never cared for Harry. He fought only for his own atonement. He was a tragic character.I feel sorry for him and nothing else.

I don't think that Snape was a hero. He did all these things for Lily, not for Harry. Yes, he was a brave man, of course. But not a hero.
vikamiley1 3 months ago
He didn't die for Harry potter's sake... He died for Lilly's sake, he died for Lilly's son and there is a huge difference. Do I think he was a villan? Not really. Am I thankful for everything he did for Harry? Certainly, but in Snape's eyes it wasn't about saving an innoccent life or wanting good to triumph over evil. He did it for his own reasons.
gleekfreak10 3 months ago
He never saw Harry as Harry. He saw Harry as James, with or without Lily's eyes. He never cared for Harry whatsoever, it was all for Lily. Snape is a very complex character, and I think among the best. Do not sugarcoat him though, bad thing to do. Embrace his flaws, that's what makes him Snape. And to create such a flawed, yet controversial character needs quite a mind, so I think we'll have to hand over the credit to Jo Rowling. She made a character to hate, yet love. Fangirls bother me, ugh.
plaidcarogemm 3 months ago
@plaidcarogemm :)
NickTraption 3 months ago
He was a hero, but I'm glad she doesn't sugar coat him like too many fangirls did. He didn't do it for Harry's sake, he did it for Lily's. Was he very brave? Oh yes. But he was also selfish, bitter, and a bully, only truly working for his own cause. But that's what made him a remarkable character is the fact that he had flaws. But he was in no way a saint either. That's why he's such a controversial and interesting character. He had a bad past, he was treated badly, and this is how it came down.
plaidcarogemm 3 months ago
Sorry Mrs.Rowling, but for me and a lot another ppl Severios Snape was a truly hero!!! he risked his life everyday to protect Harry Potter, he die for Harry Potter sake!!!
larebe74 3 months ago

REIREI29 3 months ago
Snape is a hero, harry told his son albus severus potter in the end. he's totally misunderstood. he became deatheater because he's obsessed in dark arts and at the same time he also want to impress lily but lily didn't want that. he became D.E bcoz of obsession and love. but he choose love instead, he protect lily, not just lily but her family as well. he put himself in death. yes he only wants to be loved but he's misunderstood. he cared and protect harry like his own son!
barroluna08 3 months ago
Really, Rowling? Snape wasn't a hero? Of COURSE he was. He was only hateful because the woman he loved choose the man who humiliated him on a regular basis, had a son by this bully, named the bully's best friend as the childs godfather, then gets killed by Voldemort.
Snape was hateful because everytime he looked at Harry, he wasn't just reminded of Lily and James, but was also reminded that Harry could have been HIS, had Lily loved him. Snape was hateful because he had no loved one of his own.
REIREI29 3 months ago
Snape would have continued to be a deatheater if Voldemort never killed Lily. But because of his loss, Snape changed in such a way that he actually grew to like Harry. He became more loving and passionate, slightly. Yes he was still still spiteful and a bully, but he also learned to love/show compassion. Snape grew to care for his colleagues+students. Just look at Snape's reaction before McGonagall duels him. He is shocked. Shocked she would attack him. He cared for people thanks to Dumbledore.
SirAvalord 4 months ago 2
@SirAvalord He Changed and Became A Hero!!!
SirAvalord 4 months ago
@SirAvalord, he certainly was in a shock about McGonagall's attack. It looked like he felt unable to attack her and just ran away. And what about the professor killed by Voldemort. She says: "Severus, please, we're friends". He felt sorry about her but couldn't do anything. Just look.
WildKitten46 3 months ago 2
@WildKitten46 Exactly. Wtching Snape's expression throughout the last two movies showed that he didn't want to fight. That he was most likely tired of it all.
REIREI29 3 months ago
@SirAvalord I think Snape only became a Deatheater because he probably felt important. He felt powerful, to know that he would be in alliance with such a powerful wizard, howver evil. I think Snape wanted to feel superior to James Potter and Sirius Black. If it weren't for them, and other students mocking Severus, he probably would have never become a Deatheater in the first place. And even when he was a Deatheater, was he truly a bad guy?

