I played it with my brother and a friend while we waited for our orders at a restaurant. That is how I envision the game. A quick pick up game to use your down time and a conversation starter.
I did notice one flaw in this review. You said that any extra sanity tokens at the start of the game go to Cthulhu, when in actuality Cthulhu starts with no sanity. Other than that it was a good review. Zombie dice only has one thing on its side to make it worth it, it plays very quickly. It's something easy to do when you only have five minutes and are waiting to do something else but don't want to sit around twiddling your thumbs for those five minutes.
while I do not share your sentiments about the game, I think you did a good job with the review. Personally, I do feel that there can be strategy involved at times. Though, you're right; it's possible to play this game by simply tossing the dice and having a good time... which I feel is a great things because that is what the design was going for. What I love about this game is that it has broad appeal; I've even gotten my grandmother to play Cthulu Dice. It's a nice simple and fun game.
Personally, I like this game. If it's 2 players, it may not be so strategic, but there IS strategy involved believe it or not. You have to pick someone to target when it's your turn, but you have to be sure you're willing to risk what can happen. Also, with the Eye symbol, you may very well end up choosing cthulhu's result to eliminate more than one player from the game. It's a great game for wasting time on as well as the fact that for once, a game can DEFEAT it's players.
The dice would only be for this game (and I like some complexity myself), but you could always buy the game to try it, and then give the dice to someone if you don't like it.
The stones would still be handy for zendo or something else that needs lots of markers.
Cthulhu really is a overused theme. What bothers me particularly is that many publisher use it to just... publish some bad games. "It's Lovecraft themed, idiots will dig it !"
I guess you could buy it to recycle the die to make your own damn game. But what's the point really ? You're better off buying something that's actually good to begin with.
@Andromedax01 I'm one of those idiots that digs the Lovecraft theme. Here's the thing, though... There are so many Zombie games, Vampire games, Pirate Games, Fantasy/OrcVSHumans types of games too. Cthulhu games have not yet established themselves as a legitimate theme like those other games, but I certainly hope we see more Cthulhu games coming out. Let me know if you see any new ones ;)
I love the lovecraft theme too. I just think they paste it on too many games just because the name will sell. And I wasnt calling lovecraft fans, I was just putting into words what I think many of those publishers think of the fandom.
@Andromedax01 Totally agree. But how many crappy Zombie games are out there? That's my point. I think themes in general are abused, Cthulhu no more or less than anything else. Maybe less because of its novelty as a theme.
@XinBiDe Actually, I really think Cthulhu has it worse. Do zombies have a zombie word game ? Cthulhu has one... a BAD one. Do zombies have a zombies puzzle game ? Cthulhu has one... Do zombies have a zombie nascar racing game ? Cthulhu has one... All that's missing is a "Cthulhu shipping and selling in the meditteranean seas" game.
@Andromedax01 If you are calling Unspeakable Words a bad game, you and I could never be friends. That is an awesome party game for so many reasons. My wife and I bust it out on double-dates all the time and it's always a hit. We use a variant that incorporate the Cthulhu dice. We use the Cthulhu dice as an expansion to other Cthulhu themed games, you see. The puzzle game, The Stars Are Right, is also a solid game in its own right. Munchkin Cthulhu is possibly the best Munchkin game out there.
@XinBiDe Oh my, you like Unspeakable Words. Sorry. Bought it,found it absultely awful (last thing I need is dice rolls /useless randomness in a word game), sold it back the next month. The stars are righ is a solid-ish game but the theme is so pasted on...
@Andromedax01 Well, I'd just refer you to the reviews for Unspeakable Words to conclude this. Every review I've read, both professional and those posted on Amazon or Boardgamegeek, have been overall quite positive. The game itself has a near 7/10 score which is pretty high for BGG. I hear what you're saying, and I'm sorry it didn't click with you.
As for "pasted on" themes, I'd argue that there are quite a few games out there with pasted on themes, Cthulhu or not. Zombie dice, for example.
BGG isnt above the occasional oddity. Look at Talisman's ranking ! J/k. Anyway, I dunno, I think the Zombie Dice theme kinda works. Chasing after civilians, some of them defend themselves, when they flee you can keep trying to come after them... I may be biased though.
@Andromedax01 I think we'll just agree to disagree here. You're in a sizable minority if you think Unspeakable Words is a bad game or has a "pasted on" Cthulhu theme. The game bends over backwards to be a Cthulhu game.
As far as Zombie Dice goes, I would just argue it's simply a better game than Cthulhu dice. Themed or not, that's the case. You might say the theme works, but I say it's pasted on and about as well justified as The Stars Are Right.
Also, one thing about Unspeakable Words is that it really managed to actually be a simple Lovecraftian word game. The use of angles is a Lovecraft reference, as is the sanity mechanic, which I found to be quite inspired. It's a word game for people who don't take their scrabble too seriously, really, and because of its simplicity there are a lot of great variants out there.
I gotta say, though, I also thing TSAR did a good job at incorporating the theme too. It went all out with the components.
@Andromedax01 But dude, I totally agree with that Cthulhu racing game. That shit is whack.
And Cthulhu Rising is ridiculously unrelated to Cthulhu in any way. It's the equivalent of calling Chess "Cthulhu Chess" and calling the black pieces "Cultists" and the white pieces "Investigators" and smacking some half-baked mythos art into the box. It's true that the Cthulhu theme is a fad, but my hope is that it will normalize and produce some more quality games.
Bah! It's a simple game. I wouldn't call it bad for achieving what it set out to do. I bought it because it was $4.50 and why not.

Cthulhu Dice is alot of fun for a dice game.
Very clever game design that really captures the Cthulhu theme.

This, along with Zombie Dice makes good drinking games since they dont require much thinking and dont really have a story or point lol.
Steve Jackson really needs to work on something new, not another Munchkin variation. Its a great game and all but its overdone now.

It's more complex than Zombie Dice, but I guess that doesn't say much...
I think I will never purchase Zombie Dice, because there is no player interaction. However, Cthulhu Dice looks better.
If Pegasus or someone else brings it to Germany, I might buy it.

1. Love the t shirt.
2. This looks like a great game to take on an airplane or someplace confined where you have little space but lots of boredom time.
3. I will be VERY happy when you start filming indoors again. The sound quality is very bad.
