Ultimately, conservatism is a philosophy of limited government and the Founders kind of "wrote the book" on that.

The Founders believed in states rights, small government, the right to bear arms, a strong national defense and a responsible monetary policy - all things that most conservatives favor today. (not to be confused with neo-cons like Bush)

I have no doubt that if Thomas Jefferson were alive today and had a radio talk show, liberals would refer to him as a "right wing conservative".