NimrodOnElmStreet 4 months ago
@NimrodOnElmStreet How the hell is Harry arrogant, ungrateful, and whiny? And how is Snape just SPITEFUL? He was an incredible bully, he'd make his own students feel terrible about themselves, how is that being a good person? Harry was kind and willing to sacrifice himself for the ones he loved, while Snape regularly insulted Neville while favoring his racist students (MALFOY). I could give you so many examples that prove Snape's cruelness.
ABCDE29860 4 months ago
@ABCDE29860 Thank you! Somebody doesn't sugar-coat Snape. I like the character, but I find it annoying how many girls think he's a loving and sweet soul, whereas Harry is just supposedly bitter and angry. It makes my blood boil.
plaidcarogemm 3 months ago
@plaidcarogemm Exactly! I like him too, but yes, fangirls drive me insane. Especially the ones who have only seen the movies, because they really tone down his more nasty side in the movies. When I read the books I'm sometimes appalled by the comments he makes towards his own students, no one likes to acknowledge that he’s a hypocrite. He was bullied growing up, and that’s undeniably awful, but he does the exact same thing to many of his students.
ABCDE29860 3 months ago

GrissomLovesSara 5 months ago
Saying that Severus wouldn't have protected Harry is rubbish. I know that JK wrote the character but she must have been having an off day when this was filmed. Severus would have protected Harry just as he did the other students, think of what he did over the years; Protected the stone, Searched for Sirius Black, Gave Umbitch fake veritisium, In HBP he lead the deatheaters away before they could harm students and finally in DH he protected all of the students as much as he possibily could.
ElphabaLivesForever 5 months ago
@ElphabaLivesForever she know what she said, and i think that severus wouldn't portect harry, really,it's just for lily, and i think only that is a beautiful think cause his love was pure,i think the books and films are a little bit deffrents from each other, and i thnk jk rowling is the person who decide who's the hero or whos not the hero, she own the books , is her series, and you could not say that she was a day off or a day on,lol, sorry but i don't hate him his good, and i love this character.
xmileycyrusfanx100 5 months ago
@xmileycyrusfanx100 I am not denying that JK can't say who is a hero and who is not a hero, what I am saying is that she should decide which it is. In other interviews she has stated that yes he is a hero, a flawed hero, but a hero none the less. JK cannot say that Severus is not a hero, he was the bravest man Harry ever knew, he names his son after him, surly that alone marks him as a hero, otherwise it makes no sense, Harry honoured those who were brave, couragous and heroic.
ElphabaLivesForever 5 months ago
@ElphabaLivesForever i wanna know where is this interviews, and she can say he's not a hero, she's just say it now in 0:06,and i know that he's the bravest man harry ever know, because he saved him secretly, because dumbldore said so,and jk rowling just said he's brave but not a hero,it's make sense because he was just like she said in 0:09 that he's still that spyfull, mean person,he was before and harry named he's son , to honnor a person loved his mother to death and decide to help him secretly .
xmileycyrusfanx100 5 months ago
JK needs to keep a track of what she is saying, this is LIES! Previously she said; "A very flawed hero. An anti-hero, perhaps. He is not a particularly likeable man in many ways. He remains rather cruel, a bully, riddled with bitterness and insecurity — and yet he loved, and showed loyalty to that love and, ultimately, laid down his life because of it. That's pretty heroic"
And this is what I believe, yes he is flawed, yes he is not a nice person, but it is still a hero and he always will be.
ElphabaLivesForever 5 months ago
@TressaSilk that's not a exuse make him do something like that , harry's life was misarable , but he didn's treated many so cruel , like you said , because i think the only hero is harry , ron and hermione , they lived the real misarable life , tryig to kill voldemort .

@GetlemanNightmare I have to disagree. Snape cared nothing about Harry himself. In the book it even says that he wouldv'e let James and Harry die if he could've just saved Lily. So it was, like Rowling said, his love for her that made him save Harry and not because he actually cared about him himself.

