Jimmie is just in a few words the most amazing musician I think of his era! It's just amazing to see how he gets the feel of what he wants to play. I will just say this some of those people who added a comment to my earlier postings. Its like this go to itunes pick up any early fabulous Thunderbird album and you may change your minds! Jimmie lee Vaughan Is and always will be Blues!!
having lived in austin & seen the arrival of the vaughn bros in 1969. i am very blessed to have seen them grow. $1.50 cover charge & who knows who will sit in.....Johnny winter. and other legends. Thanx for the memories jimmie & stevie.
As a blues musician for more than 30 years, I know Jimmie knows blues and is the real deal. Eric and BB (among others) have said he is among the greatest living blues musicians--and they are right.
I guess you have to get the blues to get Jimmie. He's very cool and very true to himself. Muddy Water's famous quote 6 months before he died---"I use to worry about the blues after us old guys passed, but when I listen to Jimmie Vaughan, I don't worry no more."
It's quite simple: there's no other guitarist in the world who can play with the same timings and classy feel as jimmie Vaughan does. Playing stevie's licks is a piece of cake compared to what jimmie does. I like stevie but in my world jimmie is king. I have never met a good musician who says otherwise. it's all about feel, timing, commitment to true roots music. no circus, i guess it's for adults :)
@barnoguttlin Jimmy is such a beautiful player but he is like .oooo1 percent the player that Stevie was and remember just how many years ago Stevie passed.....cmon....
just for the people who don't now, this song is NOT clapton's song, it is a song from JJCale, clapton has made an album with JJ a few years ago by the way
This man is the real deal. Haven't heard alot of positive comments abou tJimmie and it really hurts to see a man who is blues through and through to get alot of non believers is just not right. I myself can say from being around music that Jimmie, is a damn good guitar player that can slip in an dout of different blues styles. so ppl give the king of cool his respect!!
@bjbmusic People want to hear some intensity and feel the fire burning, thats why Stevie was a hit. He plays nice in his retro style but thats where it ends when you are a regular joe
It hurts me alot to hear how some of you bash a man whos been playing blues music for almost 5 decades. Jimmie Vaughan, has nothing to prove he is and always will be the real deal. His tones are awesome, and he respects other players. He never tries to out do people even if he can. I think hes got so much class and i'm seeing him again in nyc this summer 2010. He is by far the nicest guy i've ever met as well since meeting him in 2004. I think hes like fine wine he gets better with age!!
For all of you stupid brain dead morons who don't know blues music, let alone the Vaughn Brothers guitar playing... STFU YOU DUMB IDIOTS! I LISTENED TO JIMMIES SOLO AND HE PLAYED WONDERFULLY! IF YOU KNOW THE STUDIO VERSION OF THE SONG (WHICH YOU DON'T), YOU WOULD KNOW IT'S NOT A RIPPING SOLO TYPE OF SONG STUPID JERKS. STOP POSTING ON STUFF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AND GO BACK TO WATCHING AMERICAN IDOL.
HOW DARE YOU TALK SHIT ABOUT JIMMIE. GTFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POS MORONS!
Jimmie has his own style. Some people don't like it, some do. The difference between Jimmie and Stevie, for me at least, is that Stevie was such a precise player. He could play fast, sure. And often did. But his notes carried far more soul and expertise than Jimmie. And Stevie didn't always play fast; he'd run the gauntlet, mixing it up in any way the music took him. Jimmie just seems to lack the "feel" that Stevie had. Then again, Stevie played like God was talking to him directly.
I actually agree with Rhanbama. There wre so many holes in that solo I almost fell asleep before he played the next note. Jimmie was good back in the day but like Clapton his playing just isn't up to par. I'll listen to Stevie any day over Jimmie
1) There are no wrong notes in a solo. They can sound bad, but no wrong ones.
2) Like many blues guitarists, he uses a less is more policy, only making each note count more, similar to bb king, although their styles and phrasings are different
3)Do you know what syncopation is? If there was no syncopation he would playing constant quarter notes. He plays in phrases, and within those phrases, he plays whatever he feels like.
4) His army of 'Apologists' like to listen to the blues.
Jimmie (with an 'ie') is straight bad ass. He could easily play like everybody else...1,000,000 notes a second, and just like everybody else playing today, sound like total shit! But he doesn't. He plays like a real blues player should...what he needs to in order to get his msg. out. And it's a good thing that you can "spot his style a mile away" b/c that means he's not busy imitating everybody else, like most players do.
I fucking love Jimmie's playing here. Is he the greatest in the world? No not by a long shot but he's got a style like no other. He reminds me of Albert King in that his bag of tricks isnt too deep (even though it was much deeper many years ago) but there's just something about the way he plays that i could just listen to all day.

