love the rifle, but to be completely honest, i wouldn't shoot a .204 at anything bigger than a prairie dog. That's the only thing that has stopped me from buying one. I can't see the practicality in it. This being the same reason I just converted my .223 AR-15 into 6.5 Grendel. I absolutely hate tracking wounded coyotes..
@buckslayer812 I don't know what you mean by terrible shot. In fact I only missed 4 yotes out of the 112 my dad and I killed last year, 68 of which were mine. All I am saying is that I've killed enough coyotes to know they're tough animals, and I would rather not track them if I had the choice. This is why I chose to step up the knockdown power to 6.5 Grendel, instead of down to the .204 ruger in my AR.. We have all shot a coyote that ran off a few hundred yards before it died.
@buckslayer812 And to you're comment on the 40 grain Hornady.. Thats all fine and well But I would prefer my 123 gr Hornady, along with the added range and knock down power :)
@TackDr1ver It may be that you aren't as accurate as the rifle. Both bullet construction and SHOT PLACEMENT are critically important. Any frangible bullet shot at the shoulder will most often be a run away coyote, suggesting your shots are not on the heart/lungs area. I haven't had a run away with my 223 and 40gr V-Max's. BANG-FLOP! I don't have to sew pelts after the hunt using this combination. I hate to say it but, bigger just compensates for inability in pin-point accuracy.
@nobull60 Sorry, I forgot to mention that we don't call for yotes, we push fields and timber. I'd like to see you show me some "SHOT PLACEMENT" on a yote going flat out in some bean stubble. Also, I'm not going to try to prove weather I'm a good shot or not, over youtube. You are welcome to pm me and I can show you some groups and the rifle.
Thanks man! I may look into it in the future. I actually just made a nice one earlier today using foam pads and my ammo pouch, thanks for the reply though. When I have some more money il definitely look into it. And I love your .204 by the way. Personally I like a 22 inch barrel at the shortest but it looks really nice and fun to shoot!
Thank you for the response and I know what your saying about having the time lol. I am playing with the 39 gr. BK right now and it has been my most accurate bullet thus far. This is my first breakdown style firearm and it is a different beast all together when it comes to reloading
Do you neck size for it? I ask because I was told not to in my 204 encore but I have found that not to be true in my rifle. Fl sizing shot like crap to the point I was ready to get rid of it till a guy at work told to try neck sizing a few rounds. Groups went from 3 inches to low 3s practically overnight!
@kingrider75 Not currently reloading but when I did it was FL. A little tweaking shaved the .5-.4 factory performance down to .3-.4. Trying to get back into reloading, not necessarily for this rifle but for another Im going to be building that will be chambered for a wildcat. Currently using Federal factory ammo in the 39gr Blitzking and happy with the performance/ease of shooting. Time, space available, and load development are reasons currently keeping me at arms distance from reloading.
i just ordered a tc encore pistol barrel from MGM and when i chose the finish i chose a factory blue and it asked me for a "Shilen Select Match Blank" and when you click it it says stanless steel only.... what did it mean? we left it blank
@golfer15963 I would call MGM with any questions but Shilen Select Match is a premium barrel option. They are stainless steel only so are not available in blue. If you want blue I would expect a Shilen Chromoly that has been blued.
That's a great looking little varmint gun. I don't think that a lot of people understand that barrel length doesn't equal accuracy, especially when dealing with a stainless barrel. If you like long rang shooting, check out the .260 Remington. The .260 is the epitome of a long range cartridge and it duplicates or beats the .300 Win Mag in trajectory while offering less recoil than the .308 Winchester.
