I HAD A GRECO SG BACK IN THE EARLY 80'S AND IT WAS OLD THEN SO PROBABLY FROM THE 70'S...why am i yelling? anyways,i gave it to a friend back in high scholl.Sure miss that axe...
! just got a greco,I am going to change some things on it,but still this is a great guitar I dont care where its made!! the neck has a good feel to it not to heavy come on who has $4000 grand for a 3pickup lespaul custom these days. just for one guitar! be open to more then just a name because you pay alot for that name. nobody here is getting free guitars from gibson!!
I've been labeled a Gibson basher lately, simply because I bought a brand new EPI LP Custom Alpine White, and in 20 yrs. of playing,to me, it's the best guitar I've ever played! I just wish Gibson would relax the prices, there's not $3,000.00 difference between my Epi, and the Gibson! I could have bought the Gibson, money wasn't the issue, tone, and playability for me! Lots of great guitars out there, go play some, and compare!
Great comparison. When we recorded our first song with my band, I used a '92 Gibson Standard and my old Greco. Both sounded equally good. You can check the song and how the two guitars sound together on my channel, or type in No more shelter, that's the name of my band.
Greco is kinda thin and bright. Gibson is fatter and warmer. Also, I find the pickups in the Greco be too hot, a Les Paul sounds bigger with weaker pickups that Les Paul would have had the T Tops, those were some excellent pickups.
@TheRevelegendEMG Thanks for the kind comment! :) Guitars are recorded through a PodXT straight into the comp via USB, recorded in Cubase SX. Had I known I'd get this many views I would perhaps spent more time to polish the recordings... this really just all improvised first takes done in an hour or so ;)
Two Les Paul´s of the same brand doesn´t have to sound the same. I have one Greco that sounds scooped, there´s bass and treble, but less midrange (eg 700 with thinner 60´s neck), and another Greco with a more even EQ, and wam midrange (eg59-65 with chubbier neck and long tenon). Both are in the midrange price sector, from 81 and 83. Speaking acoustically.
I didn't hear drastic difference, except middle pickups.
Grecos (Tokais,Ibanez...) LPs are top notch guitars, some pieces even better than overpriced Gibson. I bet most of you wouldn't notice a shit if blind folded and given a guitar to play.Auto suggestion goes a long way.
@LabelBob Sure, maybe in the clip, but do the blindfold test.
While there find some real nice solid state and valve amp, you might be surprised at the "what's better" outcome. Every guitar is another piece of wood. To claim every Gibson is warm and fat is bullshit. It depends on so many things, from pick and strings to construction, not just the headstock logo.IN the end it depends on the player and the skill.I think Gibson is overpriced.Especially that we have Fujigen models available.Cheers!
I couldn't tell the difference...the Guitars are both great works of art. Greco's quality is second to none. Gibson's on the other hand have a reputation as being the monopoly of quality guitars, which means they can make shitty instruments and still sell the name "Gibson" as a quality of assurance.
@HardAsARock222 Yamaha sg's from late 70's early 80's are unbeatable IMHO...own a sg600, sg2000, sg3000, gibson standard 1987, les paul custom 2007. No comparison, my sg2000 and 3000 are superior to the gibsons, in every aspect..
@HardAsARock222 I agree, when I tested a bunch different Grecos and Burny's they were all very playable and sweet to handle. Not true for some Gibsons I have tried... not to speak about Epiphone, which I never liked.
All of you so called "Gibson purists" are in denial and you all need your heads examined. Grecos, Burnys and Tokais are made from the identical materials Gibsons are made from. You just can't get past the idea that someone copied an idea and mass produced it.
@BudgieBobbarooo ya, same material, mahogany. but the quality of the wood makes the difrence. and the pups, theirs a reason why they sell their guitars for sooo cheap. one is cheap labour, and 2 is the wood quality, poor mahogany cost dirt shit, AAA mahogany costs a shit load
@BudgieBobbarooo think of it this way, does a gibson les paul sound the same as a dean razorback? they both weigh nearly rhe same, and their both made of mahogany, the one i played even has a real flamed maple cap on the razorback. but they sound worlds apart
Who ever thinks these jap immitations are better then a Gibson who they immitate are in dream land. I played a Burny and it didnt even sound as good as an epiphone. It was dull and lifeless
WHy would you compare an immitation to the original. They immitators are incapable of reverse engineering it to make it better otherwise they wouldnt blatantly copy it
I've played a Greco 1976 les paul standard and a real Gibson les paul standard from 1976 and the Greco felt tighter, better, and sounded better but the Gibson was not far behind
hi nice greco i have a 1981 mint collection also 3 pickups in new condition never gig it to nice to take out might sell it i have had it for a long time mine is black , gold hardware anyway nice playing have a great day
@UniversalFlytrap I'd love to hear you do a comparison thru a different Amp...like a Fender or a Marshal...something besides a Line. Line Amp, well, you might as well have been using a distortion box. Awesome licks man, enjoyed it very much!
actually....the greco sounds just as good as the Gibson, maybe better, slightly different sound but wonderfully rich .
LP wise I have an Orville, a Tokai and a '60 model Gibson les paul- all three are outstanding guitars, I bought a new one about a year ago and I ended up sending it back because it just wasn't upto the quality of any of those other guitars.
Quality I think has slipped of late and they will have to learn they aren't simply selling a brand.
the greco's nice. . . but the gigson really kicks ya in the ol' "bleepity bleep bleep", huh? fun vid, thanks! mabye ya oughta put some WCR American Steele's or Motor City Black Belts in that puppy?
I would get a Burny Black Beauty knock off and put some Lindy Fralin Pickups in it and put a bone nut in it and put 6100 frets on it, that would make it surpass ANY gibson.
The only thing missing from Greco Les Pauls is the bottom. I'm not sure what it is that makes them more trebly but they definitely are. The Tokais between 1979 and 1984 seem to almost always nail the sound, though.
Well, the playability of the Greco is as good as the Gibson. And I wouldn't say a Gibson is like 3000 dollars better than a Greco. That's my standpoint.
You're right on spot, I usually mention Ace Frehley, Jimmy Page and Diavid Gilmoure as my main influences when someone asks. When Ace was at his best back in the seventies... well, I just love the feeling he's got. Btw, my band has released four new tracks - do a google on "Hellvalla Burn" or just add a ".com" to that band name for free download... :)
Well, you get some more possibilities with the 3rd pickup... you can combine it with the other two. Of course you could put in your THREE fav' PU's and make some nice variations by this possibility.
that sounds great!but i was wondering if is true that it loses some sustain and the warm and fat les paul sound!im about to buy one but im afraid of this!
I can say the Greco outclasses any Epiphone I have tried and some Gibsons as well. My only recommendation is go to a store and try one out. If it feels right... there you go. I love the guitar but it doesnt sound exactly like my Gibons LP. Just be sure to check the prices for the model you're looking at, I think mine was a bit overpriced but on the other hand it was imported to Sweden from US for me... so some overhead was expected.
i've got an Greco EG-800 LPC fron '78. it looks just like yours besides mine got Grover-style tuners. Too bad all the grecos had maple necks until '81... (i think it was until '81...)
im very lucky to have a 1982 greco super real lp..i got it for 100$ when the guy i bought it from does not have any knowledge about greco guitars! i got it with dry z pups!

I hear a big difference. The Greco's sound is thinner. But that's probably due to the types of pickups and pots in it.