Jimmie Vaughan, totally over rated. You would think that some one who's played for 50 years would play better and not sound like a second year guitar student.
your a fuckin tool pattydickhead. Mark Knoppler once said he doesn't play fast because he can't. that i have respect for. Being able to use the fretboard is being able to express yourself.. Jimmy says the same thing over and over. And clapton isn't much better.
why? why is Jimmy good or great at what he does? He can barely move about the fretboard. I'm sick of people thinking someone is talented because they are in the spotlight. I've seen sooo many better musicians than Eric or Jimmy in bars that will never be making records or touring...that's a fact.

HUH????? ARE YOU SMOKING GLUE???? Maybe you need your ears cleaned, he's one of the top 20 guitarists to ever live. It isn't fair in the least to compare him to his brother either, who in my mind slightly edges Hendrix as the greatist picker ever.
The Vaughans always know what they're doing. More than people would think, Jimmie and Stevie's styles are very different. Just the techniques they use, the way they would respond to a certain phrase, etc.
You can't say that they're alike. Hell, you can't even say that one is better than the other. It's comparing an apple to an orange.
Comparing blues to metal is like comparing cream and roast beef. It's impossible to do.
Sorry I wrote this post when I was sort of hungry.
Jimmie Vaughan gives me chills because I get his style. He is tastefull, he's down with the blues and his tone is perfect. Alot of people loves him, though I don't listen to guitarists like Van Halen doesn't mean I don't respect the fact that his music has other values. It's so many ways to express your feelings through an instrument. So let's cut the bullshit. Everybody thinks they are the "master of taste", nobody are. It's all SUBJECTIVE opinions.
Grga, holy shit dude. I honestly can't watch a video without looking at the comments and seeing you defend Stevie Ray. Your everywhere, take some time off. The world will continue to do it's thing if you let the next person to bash SRV slide.
Personally, nothing can ever top SRV for me. When he plays, I feel like I can tell what he was thinking. When he plays Little WIng and Lenny - damn - there's nothing more beautiful.
why does there always have to be a "best" guitarist? And to say that jimmie or stevie ray suck, overplay, or have poor note choice is ridiculous, what makes these guys good is their difference in style and tone. Is clapton a better player than jimmie, probably, but even though clapton is my favorite musician i need to hear other players and what they have to offer.Just cause you don't like a style of playing, you don't have to be jealous of their success.
JLV is the real deal not better not worse than SRV or any other heavy hitter. His tone his him, not his gitbox or amp. That is why you can recognize him anywhere .. JLV is amazing and those who don't agree simply need to listen. Faster is not better, in fact, less is more! JLV is always 'in the pocket'
I just got to say to all the non believiers that have posted comments, aobut how bad my man Jimmie is, think of it as Jmmie was the professor and Stevie was the student if the student was that good the Professor has to be awesome. Jimmie has nothing to prove, but if he wanted to he would but alot of guitar players to shame, he respects blues so much he doesn't need to do that. Blues is from you rheart and this guy is very very good!
anyone who played in the t-birds has to be tight to the core. think of kid ramos for instance. jimmie vaughan is a badass - yet apparently reserved for the connaiseurs. very riffy and unique. i'd recognize him anywhere.
jimi can vamp over any thing he cut hes teeth at antones playing with the best fucking bluesmen in the world including stevie if it wasnt for people like jimi there would be no blues
Of course not to take anything away rom Jimmie, but he is a very one dimeonsial player and quite sloppy. The only good thing about him and why people respect him in a way is that Jimmie is the brother of one of the rarest guitar talents of all time, of one of the best guitar players of all time, etc... But other than that, he is just a shadow and nobody compared to Stevie, who is a god among gods.
Nobody simply compares to SRV and nobody touches his level.
JLV is not better than SRV. He is not even half a good as SRV. Not even close.
