Skunk: You're right that they aren't salamanders. They aren't closer to salamanders than to frogs, though. Salamanders and frogs form a group called Batrachia. They're more closely related to each other than either is to a caecilian.

I've seen these (or perhaps a subspecies) in pet shops as a "rubber eel". It's actually a legless salamander.

All the information is on the signs at the exhibit, but visitors keep calling them swimming snakes.

They are not legless salamanders, thier an entire different classification of amphibian, but their more related to salamanders than frogs or toads.
