i actually read this book about a jewish (orthodox) lesbian and how she struggled with it and her religion and i cant remember the title for the life of me, but look it up!
I didn't think it was that long. i know this is an older one but still relevant for sure. I'm new to this whole thing but I respect you guys putting yourselves out there. I love your videos and can relate to the black and white ideals of the midwest. Keep on Rockin' it! You the tops!
I stuck around for the whole video! ^_^ I would consider myself "queer" based on my outlook on my own sexuality, and find it nerve-racking sometimes to just come out and say that to people in anything other than my writing (which is more impersonal). I think it takes a lot of courage to make videos like these so I salute you Mara!
You really hit the nail on the head so many times in your videos. You are such a good thing for this poor, disastrous old world of ours :0. After years (and YEARS) of trying to explain that being gay is like having blue eyes, it's not something I can change, I think she is finally getting it. So much of what you said is exactly my story, except that I'm not from a strongly religious family. My family does have very strong "have to have a straight family with kids" values though. It's tough.
Hey Mara, thank you for coming out... again! LOL. We think you're brilliant and a very intelligent person. It's nice to see people who are staying true to who they are. Kudos right backatcha!
personally i feel uncomfortable with secrets n ppl assume i'm str8, so go in that direction with conversations then i have to tell them anyway n then there is an arkward moments for both of us. so wearing it on my sleeve is easier n honest. n why not?
It seems like an attention thing to me. I mean, If your gay fine, that's your choice, but that doesn't mean that you should go around tooting that horn all day. It only makes you look like a douche bag yaknow. Say I was a firefighter and I went around pointing that out constantly, don't you think I'd come across as something of a d bag? Also, why do random people you're not sexually interested in need to know what your orientation is? Sometimes there's just no need to point it out.
mostly the closet just scares the fuck out of me, coz it reminds me of too much shit, i personally don't go around tooting, i'm just rather expressive n open n honest also attention seeking comes in all forms, being gay is who i be. i talk about my brother alot too but that sounds sweet not douche bagly, so its reason n perseption n i'm kinda interested n impressed by firefighters.
Mara, I love you no matter what!!!!! I si wish I lived near you in Michigan, because we would party it up gurlfriend!!!!!!!!!! Oh, I get so excited when I see you have posted a new vid!!!! Mara for Prez. Love ya gurl<3
of course i stayed for this whole time, mara, of course! I love every single one of your videos. I haven't seen you IRL for so long... but i feel like we hang out all the time, when i watch your videos. Love ya mara! xo
heh the only thing I know about Michigan is the Michigan Women's Festival's hostility toward trans people which seems couched in feminism. Sucks people are so ignorant. I thought it was interesting that you also find you have to come out over and over again. I thought being butch/gq, people would just *know*. My mom used to think lesbians just didn't have sisters and therefore didn't know how to relate to women non-sexually. ha!
Yea, I've never been to Womyn's fest .. and I really have no need to go because of that hostility... however I've heard from friends that it's loosening up... who knows.
This was a very good video! It is a continual process, I hadn't actually thought about it that much, but as you're talking about it, I'm like; yeah, that's so true!
Yo Mara- kudos for sharing about the sometimes challenging situation juggling your religious family and their beliefs with everything. Tough stuff.
Also (this is Ellen) I've had the odd occasion where someone's mistaken my gender, in the past; it used to bother me and now I hardly care- makes me feel like I'm sticking it to the gender norms.
Doesn't stop me wishing other people weren't so ignorant / stupidly insensitive though.
1. I have a Leviticus 20:13 patch on my bag I get so many questions about it.
2. The crush is mutual, we're a sexy sassy smart gaggle
3. I just wanted to thank you for sharing the weight vs. sexuality thing because my mom has been dangling that over my head for a long time and I was on the verge of agreeing
BIG GIRLS REPRESENT!! As awful as it sounds, I see where your mom is coming from, even though the logic there is impossible to follow. It's her way of working through a reculturation ie. my daughter is different and I have to figure out what that means. I know it's really hard to stay out of the closet when you don't have a long term relationship. My partner's dad, also conservative Jew who voted for GW, was shitty to me at first and it took him years to accept us as a couple. Give her time :-)
Good luck with your mother and everything. I know what you mean. Luckily for me my parents don't care what my sexual orientation is (only my mother knows, though) but it still feels like they don't really understand. It's SO frustrating.
im growing up in a conservative jewish household. my mom was catholic and then converted. she went to a college where she was taught by nuns. anyways im not out to my parents although i am out to most everyone else.
i feel like im in a similar situation bc i identify as queer. Im thinking of coming out to my parents as gay though bc it seems like that is something that they could understand better.
I can relate to your mom not wanting to believe it. When I first came out to my mother, she seemed more set on the idea that I had a gf because I did at the time rather than the fact that I was telling her I was gay. If it would have happened when I wasn't dating anyone, would she have had the same reaction? It makes me wonder.
The Continual process- this is ALWAYS on my mind when I meet new people(happened to me twice this weekend). I love it when people don't believe me...
So, random funny story that my friend that sometimes dresses femininely told me yesterday. He said that he gets referred to as "mam" more often when he isn't wearing make up and hasn't shaved. It made me giggle, so I thought I'd make a random comment. I actually started making a response video with that story in it, but decided against it.
Mara I love your videos and always watch them all the way through - you could be like AJ and have a secret word to see which of your viewers actually stick with you for 8 minutes :)
I'm sure it's a tough process for everyone on the spectrum in this part of the country - I live in Toledo for now and know how closed minded people can be, it's almost better to just smile and keep your mouth shut to most people.
I look at that verse (lev 20:13) as an equality verse, let me explain. Women were already treaded at that time like property, and imagine the struggle in their mind back then. So, I see it like this, that mankind should not control mankind as we have taught ourselves to do with womankind; and it's not like mankind has still figured out how to stop violating others with words or with actions even now, maybe a little, but certainly not fully. Great post BTW.
I'm really worried about coming out to my parents and my friends. Some of them know Im bisexual, but most of them don't know that I'm serious about it.
Religion is opium of the people...
Stay the way you are!
