  • another cool way to start a fire is get one of those fire logs and break it into chunks and light what u need with a lighter. they burn a long time and can even get wet wood to catch on fire.

  • Don't you guys worry about ticks or other bugs and stuff by sleeping on leaves? Maybe not during this time of year, but in general.

  • @Nirvalica If your that scared of a bug bite smoke out your shelter.

  • what did you say your doing with the new england patriots?

  • Your going to wake up with a knife in your but if you keep sleeping with one!(:=

  • With a bow drill are you supposed to push very hard or not?

  • @slimlithedwarf start with light pressure and use speed to create heat, then add more down force to create the coal dust and an ember...U gotta play with it and learn as U go

  • @slimlithedwarf I think you are supposed to push very hard. Then it'll have more friction to build up heat.

  • I like videos like this where I almost feel like I'm there partaking in the fun!

  • OMG THAT CAVE IS NICE

  • great Vid Dave....did you speed up the camera when you were using the bow drill?

I hope a closer look of that step, but.... is there any video clip for close view of that step 8:37?

    thanks

  • The cave is lined with limestone?

  • It's hard these days to take most canned food and put it over a fire. It's all mostly plastic coated. How do you deal with that?

  • Comment removed

  • Dave this might be a dumb ?, but have you ever had problems with ticks using the leaf beds?

  • thats a awwsome cave i would live in that

  • where was this shoot located??beautiful....

  • Journal of the cave would be an awsome series of vids. Dave great work on all of your vids that you do. I really apperciate your hard work. I am glad you look out for the common man. As far as "common man self relience" videos are number one great FREE information that if the viewer pays atention they might learn something invauleable, but it also FREE entertainment, who needs cable. Keep up the good work I look forward to your next vid.

  • Great video as usual, looked like a lot of fun.

  • Can you tell me how to make salt cured bacon?

  • Dave, what do you think of the smoking bans inside city limits (a growing trend) will this trend infringe on the common mans tool & fire kit, endangering the future.

  • What kind of wood are you using for the different parts of the bow drill kit? Nice video by the way.

  • man what a great cave! was that in ohio?

  • More yurt videos anytime soon????

  • this is awesome

  • Entertaining and very educational, as always. God bless Dave!

  • Awesome. Like it a lot. Warm, toasty and concealed.

  • Woodcraft is a diminishing skill. Thanks for helping to keep it alive.

  • That's a REAL "man cave."

  • the only problem with Dave is he makes everything look so easy. : ) and it rarely is easy. Dave your a true bushman ! can i buy a dvd ? or dvds of Dave and the Pathfinders ?

  • what type of wood is the socket that you carry for your bow drill?

  • are you going to sell the alpaca blankets to?

  • Very cool video. Nice to see another side of you dave!

  • Dave can you tell about spiders or scorpions that might hidden in those leaves. How to be safe and sure that not is going to bite you? God bless you

  • @patrulhacaburai vast majority of scorpions in ohio are in the zoo's and pet stores =P

  • Dave, I really like the idea of Journals of the cave. Im from the Great Plains in Ks and was wondering if you had any experiance with sod shelters. Thanks!

  • if theres anyone who can go out in the woods and find bigfoot its u dav? future documentary?

  • Is that a Topper single shot 12 ga? That was my first hunting gun.

  • Great video as ever, keep posting!

  • Genuine cavemen still exist!

Nice job with the fire. How long did it take to charcoal the stick? at 3:34

  • Hi Dave!

I´m watching your Videos for a few weeks and I like them very much. Great Job, thank you for that.

I also like your hat. Can you please tell something about it? Brand and type, material...

I´m searching for a long time for a good hat, and this could be a good choise.

Thank you and have a nice day!

  • Why not carry a small Sleeping bag Dave?

  • DAVE,

I like the camera work here on this video nice depth of field..I assume you are using a digital SLR type camera? BTW... Alice packs and or parts for insane price if you have a need or anyone else does.