And about Eric Clapton and his favorites and best, he actually said many times that SRV, Buddy Guy and Hendrix are the best guitar players ever (for him) and that they are the best guitar players that he ever heard.
He never mentioned JLV.
Jimmie is decent and ok, but he is very sloppy, has a bad voice, and shitty style.
For crying out loud, he can't even bend a string in a proper way.
You can't say JLV's style is shitty. In all reality it's very rudamentary, basic, and at times, a bit awkward. lol
It's all a metter of opinion though. But jimmys good in his own right. I enjoy his playing. Atleast it isn't mindless shredding like most modern music today.
Jimmy is one of the few we have left, learn to appreciate him.
I was at this show. It was in San Antonio February 2007 in San Antonio. This is part of the encore. I believe Robert Cray came out too but I couldn't tell cuz I was too far back. Clapton was smooth. Derek Trucks blew me away. Doyle Bramhall II was there too you just can't see him here.
And there'd be no legion of Stevie-wannabes, playing over-the-top blues scale/pentatonic licks, thinking that they're paying tribute to "authentic" blues, never hearing the real shit. Jimmy Vaughan has crap for technique and crap for note choice. Stevie overplayed and had no sense of dynamics and taste. Too bad the world thinks that he's the epitome of authentic blues, because you're all missing the real thing by not going back any further than Stevie and Jimmy.
Probaly, I've only been listening about four years. so dont get happy because you've been playing "Crossroads" on stage for longer than i've been playing "Driftin' Blues" in my room faggot
Try longer than you've been alive, newbie. So, you think you've got some kind of claim to "I know my shit", even though you've got so little experience? And what's with the homophobia? You realize that those who have the biggest problem with gays are probably closet gays themselves, right? Not that there's anything wrong with that...
oh my god youre such a badass. youve been playing guitar for so long. yet your biggest claim to fame is posting videos on youtube. that sucks. and youre right, im so gay. i make ryan seacrest looklike gene simmons
How do you know what my biggest claim to fame is? Oh, yeah, I forgot, you know everything. So, you must know that I make a good living playing guitar. What gas station do you work at? You're the one who has problem with calling everyone "faggot". Grow up and come out of your room once in a while, little boy.
Yeah... I've got several pictures of him playing blackie hanging up in my room. He sold it for his crossroads charity. Didn't guitar center make a few copies of it?
Funny,Jimmie started playing before Stevie, and was better than Stevie for a while, but he got so good so fast.but this guy I was talkin to said Clapton had his own good style, but as far as musical skill he sucked, funny thing is we were in a music store,so he like looked around and wispered it.But I guess the same could be said for all the greats,Jimi,SRV none of them knew how to read "music",but real music doesnt come from paper,it comes from the heart.notes on paper mean nothing, its how you play
Jimmie's my favorite too, with all due respect to Stevie, a great player too. It's so wierd to me that some of Stevie's fans try to impress each other by talking shit about Jimmie. As you say, Stevie knew where Jimmie's playing stood. So does Clapton, who puts Jimmie with Buddy Guy and BB as a player in his autobiography. I get the impression it's people who came to blues through Stevie, coming from Van Halen maybe, that don't get Jimmie and see guitar as a drag race between Jimi, Page & SRV
And I discovered the blues through that same route. Jimmy Page -> SRV -> Albert King + Collins + The Three Kings + Buddy + Jimmie (and a whole lot more)
But, it seems that these guys really don't look beyond SRV at all, which is a shame.
Jimmy has a very nice distinctive tone, but he's a one dimensional player. Not that I don't enjoy hearing him, It just doesn't move me, because it seems to be more from his head than his heart. Props to Eric for including him. Their friendship aside, I think jimmy gets allot of respect for being the brother of one of the rarest guitar talents of all time.
Great video. By the way this is nothing against Jimmie but I would have liked to hear Stevie solo on this. I think his style would play perfectly on "Cocaine"
Stevie didn't have enough taste and sensitivity towards dynamics to do a great solo on this tune. He would have blown a million notes for every one of Clapton's, and would have sounded like an overzealous amateur, like he always did. "Tin Pan Alley" was nice, but that's about all.
