another cool way to start a fire is get one of those fire logs and break it into chunks and light what u need with a lighter. they burn a long time and can even get wet wood to catch on fire.

Keep up the good work I look forward to your next vid.
Dave, what do you think of the smoking bans inside city limits (a growing trend) will this trend infringe on the common mans tool & fire kit, endangering the future.
the only problem with Dave is he makes everything look so easy. : ) and it rarely is easy. Dave your a true bushman ! can i buy a dvd ? or dvds of Dave and the Pathfinders ?
Dave, I really like the idea of Journals of the cave. Im from the Great Plains in Ks and was wondering if you had any experiance with sod shelters. Thanks!
I like the camera work here on this video nice depth of field..I assume you are using a digital SLR type camera? BTW... Alice packs and or parts for insane price if you have a need or anyone else does.
@wildernessoutfitters Dave why don't you put that wool blanket in some sort of waterproof bag? Does wool not absorb water? I know you say it's still up to 80% insulative when wet but a wet blanket at bed time can't be fun. Your thoughts please.
Injinji synthetic wool dries within three minutes.
Alpaca dries within a minute.
Wool dries within five minutes.
Of course, it does depend on how wet it is. My Injinji socks and Alpaca beanie have been absolutely soaked in the rain before, but when I got out of the rain they were dry within minutes. The only regular wool I have is my camping blanket, and I've only dealt with frost with it, which it melted from my body heat and then dried.

Looking forward to more videos like this from you! Hopefully we can learn from the series "Journals from the Cave" in this same style of video! Great video Dave!
I just thought of a great idea. You should really think of making an outdoor smoker! Show us how in a survival situation building one is a great asset to the yurt camp style. I think this is going to be "epic"! Sorry it's a little off topic.
Dave, is this cave on the Pathfinder property? If so thats awesome and you are very fortunate. Also, since you have proven the yurt no problem, I say go caveman when you get a chance brother.
so that alpaca wool blanket did the job? it looks like the ones off of ebay that ive been looking at. does alpaca wool burn like other wool? love your work. im a big fan. Go Team Pathfinder!
@stanzibritovsky Not good enough brother Jeremy had to use his wittney as well. I think a queen may be better we are working on getting some thick ones straight from Peru
@wildernessoutfitters About how thick was the Alpaca blanket? I have an America's Alpacas beanie that's about a third to half of a centimeter thick. It keeps my head warm as can be. If I had a full blanket about as thick, I could easily stay warm during a lower Appalachian winter.
Also, have you ever thought of doing a class in lower Appalachia (such as in South East Tennessee)?
Good video. I would, however, be somewhat concernded about the fire in relation to the apparently very dry debris. Talk about a rude awakening in the middle of the night!
Dave the man is right sugar cure is the bomb. Also its cold enough where you are at to do it. I had a hunting lease for years in Jackson and it gets cold up there for sure.
Great vid, felt like i was there with you guys, cant wait for the cave series. Also I learned if your tring for a friction fire and your wood is wet you can spin your drill in the baseboard until you get smoke then stop and let the wood cool down and repeat until the wood is dried out. this will dry out your wood so you can still get the coal, i found if i do this techniqe every time i use the bow drill wet or dry it really ups my chances of the coal forming. hope that makes sense. nice Dave thanks. got my leatherman wave today another part of my kit. well EDC. cant wait to use this baby. thank you you got me wanting one. few more thing and i am good. sllep system, tarp, knife. blind horse for sure. and and all ideas are welcome
Dave, you should get yourself a foam mat from Suluk46, put it on top the leaves, poke free sleeping I promise. I cut mine down to torso length. It is 3/8 in thick, waterproof, and about 2oz.

P.S. Is Jeremy related to you at all? It looks like he could be your son the way you do so many videos with him.
Thanks again for all the wonderful tips and I know we are all grateful for what you have shared with us.
Dave, another great video. Dave I have a question for you, I would greatly appreciate your comments/opinions (maybe a future video) on how do you handle or deal with this situation? In my opinion the night is where we are most velnerable, cause when we sleep the guard is gone and we only have seconds if that much to react to possible danger. So my question is how do you handle this to feel safe?
Dave can you go into more detail on what your doing with the patriots? Just curious, as a dolphins fans I hate them haha. Great vid. Journal of the cave sound awesome!
Found your channel and what you do last week. Been trying to catch up watching all your Vids. Great job! So, the cave...Did you guys make sure the cave was free of snakes, animals etc before making camp there? That would have been a great part to know. Where I am from caves often times either have copper heads, rattlers, or bears in them.
I like deep frying that salt pork.get that crack line. But DID he say sugar curing guess that would be a lot better than all that salt.I'm assuming you would just put the pork in sugar like I would salt.I read a book some time ago on using charcoal to preserving meats has any one else ever tried that
Awesome cave! In my region there are lots, but the limestone is fragile and cracked portion of cliffs rumble down each spring, because of the ice infiltration cracking the stone. It is dangerous to venture in those forever collapsing caves. Hard to find one smooth like this one!
Hey Dave, just wanted to share. I have a 9 month old girl (Tamar), when she hears your intro music her head turns, she loves watching your videos sitting on my lap! I cant wait till she can walk so we can go into the woods together. Thanks so much for making this special for us!
I swear you guys make "rubbing 2 sticks together" look like a 6 yr old could do it on the first shot. Dave, your outdoor knowledge and skills are amazing.

Absolutely, where there is smoke there is fire. That bow drill technique is effective when available. Any bears in your AO? Well done, thanks

I swear you guys make "rubbing 2 sticks together" look like a 6 yr old could do it on the first shot. Dave, your outdoor knowledge and skills are amazing.