    Cougar

  • @wildernessoutfitters Dave why don't you put that wool blanket in some sort of waterproof bag? Does wool not absorb water? I know you say it's still up to 80% insulative when wet but a wet blanket at bed time can't be fun. Your thoughts please.

  • @Djohnstone1969 Wool drys fast.

    In my experience:

Injinji synthetic wool dries within three minutes.

    Alpaca dries within a minute.

    Wool dries within five minutes.

Of course, it does depend on how wet it is. My Injinji socks and Alpaca beanie have been absolutely soaked in the rain before, but when I got out of the rain they were dry within minutes. The only regular wool I have is my camping blanket, and I've only dealt with frost with it, which it melted from my body heat and then dried.

  • Thumbs up if you're more a fan of Pathfinder School LLC than Dual Survival.

  • Nice job with da fire better than most with a match n a gas can keep it up cant wait till da cave series also hope da yurt n longhunter series aint over but we undrstnd dat u busy whatevr u post we watchn love it all brotha...God Bless

  • Looks like Jeremy cut his Single Shot down some. Did it effect shot pattern or accuracy of a slug ?? I'm wanting to cut mine to 18.5"

  • Do these intros seriously have to be this long!? Smdh.

  • Simplemen55

Never wear jeans, if they get wet you are screwed. Definitely check out railriders clothing for tough durable clothing.

  • whats your take on jeans/ denum? i cant realy afford much else besides what i wear to work, but is a pair of hiking pants, or tactical pants realy worth the money? ive never tried any to compare with my normal jeans...

  • Is "journal of the cave" going to be a video series or something else entirely? If its a series, im looking forward to watching it, or maybe it was just a thought thats now forgotten. I think ive watched like 30 straight videos of daves today, their addicting. They'll tide me over until dual survival comes back on discovery channel.

  • Every time I see these caves I think about how great it would be to pull an old camper in there, and set it up back in a dark corner. What an amazing hidden location that would be...

  • lol.. finer than a frog hair!!! haven't heard that in a long time.

  • I watch every video you do these days mate, learning a lot, fantastic stuff. Plus I didn't know you were a bit of a celeb???? In America I suppose?? Makes sense really, you are definitely passionate about this stuff and know what your doing! Love the amount of vids you regularly do, very much appreciated. Jez Scotland. UK

  • Very cool.

  • One of the best videos i have seen from you in a while; just my opinion. At first it seemed like your TV show but as the video went on, we got to see you in a relaxed state where people get to see who Dave Canterbury is as a person and not so much as a celebrity. Looking forward to more videos like this from you! Hopefully we can learn from the series "Journals from the Cave" in this same style of video! Great video Dave!

  • Great video, Dave. Good job with the fire!! Felt like I was there. God bless. John

  • Dave,

Sorry if you state this already. But what is the blanket you are carrying?

I have my old US wool one. But, it is getting kinda old and was thinking of getting a good wool replacement.

    Thank you

    God Bless

  • Whats this about the New England Patriots?

  • Love the cave.

  • nice vid u guys make a exelent team work keep it up bro

  • Someone needs to teach them squirrels to hold still.

  • you probably started that friction fire faster than most people could with a lighter

  • great videos Dave. I think they'd be even better without the music. Not that I dont dig the tunes or anything! just feel more natural without! cheers

  • dave are you familiar with a squirrel pole? it is probably the most effective squirrel trapping method ever. it takes very little energy to do too.

  • at least you caught yourself

  • im sure theres a F*$# too to poke...lol

  • Dave, is this cave on the Pathfinder property? If so thats awesome and you are very fortunate. Also, since you have proven the yurt no problem, I say go caveman when you get a chance brother.

  • @D35TRUCT0 Check out Journal of the yurt 22 if you haven't seen it already. He gives a pretty nice tour of those caves.

  • @tysy73 Thanks, I missed that one. Those caves are really cool. The Pathfinder School has some really nice survival territory.