GrissomLovesSara 5 months ago 3
Part 2 It's hard to explain but Snape's feelings were more honest than Dumbledore's. My other thought is that by getting Alan Rickman to play Snape he was going to come off as more sympathetic, complex and more of a beloved character than perhaps J.K. foresaw. We certainly don't only see Snape as Brave, we see him as epic, heroic, beloved and for many he is the defining character of the whole series. Yet he is a bully and he is cruel so how does Rickman pull that off? It's a wonder to behold
GrissomLovesSara 5 months ago 3
I love Snape but I really agree with her assessment. He was mean and a bully and nowhere in the movie did you hear him say he cared about Harry. I actually never got the impression he did care in a direct way. When asked if he now cares about the boy he casts the Lily Petronus. It's Lily he cares for... but of course JK saying had he not been Lily's son, Snape wouldn't have cared at all puts him nowhere below Dumbledore who used Harry very badly in a strategic, offensive way *continued*

@GrissomLovesSara i agree with you , so mutch , finally somebody really agree with jk rowling , we don't hate snape but he wasn't hero , he was brave and that is good two , but he wasn't hero .
xmileycyrusfanx100 5 months ago
@xmileycyrusfanx100 I never said he wasn't a hero. I think he's the biggest hero in the story aside from Harry. The only part I wonder about is how much he cared for harry directly but as Elphabalivesforever says 'he protected the other kids, he would have protected Harry' I think it's hard to know how much he loved Harry or let himself even accept that he loved Harry but he certainly wouldn't have just stood aside and let him die. I still think Rickman put his own flavor on it
GrissomLovesSara 5 months ago
@GrissomLovesSara ok, let's not tell lies, harrry look like james, severus hate james, that's why he hate harry,he won't portect him,and ofcourse as a teacher,he will portect the classe as every teacher would do,and this is normally , because dumbldore tell him to do it,cause dumblrdore portect harry two with severus, and i think for me dumbldore and harry is the real heroes, also hermione and ron,i don't hate snape but i agree with jk rowling , it's her books and she deside everything she wants .
xmileycyrusfanx100 5 months ago
@xmileycyrusfanx100 Dumbledore is no more a hero than Snape. At least Snape wasn't plotting Harry's death for years. Dumbledore sacrificied alot for power, including his sister. That's not a hero. So if you're tallying it all up then Snape has good and bad and so does Dumbledore. Lots of bad in Dumbledore. Lots of putting the overall picture above individual people in the war
GrissomLovesSara 5 months ago
@GrissomLovesSara ok , maybey dumbldore wasn't perfect , and i know snape two , not because dumldore sucrficed for power that's mean he's not a hero , power is a way that's help alot to be a hero , and if dumbldore wasn't a hero so why he sucrficed for draco malfoy leaving snape killing him , and why he tryed to portect harry when sirius was after him , come on , oh stop it , dumbldore is a hero , read the books , and read what dumbldore have done for harry , and the other students then talk .
xmileycyrusfanx100 5 months ago
@xmileycyrusfanx100 What I'm saying is Dumbledore and Snape are both heroes equally if they are at all. Dumbledore is not a better person than Snape. I think they are both part good and bad. JK was brilliant in this aspect of her writing because what is worse; Snape doing bad things to strangers when he was a Death Eater or Dumbledore plotting for Harry (his friend and almost his son) to die? It makes you think. I love Dumbledore AND I love Snape - neither one is better or more of a hero.

