This was an amazing mission that sparked the imaginations of millions of school kids to chase their dreams and study the sciences. I remember this mission well, and now I teach science and actually do scientific work in botany, zoology, genetics and solar power. All my work goes into trying to save my little corner of the planet.
What a waste of $...3 or 4 missions lasting a month each...then splashdown to Earth...Why can't we just get the hi-tech stuff released and fly off into other star systems already?
@FantasticBob7000 I am now 63.I was 22 when the first men landed on the moon in July,1969.I have been following space since the Russians launched Sputnik.The things I could only dream of in the "50s I saw happen in the '60s.The first Skylab crew had some repairs to do on the Skylab before they could live in it.It was damaged during launch.
@GGE47 It's crazy how time flies, huh? I was 10 years old when Skylab fell back down from orbit, and then Voyager 1 reached Jupiter that same year. I was sad about there being no US manned space flights until I turned 12 and the Shuttle first flew. Now 30 years later it's got only one flight left.
At least life has been a good trip so far, we have lived in interesting times.
The big argument for the Shuttle, was that it could carry a lot of cargo (and be re-used) but Skylab indicates that those great Saturn 5 rockets were probably just as efficient and probably cheaper in the long run.
Funny you say that, as the upcoming moon and mars missions will all use a saturn style booster with a capsule and payload on top - borrowing much of the design elements from the saturn and apollo programs.

Some of this video is from the payload bay of the space shuttle, not Skylab.

@GGE47 How old were you?
I'm told I watched the first moon landing on TV but I was the size of a bread loaf so I don't remember :)

It took the Saturn V to lift that behemoth station into orbit. It's huge, the shuttle would need 3 launches to get it all up in pieces.

and was the 4th man on the moon.

wrong kind of rocket at 0:12. It shows a Saturn V. The crews launched on a Saturn 1B, A shorter version of the Saturn V

@crunkteezy
a Saturn V was used to get Skylab itself into orbit

I wish we could see what Skylab would have looked like had the micrometeorite sheild not come off during launch.