Are you fuckin nuts? Do you even know what blues is? Eric would be first to say and admit that Stevie Ray was at least 10 times better than him. As a matter of a fact, he said it many times (in various interviews and when there was a word about Stevie Ray). Eric is great, but highly overrated. his best stuff was with Cream, and that was all about him. He is too boring, predictable and nothing special. Stevie was better than him and there exist much more better than Eric.
I've been playing blues professionally with other professionals, some famous, some not, for far longer than you've been alive. Stevie Ray would never have happened if it had not been for Eric, and Stevie Ray would never have been able to navigate the the life and career changes that Eric has. Stevie Ray was a one-trick pony, where Eric has sustained a 4-decade long career, playing with all of the biggest names in the business.
I have seen both of these legends live. Jimmy in Memphis, Eric in Chicago. Great entertainers. Legends of course. Jimmy is never given enough credit for his skill and showmanship. Sad to say, but true. Awesome video.
He sucks. Technique sucks, note choice sucks. Clapton plays such a better solo here than Jimmy ever will. He needs to lose the capo and work on his playing technique.
y'all really need your heads examined jimmie vaughn is one of the best guitar players in american music history. Stevie ray god bless him once said that he wasn't better than his brother jimmie he just played differently. Jimmie can play some guitar!
Listen how Jimmie get's into the solo, it's just beautiful. It's so many out there that only thinks about technics.. fuck that.. If you you want to see fast playing, blues ain't the right sort of music anyway..
check this shit out....im gonna settle your argument right damn here. every LEGENd of guitar was fried on some shit....jimmy wanst half the coke head srv was..tony iommi jimmy page all the greats were taking acid and cocaine. to open the channel that crazy guitar comes from. its kinda the metaphor for selling your soul to the devil to play un humanly. the drugs are the devil that we sell our souls to. suck on that shit arguers!
always hated that song Cocaine. it was like he was promoting cocaine (un-cool). he stopped doing it 'live' for quite a while because of that. he's begun performing it again saying it is anti-cocaine meaning now, but it still has the original meaning of that evil stuff, to me.
do you listen to the lyrics? "down on the ground""she dont lie" it wasnt written by clapton, the guy who wrote it said to rolling stone in the 80s that it was anti-drug. just listen to the lyrics and u can tell
i do not think you hate the song , i think you hate cocaine and by the sound of what your saying maybe you done enough of it and it caused alot of grief,i like the song and i think its a cool drug if used in moderation
how can somebody that thinks COCAINE is good if used in moderation,be commenting on youtube,on a fucking computer ? you should be at the zoo being raped by an elephant
lol lol wake up silly, i,m just taughting you as i see you dont like it .i,m just getting you going .your like a wined up doll .pull the cord and watch you spin
Jimmie is an awesome talent, you cant match his 'simplicity yet soulful embelishments'. Whatta player, what can you expect from a guitar legend who has learned from the greatest down at Antones!
Yeah, Jimmie can be kinda "hot and cold" in his playing. Thing is, who're you to judge? Has YOUR guitar taken you where Jimmie's has taken him? Not likely.....
He is a good player. He plays with his oul as you can hear. Maybe the solo isn't flawless, but remember that it is completely, at the spot, improvised. Good music doesn't need to be flawless anyway, and music is no competition.
If you ever get the chance do not miss this legend playing live, he will blow you away. One of the best six stringers ever, his ultra-subtle style is pure and true and gets right to the heart of it. Thanks for the vid.
thanks so much for this, it's always a trip to see other players react to Jimmies 'one of a kind' presence and playing. Clapton seems to be at the hub of the guitar playing wheel, appreciating and featuring all the great players he can, while playing and singing better than ever himself, imo.
I ALWAYS HATE THE WAY ERIC LOOKS AT JIMMY, JUST CUZ ERICS SOBER NOW, PISSES ME OFF