The last movie/book revealed that:
1. Snape was a Hero!
2. Dumbledore just used Harry to fight Voldemort...
3. Harry's Dad was a douche!
4. Neville is trully BADASS!
TXIIILightAgent1994 5 months ago 51
@TXIIILightAgent1994 I extremely disagree with you on the third point. We do not know Harry's father. We don't. All we know about him AND Lily is from other people opinions and a handful of memories. James was a little jerk in school, but how could someone who died for his wife and child be a complete douche? He loved Lily just like Severus did. And if Lily was as great of a woman as everyone said she was, then she would not have fell in love with a Douche after hating him for years.
JohnnyXFay 5 months ago 2
@TXIIILightAgent1994 I'm confused as to why you had to add the James hate. You people annoy the crap outta me.
supaflyninjagleek20 4 months ago
@TXIIILightAgent1994 I don't think Dumbledore just used Harry to fight Dumbledore. That may have been his original intention, but you can't deny that he grew to love Harry. Dumbledore was not always the marvelous person we believed him to be up until the last book (especially in his youth) but I don't think its fair to just run your back on him because of what we learn in the last book. Harry went through that struggle of understanding and accpeted Dumbledore in the end. I do as well.
mandabear1o1 3 months ago
@TXIIILightAgent1994 The last movie/book also revealed that:
1: Snape was a seriously misunderstood character.
2: Sirius Black was also a douche.
3: Dumbledore also used Snape to gather info on Voldemort.
4: Harry's mother was annoying. Honestly, what type of person is attracted to bullies?
5: Snape was a sweet, kind person who only wanted to be loved, and couldn't even get that.
6: Neville turned out to be a hero as well.
7: Dumbledore wasn't powerful enough to avoid being killed by a ring.
REIREI29 3 months ago 15
@REIREI29 I'll agree with everything except #5. Snape wasn't a sweet, kind person. Despite the fact that he loved Lily, what other warm hearted characteristics does he have? He was mean to everyone who wasn't a Slytherin and held grudges against anyone who got the DADA post over him (granted Quirrell had Voldemort on the back of his head, Lockhart was an idiot, Snape already hated Lupin, and Umbridge was a nasty woman).
mindlessman2009 2 months ago
@mindlessman2009 Well, I got the impression that he woulda been sweet if it weren't for Lily choosing his enemy over him, and then dying. Though, that last part couldn't be helped. He also, according to Dumbledore, risked his life everyday to keep Harry and his friends safe. And...Dammit, he was sexy. Lmmfao.
And you're absolutely right about your DATDAT analysis. Lol.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 that was dumbledores down fall..the fact that he craved power..not that he wasnt powerful enough.. know the difference
Tool78Maynard 2 months ago
@Tool78Maynard Same difference. Lol.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 Power and greed block your natural abilities to detect any flaws when you crave selfish possessions..(cursed ring) which in turn killed dumbledore.
Tool78Maynard 2 months ago
@REIREI29 There wasn't a curse on the Diary, though. The ring killed Dumbledore because of a curse on it, not because it was a horcrux. It would have killed Harry too if he had touched it. Likewise, I'm sure Dumbledore wouldn't have a problem destroying the diary.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole I wasn't aware that there was a curse on the Horcrux ring. It didn't say so in the movie. The book, perhaps? I haven't read it in awhile.
REIREI29 2 months ago
@REIREI29 Yes, there was. That is what hurt Dumbledore, not the part of Voldemort's soul.

@PineappleNicole Oooooh. I'm gona have to watch that movie again. Thanks.

@REIREI29 NOOOOO! Read the books!!!!!! They are so much better! The movies are amazing and stuff, but you really get SO MUCH more information from the books!
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Sadly, I don't own all the books. Just the first, second, and fourth. Trust me, I will find and buy them, Lol. And I do agree with you that the books are better than the movies. Much more happens in the books.

PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@Tool78Maynard Dumbledore didn't crave power. His downfall was that he wanted to see his dead sister so badly that he touched the ring before checking to see if there were any curses on it. It was not motivated by power in any sense. He even kept the elder wand because he was one of the only ones who WOULDN'T abuse it's power.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Dumbledores brother Abiforth or whatever his name is..said it the last movie that Him and dumbledore werent on speaking terms due to dumbledores "crave or obsession for power" or did I not hear that properly?
Tool78Maynard 2 months ago
@Tool78Maynard Well, It's not a good idea to base your character analysis off of the movies, because they are not always true to the books. However, when Dumbledore was young and in love with Grindelwald, it would appear that he was power hungry to Aberforth, because he was so submissive to Grindelwald's power-hungry will. He was actually just blinded by love, although it is completely understandable how Aberforth would misinterpret that. His downfall was DEFINITELY not being power-hungry.
PineappleNicole 2 months ago
@PineappleNicole Well you really seem like you are intelligent with this story so I will switch my mindset to be open minded and to take your thoughts into consideration. Unfortunately, I dont have the patience to sit down for a couple weeks and read all the books. Too much going on in life to obtain that knowledge. Thanks for your thoughts :)

5) Yes, he's older than Harry