  • Like this if you ended up blowing at the ember with Dave in front of your screen!

  • journal of the cave! and arrowmaking would be awesome, thank you dave!

  • Dave, what are your thoughts on Hudson Bay blankets? Worth the price for outdoor use? Thick enough? ...

  • @peteypab81 Get at least a 6 Point

  • @wildernessoutfitters My wallet is making rude gestures, I'll try to calm him down, lol :-)

  • so that alpaca wool blanket did the job? it looks like the ones off of ebay that ive been looking at. does alpaca wool burn like other wool? love your work. im a big fan. Go Team Pathfinder!

  • @stanzibritovsky Not good enough brother Jeremy had to use his wittney as well. I think a queen may be better we are working on getting some thick ones straight from Peru

  • @wildernessoutfitters About how thick was the Alpaca blanket? I have an America's Alpacas beanie that's about a third to half of a centimeter thick. It keeps my head warm as can be. If I had a full blanket about as thick, I could easily stay warm during a lower Appalachian winter.

Also, have you ever thought of doing a class in lower Appalachia (such as in South East Tennessee)?

  • @wildernessoutfitters Dave.. I have a direct source in Ecuador for alpaca.. let me know if you want me to look into it.

  • Comment removed

  • How would you determine whether a cave is safe for fire, or if there is a high chance for rocks calving off from changes in temperature?

  • I am curious on how the alpaca blanket performed. Did it pass muster?

  • Great video guys. Journal of the cave sound interesting.

    Nate

  • Looking forward to Journal of the Cave!

  • On a scout like that why dont yall take a pathfinder walking stick with you insted of that reg. stick..just wandering saw u promote 1 on ur vidz....

  • @swampassoutfitters That Stick was picked up during the scout to make friction fire set brother.

  • @wildernessoutfitters o ok.great vid....

  • Dave, do you normally sleep in your clothes?

  • Good video. I would, however, be somewhat concernded about the fire in relation to the apparently very dry debris. Talk about a rude awakening in the middle of the night!

  • Dave the man is right sugar cure is the bomb. Also its cold enough where you are at to do it. I had a hunting lease for years in Jackson and it gets cold up there for sure.

  • Great vid, felt like i was there with you guys, cant wait for the cave series. Also I learned if your tring for a friction fire and your wood is wet you can spin your drill in the baseboard until you get smoke then stop and let the wood cool down and repeat until the wood is dried out. this will dry out your wood so you can still get the coal, i found if i do this techniqe every time i use the bow drill wet or dry it really ups my chances of the coal forming. hope that makes sense. God Bless :-)

  • amazing stuff...just needed some tasty snowshoe rabbit...cook and chow down the entire rabbit for two and go to bed.

  • Dave you need a new song lol

  • nice Dave thanks. got my leatherman wave today another part of my kit. well EDC. cant wait to use this baby. thank you you got me wanting one. few more thing and i am good. sllep system, tarp, knife. blind horse for sure. and and all ideas are welcome

  • "Finer than frog hair..." lol. Great phrase Dave. Perhaps this should be your new catchphrase for 2012.

  • buy stock in coffeccino people its going to skyrocket LOL ;-)

  • Great vid. Wished he'd gotten that squirrel.

I think I now know why so many stories from centuries ago talked about dragons that could breathe fire. (Not calling you a dragon.)

  • Dave, you should get yourself a foam mat from Suluk46, put it on top the leaves, poke free sleeping I promise. I cut mine down to torso length. It is 3/8 in thick, waterproof, and about 2oz.

  • hey dave what multitool do you use ?

  • @darynschultz Leatherman Core

  • Hast einen coolen Cowboy Hut auf.

  • Thank you so much Dave for taking all this time to show us wonderful tips and tricks. God bless you for serving our great nation and may your life give you many great things.

P.S. Is Jeremy related to you at all? It looks like he could be your son the way you do so many videos with him.