this coyote522 guy doesn't really know crap if your shooting at coyotes you want a shorter barrel for a quicker action i think your rifle is pretty sweet .204 is an awesome round as far as barrel length is concerned every round has a sweet spot throwing out some random number like 26 inches is absurd good luck syn just shake off that hater coyote522
Sweet rifle and I am jealous other than I do not carry a rifle any more but hunt from a bench. I would disagree though that the 204 is not good at ranges over 700 yards. I routinely shoot rockchucks over 700 yards and mine is great. I also shoot a gong at a 1000 yards but the wind has to be calm for that. Of course I am using a heavier bullet with a better BC so you would have to take that into consideration
@coyote522 Im glad you choose to display your ignorance in such a public place like youtube. Otherwise the world might not realize that there are people who despite their mental handicap still like to write about things they clearly have no business talking about. It might help you to actually read what other people write...you might have noticed that there was a decimal point in front of the 3 and 5 for example. I know what my rifle can do and really do not need trolls to tell me otherwise.
@SynisterPRC couldnt have said it better.. people dont understand an accurate rifle is more important than what weapon you have.. if it shoots its worth it.. and if its what you like and fits you even better.. Ignore the ignorance in people and know that you have a sweet rifle!!!!!

well if it was a varmint barrell it would have a 26 inch barrell or longer so you wasted your money on that.Along with the make of the rifle its junk aslo so you wasted your money what a jokeeeeee!!!!!
@coyote522 A .204 out of a 20 in. barrel is still several hundred fps faster than a 223 out of a 26 in tube so your point is completely worthless.Furthermore, a fast bullet is worthless if it is not driven accurately and there is much to be said about the rigidity and weight savings that a shorter barrel offers and the .3-.5" groups this rifle shoots are a testament to that school of thought. And as to your comment about brand? If it shoots well who cares who made it?
@coyote522 dude your a retarded retarded person, that rifle doesnt need to have a 26 inch barrwll to be a varmint gun, that has to be the dumbest thing i have ever seen. the barrell length only comes into play when the round you shoot has more powder to burn with a 204 round wont need a longer barrell to finsh out the powder charge. And A T/C contender is a great brand, Ever hear of a tommy gun? god your dumb.
how did you order that barrel? website? phone call? i want a 308 blued for that encore im going to buy. that is one of the best looking rifles ive seen.
The .204 cartridge is an extremely flat shooter capable of reaching out to 500yds no problem. However, depending on the the actual target, its effective range is anywhere from 2-500 yds. Ive managed to get it out to 400yds on paper and just under 300 on prairie dogs, both with excellent results.
i was thinking of making up a 204 on a ar platform i know in one article they fired an ar based 204 at 600 yds with good accuracy, but sometimes they get a little over exaggerated in their writing.
If you are going for 204 in an AR, definitely check out White Oak Armament, hands down the best $ for $ upper you can get. Ive got a service match upper and it will do amazing things. I will be getting a 223 varmint upper in a couple weeks from him. Its all semi custom, no crap mass production. Highly recommend White Oak.
so just curious how much do you have in that setup all together. looking to invest in a varment rifle and just wondering how much money wise different options will run.
The biggest expenses are the barrel and scope. Expect to pay roughly 500 or so for a full bull (1" diameter) stainless barrel match barrel, possibly more depending on the manufacturer. Optics are up to you how much you want to spend, there are a lot of very nice options in the $4-600 range, less if you need to. Encore actions usually run in the $3-400 range depending on how you get it. Cost wise, a used bolt action from Savage or Remington with a nice scope is going to be much cheaper than this.
i got a tc custom 260rem 26" heavy barrel with the same salt&pepper laminet
my trigger is exelent as well i killed 2 deer back to back with it last year, you would be suprized how quick you can load a single shot when the presure is on fist droped in her tracks second ran less than 20 yards
I steered away from single shots in the end because I shoot a lot of rabbit/hare and they like to group... but a very functional and hot looking rifle! :D
Ive got a CZ 452 Varmint in 17hmr for anything inside 200yds or so. Past that, the encore doesn't miss much but if you do, all the little critter hears is a crack, looks around, and then goes nighty night on the second try.
That's n-i-c-e looking rig! (DROOL) Have fun driving those tacks! :)
