I felt exactly the same way-got the movie from Netflix, and went out and bought it the next day. I've seen it live once, and it was one of the best productions I've ever seen, and that's coming from someone who's seen a ton of shows. LOVE Hedwig!
Isn't it amazing how this movie is what brought my family together?
Still to this day when this movie comes on my small family will curl up on the couch with popcorn and blankets and watch this movie reciting pretty much every word in the movie to ourselves.
This was filmed in a former restaurant in Markham, Ontario (just north of Toronto) in July 2000. All the four Bilgewater's scenes were actually shot in different corners of the same restaurant. The last song, Midnight Radio, was saved to the end, so they could paint the interior of the room white. All the vocals in the songs are live. (the instruments were recorded in a studio in NYC and played back on set. I was the location vocal sound recordist for the film. An amazing experience.
This is one of the best movie's I've ever seen! Not only great music, but such a great moral too! You gotta love who you are, or no one else ever can! Self love and self acceptance is the key! Love you all!
@coleycoleyface420 i used to own a smaller version--they gave them out as promotional items when the film first came out. i have no idea what has happened to it since, but on the back the URL listed was "get-hed DOTCOM' :)
So, Hedwig's backup singer, the one with the long hair and the beard who wanted to play Angel in RENT, is he supposed to be a transman? His voice just sounds so feminine, it seems to me that he was either a woman before he became a man or is in the process of becoming a woman.
this really is the perfect movie. It's just got the goods. I couldn't stand musicals until i saw this movie, but it defied definition. It's got more balls than any movie i've seen about penis or vagina, and it's not about either!
i hated this whole movie...im sorry if peole think im (close minded) but it really is not that good...is a musical about a fucked up tranny...which fucked themselves over to begin with i mean dont get me wrong this movie is fucked up but he did it all to himself or (she) lol it i guess would be best anyways point being i had a bi polar friend show me this and its literally been put at the bottom of the list under fido the zombie
@demonictitan23 you obviously didn't get it at all. it's not about a fucked up tranny. It's about dichotomy. The half of you that maybe kind of liked this movie vs the dominating critical side? It's about the duality of man. Women. It doesn't matter. And love. And rock and roll. I'm sorry, but you suck :P It's about trying to make yourself.... whole. With love.
@demonictitan23 How ironic that your bipolar friend showed you this movie and yet you still failed to appreciate the movie's impact on him/her. If your prejudice against transpeople really kept you from understanding the film's meaning, then perhaps you should reexamine the ways in which you personally divide the world.
The best song of the movie. But then again, aren't they all?
I watched Hedwig on Netflix a few weeks ago as a recommendation based on my previous selections. I've been haunted ever since, to the point that I HAD to own the DVD. Since the day I bought it I've shown it to half a dozen neighbors, all of whom loved it. I cannot get enough of it. I thank everyone involved with the movie for creating a 21st century masterpiece.
Same thing here. Just saw it on Netflix last weekend, then ordered it on eBay next day! I can't wait for it to get here. I love the music...incredible performance by JCM!
I have never seen any other that are so true and deep about the feelings of love and gender identity and doing things your way no matter what others tell you because you know that when you follow your dream the way you want to then it will be all the more satisfying when you finally reach your destination
She was a man in the film. I think its Mitchel showing that original sex doesn't create an identity which is kind of what he did with Hedwig, Hedwig has no real distinctive sex but Hedwig has an identity that is beyond just male or female.

Oh, is that why his character was played by a girl? I thought it was just because they wanted some female voices in some of the songs. being an almost all male cast and all.
I got more than a car wash. It was in this small theatre in calgary and hedwig came through all of the crowd and sat directly on my lap and gace me a singing lap dance and got me to sing a verse. I had a broken leg at the time so i was a bit worried he might hit it, but I can't say I cared much at that point, it was utterly awesome. Best show I've ever seen.
This is definitely one of my all time favorite movies! I cannot stop listening to the soundtrack too. There's gonna be a midnight showing of Hedwig next week here in Chicago. I hope I get to go :D
oh, thats so amazing! I would love to go there, too... but its hard to go from germany to chicago! Hopefully it will come to germany someday :p I hope you enjoy it! ;)
It's like the Rocky Horror of the 2000s. I love it!

@redgirlinbluedresses The character is a male ex-drag queen; however, it is a woman (Miriam Shor) that played the part in the movie.

Thank you! I always had a strong feeling that Yitzhak was really a female. I've only seen this film twice - such a great movie!
I remember the gummi bear scene where Hedwig said (I might be mis-quoting a bit) "I felt so... optimistic."

Yitzhak is a drag queen but Hedwig forced him to stay out of drag for the band

So Yitzhak's character is a man who wishes to dress like a woman but is forced to dress like a man for the show but is played by a woman singer?
Nice.
