For the person who's annoyed about the tax dollars, usually local law enforcement take care of moonshiners, not federal agents (so unless your town/county has a serious problem with moonshiners, then your precious tax dollars aren't being used). Plus, they do prioritize based on what's important (they show law enforcement going after moonshiners here because...it's a show about moonshiners!). Additionally, only 4 unsolved murders in 5 years? I live in Oakland, where it's closer to 4 a week.

Moonshine (which is ANY alcohol made illegally, whether it's whiskey, beer, etc.) has a high-risk of making one go blind as well as causing other maladies because of the frequent use of an adulterant to make the alcohol content more potent. That's why it's illegal (preventing hundreds from going blind is cheaper than paying for the required special care for those hundreds of people for 20+ years).