Thanks again for all the wonderful tips and I know we are all grateful for what you have shared with us.

  • Journal of the cave oh yeah

  • Just did my first bow drill fire yesterday. It was hard work and took alot of practice. Thanks for the videos. Take Care.

  • Dual Survival 2.0? Haha

  • dave, how do deal with the soot build up on ur cookware when cookin over fire

  • @TOW2012 I ain't Dave. But the Boy Scouts always soap their cookwear if it goes over open flames.

    Jesus is coming soon.

  • Dave, another great video. Dave I have a question for you, I would greatly appreciate your comments/opinions (maybe a future video) on how do you handle or deal with this situation? In my opinion the night is where we are most velnerable, cause when we sleep the guard is gone and we only have seconds if that much to react to possible danger. So my question is how do you handle this to feel safe?

  • Where did you get those alpaca wool blankets and how did they work out?

  • you need more soundtracks this one gets anoying when is repeated

  • Sleep over in the cave! Man, you guys have so much fun and life great lives.

  • Dave, your videos should be broadcasted on tv - or you should make a show. Either one - that would be awesome! Thumbs up if you agree.

  • This song is fricking awesome!

  • Dave can you go into more detail on what your doing with the patriots? Just curious, as a dolphins fans I hate them haha. Great vid. Journal of the cave sound awesome!

  • FUCKING (SORRY) AWESOME !!!!!!!

  • Will foot guess dave's go na stop dinking chacolet. And I cant get that coffeccino are

Dave where you buying that .Have not seen it at wal mart

  • @mogges1 Go to my web site, and follow the ADVOCARE link

  • Journal of the cave YEAH cant wait to see that.

  • Found your channel and what you do last week. Been trying to catch up watching all your Vids. Great job! So, the cave...Did you guys make sure the cave was free of snakes, animals etc before making camp there? That would have been a great part to know. Where I am from caves often times either have copper heads, rattlers, or bears in them.

  • I like deep frying that salt pork.get that crack line. But DID he say sugar curing guess that would be a lot better than all that salt.I'm assuming you would just put the pork in sugar like I would salt.I read a book some time ago on using charcoal to preserving meats has any one else ever tried that

  • Hey Dave how did that alpaca blanket work out?

  • Dave and Jeremy, this vid is so cool. Thanks for sharing the good times.

  • Now that's a real BOYS NIGHT OUT , cool vid guys , thanks !!!

  • Holy... Oh my... Wow. That bow-drill fire was a thing of beauty. Rocking video!

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • At first glance, I thought you had Les Stroud with you...thatd be awesome!

  • So...Journal of Yourt is over? Moving to Journal of the Cave? Sounds great!

  • Love the post brother! You are still talking shop but you are almost chillin.

  • Journal of the cave??? o hell yeah, please do that =D cant get enough of the Journal of the yurt =D greets from Slovenia

  • Awesome cave! In my region there are lots, but the limestone is fragile and cracked portion of cliffs rumble down each spring, because of the ice infiltration cracking the stone. It is dangerous to venture in those forever collapsing caves. Hard to find one smooth like this one!

  • Lol. If I were sleeping on an angle like that I would end up in the fire..

  • Wooohoooo, go patriots.

  • How did that Alpaca blanket work out?

  • Hey Dave, just wanted to share. I have a 9 month old girl (Tamar), when she hears your intro music her head turns, she loves watching your videos sitting on my lap! I cant wait till she can walk so we can go into the woods together. Thanks so much for making this special for us!

  • finer than frog hair... lol

  • Absolutely, where there is smoke there is fire. That bow drill technique is effective when available. Any bears in your AO? Well done, thanks

  • I swear you guys make "rubbing 2 sticks together" look like a 6 yr old could do it on the first shot. Dave, your outdoor knowledge and skills are amazing.

  • Love your vids man, keep 'em coming.

  • Who does the music for your opening sequence?

  • Who's been complaining about more Dual Survival? :-D

  • great video
