@holloh9 great... it can take a very long time. Chinchillas are prey animals ...that means they are hunted by almost all other animals. They have been hunted, skinned alive and made into coats etc by humans,,,they have every instinct to stay away from us. Please be patient!! Take your chinnies in a small area (like the bathroom let them come to you, get to know you. They will warm up. Do this every day...it can take a year or more. Its worth it.Generally they dont like to be held or pet

@jglaser333 wow thanks thats actually some good advice i'll definatly try that i have them for almost over 2 years now and only my grey chinchilla (tiki) isnt that scared anymore but my beige one is scared for litterally everything and then starts running against the wall blindly and i am worried it might get him killed one day do you have any advice for that?

@holloh9 thats called "wall surfing" and is an expression of happiness. A chinchilla will bounce of walls, popcorn, smile, wink, and jump in the air as high as it can to show its joy.

Its really a beautiful thing and they dont hurt themselves, they know what they're doing.

@jglaser333 i dont think thats the case here because she gets scared as hell by almost every sound and then starts running against everything even in her cage and you can really see she is scared then :\

@holloh9 what does she get scared of... make sure the lights arent flickering, or light-dark over and over, play soft music, talk softly , even baby talk

dont move to fast... let her get to trust your hands. My female chinchilla is like yours..shes bouncy ...she takes off when she hears certain sounds... chalk it up to being young and energetic.

@jglaser333 they do have raisins in there food and she is just 3 years old but the other one is not hyper at all and they never really get treat food but i can try taking out the raisins out of their food and see if she stops being so hyper thanks for de advice :)

Chinchillas especially young ones are really , or can really be hyper

If you think its completely over the top then try adding lavender oil (edible kind) to the water occasionally, and make sure your chinchillas is not eating SUGAR

cut out all raisins etc, no treat food like Charlie Chinchilla etc

Most of the time you just have to wait

I have even severely abused chinchillas with plenty of love come around in a year or two

hey jamie.it must have been REALLYhard when tiki passed away.My little chinchilla(about 2,5-3 years) just passed away today and I can't handle the sadness.He encountered a pneumonia(i dunno why,everything in the house was OK) so we took him to the vet(a bit to late)i refused to believe he will die.(though the vet said he has very little chances of living) i stayed all night with him but then had to leave 4 school and when i returned...:'(( may he rest in peace in heaven,my little chinchilla :"((

they are taken when the chinnies just wake up or ready for sleep

some of these videos have taken 10 hours to make (just the shooting) cause I wont stress them out

he used to come in here on his own, hop up on my lap or shoulder

funny how some people in other comments think that somehow I have made him to be real unhappy

I just get a kick out of all their different facial expressions because I think that they are cute. This time around your Chinny seemed a little confused, but I know well that you can't always apply the same logic to an animal that you would to a human. Animals express themselves differently than we do.

While on camera it looks a bit like he is being "forced" and pulled for the camera,,, he is the one who also jumped up on his own free will to be in this position

my chinchillas are always in my studio..they love music

and sometimes on camera since chinnies are all fur... it looks different than what is happening

@jglaser333 Your welcome. I've found rodents to be very hyper, flighty and squirmy at times. I can see well your chinnie begging to be in your arms then wiggling all over the place. You know if you let Tiki down it'll just nose around for a bit then want to come back up in your arms again. My hamster would start to climb my body after awhile if I didn't oblige. :P

@jglaser333 No, i only had him for 5 years but he was not being taken care of very well when i adopted him. And thanks for the concern, it means a lot to me. His death was very hard on me and my family. He meant a lot to us, and we all loved him. Even though he was getting old, we still did not expect the sudden sickness he had. He refused to eat or drink and he just sat there all day, not doing anything. We took him to the vet, but he said that he didn't have much time left. He died that night.

This made my day. =) I'm away at college right now, and I miss my two destructo-rats back home so much! I sing to my chinchillas all the time, in fact they kind of have a theme song for whenever I'm holding them. It's pretty much the word "fuzzy" repeated over and over again with different tones.
