Well, I evidently missed these very talented gals when they were in their heyday. I would have been 10 in '63. Had my ear glued to the a.m. radio here in dusty little Tucson, Az. (little back THEN), and never heard a note. Thanks to XM's "Little Steven's Garage" last week, I heard their "That's how it goes", and I thought "whoa"! So, here I am. IMO, somebody blew it not getting these gals to the top. Perhaps Beatlemania a few months later derailed them totally. See my post #2 please......
@naderchaser This is Naderchaser's 2nd post of 2: Anyhow, anybody know if any of these gals are still alive....and how / where they are? It would be nice if some kind of kudos could be given to them, even though they're probably late 60's or early 70's years of age. The tune that I heard on XM of theirs was "That's how it goes"....and I'm not finding it here in YouTube. Perhaps someone will post it later. Yeah.....these gals definitely "had it". Hope they've had good lives. Joel in Tucson
They have a very tight vocal harmonies They could almost be the same person triple tracked. Can see how they were ideal backup singer to Dusty and Petula. Vicki helps out on the background vocals on Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon album. A bit of a contrast to this little ditti
Not to mention Downtown (Petula Clark), Shout (Lulu), Make It Easy On Yourself (Walker Brothers), Hey Joe (Jimi Hendrix) As Tears Go By (Marianne Faithfull), Red, Red Wine (Jimmy James), Trains and Boats and Planes (Burt Bacharach), to name but a few...
This is a good song, and they really look good on stage - they're obviously experienced performers. They move in unison and face the correct cameras when they're supposed to. Plus, the background of those proto-psychedelic spinning discs!
Never heard this before until I stumbled upon it on YouTube a few months ago. How did this do on the British charts? Was it released in the United States? If so, I can't believe it didn't chart. This has "hit" written all over it. Great song.
Really? Wow. Such a same. I never heard of these ladies before but this song sounds good. Why didn't this group chart but other crappy groups and songs did? Not fair :o(
I thought this was a cover of The Sherry's "That Boy of Mine". If you can find a clip of the latter, you will be amazed that it never became at least a minor hit.
I have to agree with 313pookie. This is a good song, but "That's How It Goes" and "He Doesn't Love Me" are much more explosive. Would love to see some indie record company pull the seven or so 45s and put out a compilation record.
These gals have big voices supported by equally big orchestral arrangements. With a little more push, they could have been the U.K.'s answer to the Supremes.
Am also wondering if this is the only TV/film clip of them performing. Great presence.
It was the Breakaways who were the 'vocal chorus' on Burt Bacharach's UK hit of 'Trains and Boats Planes'. They were the UK's top backing singers for years.
Hey, is this group the same popular female trio (Jean Hawker, Margot Newman, and Vicki Brown) that were brought in by producer Chas Chandler for backup vocals on "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix? They have a lot of class.
was this recorded on secret CCTV footage?

Which one is Sam Brown's mother? I think it must be the one in the middle, she looks just like her.

Jimmi Jam ran with this song all the way to the castle in Romania. The movement then was momentous.

These girls did all the background vocal work on Dusty Springfield's first album. For that alone they deserve to be legends.

Great voices and presence. They also made the chorus for "Question", sung by Sandra Barry. They are great!!!
