These Cieras are tanks. I'm still driving a '96 with 325000kms on it. My wife and I fight over who gets to take it to work because it is still so smooth and comfortable. The loser gets the SUV.
this used to be my rally car, bulletproof!!! i used to have this thing wide open 90mph on dirt roads gettin a fwd car sideways, then when i got my lexus it became a field car, and lasted longer than the lexus! drove it the junkyard it was a damn shame. r.i.p. cutlass ciera :(
V8? when the hell did the Olds cutlass ciera ever have a V8? In '95 it would of had a 3.1 litre v6. The ciera never had a V8. In 82 the ciera was interduced with the 4cyl 2.5 and the 3.8, as time went on it had a 2.8 carb, 3.3 fuel injection and 3.1 fuel injection. Not to mention 3.1s have head gaskets problems. I have a 1990 ciera with a 3.3 96K killometers and I love it, runs like a dream.
my momma drove an 89 2 door...VERY PRETTY CAR and lasted up intill about 800,000...we amde SOOOO many road trips in that car...very reliable!!!!!!! oldsmobile was one of those...better american made cars!
I actually own a '94 Ciera right now. It's rusty, dented, wayyyyy outdated even for a 94. I freaking hate it. I hate it because I feel like it's and ugly grandpa car that I'm not even sure my grandpa would drive. End of may though I'll be replacing it with something a little nicer. But even though it's FUGLY, rarely and I mean rarely does it have problems. 99% of the time it starts in a dead cold. One of the ugliest most reliable cars ever made. I have no doubt I could take it on a road trip.
I like the Ciera and I love Oldsmobile, but this is evidence of why the 'This is not your father's Oldsmobile' was so detrimental to Olds' interests. Because so many Olds buyers WERE the children of Oldsmobile owners, ads like this only offended Oldsmobile's sales base.
They were remainders of Gms cookie cutter cars from the 80s. Still the ciera was a rock solid car by this time and critising it is kind of retarded just like this commercial saying it rocks or something.
ppl always talk shit about the cutlass ciera. i have a 93 ciera on "18 rims, the 3300 V6 has 125,000 miles on it and that bitch hawls ass. the car is 15 years old and runs like it's only 5 years old. these cars last so fuckin long it's insane. lets see if any 08' model car lasts for 15 years.
My friend had a Ciera. It had all the bad qualities of GM's large cars: numb steering, poor at cornering. But had none of the advantages of those cars: V8, comfort, smooth ride. Poor GM couldnt build a mid-size to save its life in the 90's. My friend got rid of the Ciera and got the dustbuster Olds minivan. The thing handled like and cornered 10x better than the Ciera, we were like WTF.
No for whatever good qualities the Ciera had, cornering was not one of them, even when new. Also the 2.5l 'Iron Duke' may have been bulletproof but above 40mph had 0 power. You would literally floor it on the highway, the engine would make noise like it was doing something but would take forever to gain 10mph.
Did you own a new one? Or for that matter an old one that was "right". When I bought my car it ran like crap because of numerous small problems due to age and incompetent mechanics over the years, once all the problems were corrected and brought back to factory spec, the car ran infinitely better.
Granted, mines carbureted (5.0 V8), and as such there are alot more variables than a fuel injected 2.5 4, but regardless unless you actually owned one new (or were even old enough to drive when they were new..?) you can't make assumptions and blanket statements.
Doesn't matter how "right" you get an Iron Duke, it won't be powerful. Aside from the timing gear, they're bulletproof, but none of them was powerful, and most weren't very refined either. They didn't get balance shafts until '89, so the ones before then would vibrate pretty badly, even when new.
It was very reliable, never once broke down, good miles to a gallon, it was comfortable, air con, heating worked wonders, never got stuck in snow and ice. I liked it. Sure it was called an 'old person car' at school, but at least it worked.
You know the brand is damaged when you have to say that your cars are not just for the old folks... This Ciera was so outdated, especially the dashboard. How can they say "Refined". Too bad!
My older brother first car was a 86 Ciera, which looked the same as that except a different grille, I never realized how much of a lack of improvements GM made to that car
The Ciera was outdated crap, especiall compared to the Taurus, it's main rival. The Taurus made it look stone age. I still don't believe that it lasted into 1996 with teh same design it had from 1982 (with minor refinements)
Well, I can understand, although that still doesn't excuse it.
The Ciera is based on the GM A-body, which was also the basis of the Chevrolet Celebrity, Pontiac 6000, and the Buick Century. It's a good basic platform, which was why GM used it for so long, but it was definitely long in the tooth by the 1990s.
BTW, the A-body debuted back in 1961! It would be revised for FWD by 1982.
Yeah. But they should have still redesigned it to remain competetive. If I had a choice between a 95 Taurus or a Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera that looked like it was pulled out of the 80s, the choice would be obvious, wouldn't it?
What I don't get is that if they were trying to appeal to younger buyers, they souldn't have used a Ciera, which was pretty much an old man special. They should have used an Achieva or Eighty-Eight LSS instead.
One of their biggest problems are complacency. They have a tendency to squeeze every bit of money out of their platforms, even when there's no more improvements possible. And, it's worked for them all this time up until a certain point, when the competition from overseas makes excellent platforms every couple of years.
Yep. One of the reasons why the imports are just pilligaging is because we let our cars age considerably, while Japanese cars uaually have a lifespan of about 4 years.
Obviously, that car was not "refined" in 1995. It's design was from 1982 (!) and the competitors were all at least ten (that is TWO redesigns of an average Asian car) years younger. Here goes:
Ford Taurus '92-'95
Honda Accord '94-'97
Toyota Camry '92-'96
Hyundai Sonata '95-'98
Nissan Altima '93-'97
Dodge Stratus '95-'00
Even GM had other family offerings that were much newer. This car should have been redesigned before 1991.
im sure they were referring to the Bravada for the 4x4 (even though it took a hiatus in 95 and didnt come back till 96, and the aurora had a v8 in 95)
btw this isnt your dad's oldsmobile anymore because your grandpa bought it from him, lol
