I experienced/witnessed horizontal violence and bullying as a staff nurse before I became a nurse practitioner. Also, I am a nursing instructor. Bullying goes both ways. I have had a couple of nursing students that tried to bully me, other professors, and patients in the past. Basically, they moved from the school playground to college to continue their bullying of others. I explain to my students that respect goes both ways and I will nip any bullying I witness done by anyone in the bud .
What people need to realize is that these gaslighting, slander, gossip and dishonest tactics are not sustainable, and everyone pays for unemployment that results from it. Anyone that says people bring this on themselves is living in a delusional fantasy world.
WOW. 21,470 views and only 11 likes in 3 years. Hmm? This video actually shows how workplace mobbing and bullying operates. When someone gets targeted (singled-out) at work; gaslighting, slander, gossip and lies are manufactured against that person in order to box them in. This is not just lateral or horizontal violence in the workplace, it is well organized, deliberate and controlled because everyone is in on The Game to road-block this person from every opportunity to escape their situation.
@grandforksvibrations I can relate to that. I have worked in care homes. I have experienced it myself, and seen it happen - it's a condition called 'closedown' where everyone singles one person out, often leading to the ousting of that person whose position is rendered untenable. Care homes are notorious for it, and staff turnover - and for the culture of defensiveness and paranoia over the safeguarding and protection of vulnerable adults from abuse.
THis behavior is very common in the field. So glad I am switching majors. MOst of the new nursing students are going in for the money. THey'll be surprised when they find out what the "Real NUrsing" is all about.
@TheRatadedospatas EXACTLY!!!!! I'm one semester away from getting my RN, and deeply regret having spent all the time and money on this profession. It is so NOt what Florence Nightingale had planned...and it seems like the nursing instructors like to pick particularly on us, the ones who are NOT in it for the money. Wish I had gone to Medical School instead if I knew this is the kind of people I'd have to deal with!
@fornow100000 THIS IS THE BEST COMMENT EVER! I TOTALLY AGREE! The worst is when they become Nursing Instructors and their inferiority complexes and power trips come out....

This video speaks to the white elephant sitting in the middle of the room that everyone ignores! Everyone is guilty of lateral violence and awareness is one key to stopping it.
I've observed these types of situations in the clinical and education setting. Personally, being the recipient of bullying or exclusion makes me supportive of educating nurses to deter these types of behaviors. These videos were short but straight to the point and carry a strong message, "Negative behavior breeds a stressful environment." This should be a part of training for new hires and annual training for those who forget kindness, teamwork, and mere courtesy.

You don't have to look far for horizontal violence in nursing. All you have to do is read some of the comments below.

THis so bad among nurses. Sadly, I think too much white trash and black trash gets into this profession and that's why you see bulling so often.

Is never too late to return to school. Nursing in America is part of the corporate world. Horrible hospitals, horrible instructors, etc...

I think that's why hospitals are now mostly hiring BSN level nurses