Hey, I can spot his style a mile away too. I don't know any other guitarists that hit that many false/dead notes in a single solo.
His syncopation is nonexistent.
Furthermore, I don't understand where his army of Jimmy Vaughan Apologists crawl out from.

TheBluestrader 3 years ago 13
Now i'm gonna listen to some more Jimmie Vaughan, and have a mighty good time.
TheBluestrader 3 years ago 5
Grga, holy shit dude. I honestly can't watch a video without looking at the comments and seeing you defend Stevie Ray. Your everywhere, take some time off. The world will continue to do it's thing if you let the next person to bash SRV slide.
Brickma227 3 years ago 4
Grow up you moron!
grga888 2 years ago
I'm surprised you took time off of your SRV patrol to think of that smart and witty comment. SRV=not the greatest thing in the history of the world.
Brickma227 2 years ago

"Eric Clapton's famous Cocaine"? J.J.Cale's famous Cocaine, covered at some point by Eric Clapton.
magundy100 3 years ago 2
JLV is the real deal not better not worse than SRV or any other heavy hitter. His tone his him, not his gitbox or amp. That is why you can recognize him anywhere .. JLV is amazing and those who don't agree simply need to listen. Faster is not better, in fact, less is more! JLV is always 'in the pocket'
sprayking 3 years ago
When I hear JLV it reminds me of someone who is just learning to play the guitar, and only knows a few notes that he can use.

i love jimmie's tone here!!!

Blues is from you rheart and this guy is very very good!
bjbmusic 3 years ago
anyone who played in the t-birds has to be tight to the core. think of kid ramos for instance. jimmie vaughan is a badass - yet apparently reserved for the connaiseurs. very riffy and unique. i'd recognize him anywhere.
thailow117 3 years ago
jimi can vamp over any thing he cut hes teeth at antones playing with the best fucking bluesmen in the world including stevie if it wasnt for people like jimi there would be no blues
m1ck57 3 years ago
Of course not to take anything away rom Jimmie, but he is a very one dimeonsial player and quite sloppy. The only good thing about him and why people respect him in a way is that Jimmie is the brother of one of the rarest guitar talents of all time, of one of the best guitar players of all time, etc... But other than that, he is just a shadow and nobody compared to Stevie, who is a god among gods.
Nobody simply compares to SRV and nobody touches his level.
He is the king.
grga888 3 years ago
You poor fools.
Just bad.
grga888 3 years ago

Rmelcher77 3 years ago

Rmelcher77 3 years ago

I get the impression it's people who came to blues through Stevie, coming from Van Halen maybe, that don't get Jimmie and see guitar as a drag race between Jimi, Page & SRV
jayscott49 3 years ago
You're right.
And I discovered the blues through that same route. Jimmy Page -> SRV -> Albert King + Collins + The Three Kings + Buddy + Jimmie (and a whole lot more)
But, it seems that these guys really don't look beyond SRV at all, which is a shame.
JilaX 3 years ago
I totally agree, buy making it a 'who's best' race, they miss
the unique artistry and soul of all these guys, which is the point really.
btw, Jimmie is SO outside, and funky and trippy here, incredible, makes Clapton laugh with pleasure.

I think his style would play perfectly on "Cocaine"
claptonhendrix1 4 years ago 2
Stevie didn't have enough taste and sensitivity towards dynamics to do a great solo on this tune. He would have blown a million notes for every one of Clapton's, and would have sounded like an overzealous amateur, like he always did. "Tin Pan Alley" was nice, but that's about all.
funkifyyourlife 3 years ago
Are you fuckin nuts? Do you even know what blues is? Eric would be first to say and admit that Stevie Ray was at least 10 times better than him. As a matter of a fact, he said it many times (in various interviews and when there was a word about Stevie Ray). Eric is great, but highly overrated. his best stuff was with Cream, and that was all about him. He is too boring, predictable and nothing special. Stevie was better than him and there exist much more better than Eric.
grga888 3 years ago
I've been playing blues professionally with other professionals, some famous, some not, for far longer than you've been alive. Stevie Ray would never have happened if it had not been for Eric, and Stevie Ray would never have been able to navigate the the life and career changes that Eric has. Stevie Ray was a one-trick pony, where Eric has sustained a 4-decade long career, playing with all of the biggest names in the business.

He sucks. Technique sucks, note choice sucks. Clapton plays such a better solo here than Jimmy ever will. He needs to lose the capo and work on his playing technique.

always hated that song Cocaine. it was like he was promoting cocaine (un-cool). he stopped doing it 'live' for quite a while because of that. he's begun performing it again saying it is anti-cocaine meaning now, but it still has the original meaning of that evil stuff, to me.

He is a good player. He plays with his oul as you can hear. Maybe the solo isn't flawless, but remember that it is completely, at the spot, improvised. Good music doesn't need to be flawless anyway, and music is no competition.

thanks so much for this, it's always a trip to see other players react to Jimmies 'one of a kind' presence and playing. Clapton seems to be at the hub of the guitar playing wheel, appreciating and featuring all the great players he can, while playing and singing better than ever himself, imo.
