I am in awe at how their intelligence never fails to amaze me. I have a 14 month old female, Boo, who I adopted from my brother who is in the Navy and could no longer take care of her. I have had her for a month, and gradually been allowing her to explore my home, and today, she was allowed to roam my bedroom entirely for several hours and I gave her a lot of handling, and I was astonished that within just a couple hours I was able to teach her to come when called by name! Excellent video!
@eLectroChickLP Two rats or more is better than one but sometimes animal-lovers get overzealous and exaggerate - chances are a lone domestic rat with lots of human contact will still live longer and be better off than a wild one, which will have to battle to survive. Probably varies between rats and environments, like anything else. I would choose total loneliness over the company of certain humans...
I have two brother rats - they squabble but it's fun to see their distinctiveness.
WOW! can you give me some tips on how to do that? I have a girl and she wont sit still for anything because she likes to explore. How can i hold her attention?
Cute :) I have two rats and one of them isn't mean but wont let me pick her up. The other one will let me and she loves to be picked up.. They are both about 6 months old and are adorable. Also how do you teach them to do that trick. Will you tell me how to teach them how to do that trick? And the rat that will let me pick her up is an albino rat.

Hey millineu there is a little differnece...Albino's are more playful/mean and their vision (like you said) and there might be more not sure yet even thoug ive done lots of research :/ maybe even to much haha
ive gone into a pet shop twice and played with the rats but my parents need ALOT of persuwaysuon (i dont know how to spell it) to haave 1 in the house any ideas to persuad them
Awww!!! Your rats are sooooo CUTE!!!!! I love rats! My 2 boys Taeji and Keitaro have their crazy hour at 2 am hahaha... I can't wait for them to do tricks! Rats are the best!
how did u teach them to high five haha thats awsome xD
and my rats names are yukina, sushi and wasabi haha, sushi and wasabi are still babys thou but yukina already knows her own name (im not sure if it can compare with this thou haha)
i have rats and cookie my first rat just turned 2 .. she doesnt .. run after me, did yours just do that from the day you got her/him ? or did you sorta do that luring trick ?
I love this video!! Amazing rats!! I have a question.. I have a pet rat and he is almost two years old.. He doesn't fetch or anything but is really smart. He knows "kisses" and "veggies" and stuff like that. Is he too old to learn the fetch trick or any others?
thats so cute at 1:05 where she tries to find it, gets close and runs back like she got it. And then acts like "What? I brought it back just like you pretended to throw it :D " lol
I wish i could teach my 2 rats that... but one is a dumbo whitch means more harming light rays there eyes so.... i also need to tell me what i can get my 2 rats something they will enjoy alot for 50$ im a poor person and i do all my will to take care of my rats...
Do you wear leather shoes? are you a vegetarian? If so, that's great, but snakes aren't. I didn't own my snake, she would still exist somewhere else eating rats, just fed by a different owner. You know, your sweet little dog or cat at home doesn't feed on just veggies either. If you feed it dog or cat food something had to die to make that food too.
(my snake would starve if you put a frozen thawed rat in her cage then u have animal suffering in different way)
Yeah but you don't kill whatever goes into the dog or cat food yourself. It's not very nice coming into a pet rat video and mentioning that you use them as food for your snake. We KNOW snakes eat them but still. I love snakes but I don't think i'll ever have one as I had rats first and in my opinion rats are better :)
Ok, everyone's entitled to their own opinion I guess. I will admit snakes aren't as intelligent as rats, but somewhere in history snakes have either evolved, (or in my beliefs, have been created) with the upper hand in natures food chain. So sorry about intruding with my snake comments on you're video. P.S. I like all animals by the way, and have a breeding pair of degus that I've had as pets for years. They can be taught tricks and voice commands too.
Um, EgolantTed, there are two rats in the video. So, obviously, it's not alone. But if your previous comment was about something else, then never mind me. =D
ok i just got my first rat last monday and my secound one this monday they are my first rats ever and they arent very playful, will they get playful later and will i be able to teach them that trick its so freaking cool
Yea, they will almost definitely get more playful as long as they get lots of human contact. Hand-feed them lots of treats so that they associate you with "good".
@ChrisGray714 well i dont have them anymore.i let them be in their cage too much i think. i should have taken them out more because they seemed a little scared to be out of the cage.
hahaha, no, they are the same intelligence-wise. They only look different, and see differently. Rats don't see very well in the first place, and albino rats, like albino people, have a problem wherein their eyes get flooded with light because their irises are transparent(ish). So she or he might not be able to learn tricks as easily which rely on being able to, for example, tell the difference between two things by looking.
please help me, I ned to teach my new pet rat to do some tricks for my psychology class, I want to teach him how to fetch but i'm not exactly sure how to go about doing it

@socalbreme I picture it that rats are smart enough to a know a safe place where predators can't find them, but still be safe from human threats. That's why they would typically live right above or bellow our noses.

NEVER keep a rat alone. rats need live in packs of three or more to be happy. then again I dont expect you to have an appropriate size cage either...
