Let's hope the surviving Velvelettes, like surviving members of the Marvelettes, Cotours, Elgins, Kim and Brenda, whatever members of Jr.'s band still survive also know their ways around a pc and their way to YouTube so that they KNOW we haven't forgotten and we still cherish what they gave us. If this stuff caught as you were entering your teens, as it did me, you know that it may as well be part of your DNA, because you're never going to stop being drawn to it. I'm its prisoner and I love it.
The Supremes had crossover appeal and 3 really fine, diverse, talented voices that harmonized beautifully. There is no reason to compare these two groups at all as they were totally different types. The Velvelettes were much, much closer to The Vandellas in sound and style. I don't think Motown had enough material for another girl group - which was a dying breed by 1964. The Velvelettes should have been snapped up by another label if they had great potential.
Ms.Betha McNeal ws absolutelt awsome as was the intire group. She was my music teacher in Mddle school inKalamazoo Mich and it was such an honor to have her teach me what she knew!!
This is a fantastic video. These girls still sounded great. I would rate Cal as one of the best female vocalists of the (all) time - Lonely Lonely Girl Am I is THE classic girl group record. BUT I have never seen The Velvelettes live (nearly did once when they appeared with Martha & Vandellas but the venue was too full). Girls, if you're ever in Crewe - bring those dresses and call in - our living room is just big enough for a one off performance lol.
This video is one of the coolest on YouTube!! If you aren't in a good mood after this, then it is really a bad day! Unreal how these ladies can still bring it!!
I love this Velvelletes video! And I really am a huge girl groups fan... But if you folks on here like this sound...and rockin' the house...do yourself a little favor (if you haven't already) and key in The Spinners...and check out their live performances of Might Love...and the one of them at the 75 Grammy's...just surf around over there. The Spinners rocked the house too...about a decade or so later.
i love this song am doing it in a show in manchester with my stage school its at the palace theatre in june (i think) the school is called theatretrain
Berry Gordy Jr. thought the Velvelettes had the talent and look to go all the way but he was never able to capture a niche for them. An album would have made a difference and was repeatedly put off when various girls came into the group as replacements. Hearing all that went UNreleased is a revelation as these girls could put any song over! "He Was Really Sayin' Something" also was recorded with the Marvelettes and issued as an album track.
i love it..Love iT..LOVE iT..!!!,..i remember growing up to this music, i loved it then as much as i still love it now...i can listen to this all day/all night and still never get tired of hearing it,..many many thanks..pls keep post'n all this great music..lotsa love !!!
The Velvelettes were terrific and deserved much more air play and fame than they were given. I enjoyed The Supremes but they were presented as princesses. That's not meant as an insult. However, the Velvelettes, Marveleettes, Martha and the Vandellas:they were allowed by the powers at Motown to rock.
Glamour was in short supply in the '60's. I liked it then and now. I still enjoy the music of my youth. All right, I'll end the suspense. 58 is my age and not my IQ or waist size (yet).
They were terrific and rocked similar to Martha & the Vandellas and The Marvelletes
yet easily held their own. What a treat! Thanks for posting performances of this talented trio that deserve to be remembered, appreciated, and enjoyed. "You go, girls!"
can you be honest and tell us what you realy think about Diana ross when at Motown what is the truth about how she treated the other ladies of Motown and even her fellow Supremes ?
I had no idea these beauiful ladies existed! The chic on the right is yum yum!!! Ok - I said it - she is..........yeah - she is - and then some.......
These girls are great ... they deserved more radio play than they got. It must have been tough to be in the same company with the Marvelettes, the Vandellas and especially, the Supremes. They had some great songs though.
I liked the '80s remake by Bananarama and Fun Boy Three, primarily because I had a vague memory of an original version from the '60s. It must've sounded like this. By the way, do they have glitter makeup on their shoulders and arms here, or is it just the quality of the video image? Goes with the "bridesmaid dresses", I guess.
Great song, great singers, but I want to know how they got their hands on my bridesmaids' dresses!? (I still can't believe I made them wear stuff like that. Why did I think we were starring in a Motown video?)
True. In fact, I made them wear two pairs of panties, just in case. (It was an open bar, and you know how people can get.)
I remember Britney's wedding photos - the pimps and ho's attire. What do you want to bet she's at home right now, burning K-Fed's face out of every one of them with a lit cigarette?
Thank you so much for the post - I always wondered who did the original. These ladies are marvelous. I love the Motown look - the groups always looked classy. Why don't oldies stations play this song??? They are as bad as modern stations with their limited playlists!
This is great and I love it very much. One of the best and one of my favorite girl group. They are the greatest. Cal has sweet excellent voice and I love the way she sings.
She is very lovely and pretty too. Her cousins are great too and I enjoyed their singing too. Hat off to you, Ian. You did an outstanding job and Thank you for putting this up. Excellent well done.

Hi, I'm Søren from Denmark. I hope that people who like this music will join up to receive "Reaching For The Best - The IAN LEVINE Newsletter". I'm doing a regular e-mail newsletter for people who are fans of Ian Levine's music, just like myself. It's all free, it's with Ian's full co-operation, so please join in!
The Velvelettes' material on Motorcity belong to the absolute cream of the crop of all the many artists for this project. The girls still looked stunningly beautiful, their harmonies are nothing short of glorious. "One Door Closes, Another Opens" and "It Keeps Reminding Me" were fabulous new recordings, and the re-recordings including "He Was Really Saying Something" sound fresh and vibrant. Thank you, Ian!
This is not one of my personal favourites but I love what you are doing. Wonder whatever happened to Bottom & Co? Also, while not on either Motown or Gordy, I would love to know what the Lovelites are up to today.
Razelma, you're just fabulous. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart. I wish there were a few more like you around. You, Soren, Phillip, Andy, NRGFan and a few others, are the reason why I take as much care as I do with this music. You're my inspiration.
And you make the effort in editing all this stuff actually feel worthwhile.

As Berry Gordy didn't see the star quality in this group, he couldn't be as smart as he thought he was.
With the right promotional machine behind them, these babes could have really achieved something.
