Tip for all you guys out there with maybe rougher style lives like Led Zeppelin:
When you're friend is hammered and you put him to sleep, make sure hes facing down, not up. Never put a completely wasted guy to sleep facing up, or this happens.
Only 32. Right? Very sad. Seems to have been, not only an awesome drummer, but was certainly a nice guy. And he loved his family and the band maids very much.
why is it that I'm half the age those band would have been if they continued to this day, and I feel sad that people like bonzo and hendrix aren't among us. well maybe it's better that way, maybe legends would never be legends if they survived, but seeing them live in their original lineup, no matter how sloppy or grey-haired they would look, would make me feel like I was a microscopic fragment of their history...
@ectomy1235 as steven tyler said: take out drugs, and you have a lot more time for the other two. It's a shame that back then, drugs were equally important.
He gived all to music and to the crowd. He received all from music and from the crowd. When the living legend died, the myth of Led Zeppelin became immortal. But is so sad. What we've got, and what we have lost.
John Bonham was a great drummer, but had a major drinking problem , and finaly drank himself to death ,which in turn killed off Led Zeppelin as a band , can u imagine how the Beatles would have made it without Ringo ,who came along later ,Led Zepplin was already in fighting prior Bonahams death , at 25 year old Brit , was pissed
I'm a big admirer of Keith Moon, He's about the only competition I can even consider for John Bonham, maybe Mitch Mitchell, but I've never heard anyone else play stylistically like Bonham. WTF is the deal with that?
@iamthewintertime I so agree. And don't forget, this was 1980, a very sad year for rock. Three giants passed away - Bonham, Bon Scott, and, heaviest of all, John Lennon. Come together, indeed... RIP, guys.
@ThisisfromUzi My brother was 22 that yr and playing in a great band . He said he thought his world was being systematically destroyed one bit at a time . Kieth Moon had gone soon before that , and Moon and Bonzo were his heroes. But he was very much into ACDC and of course held Lennon in high esteem as most people did . A sad time for rock fans

@flembagg966 Four rock musicians died in 1980. Bon Scott died that February. Two months later, Tommy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band died in a Jeep accident in April of 1980. Then John Bonham in September. Then lastly was John Lennon. 1980 was not that bad. We had many great rock albums released that year. Music died after 1994 in my view.
@tjrrockandrollmaster It was about 1980 that it all seemed to go down hill for my taste. The radio became a noise box I hated to tune into. I turned to playing my own records and listen to what I liked, wishing some new good stuff came out, with the rare exceptions I found some.
@SlackerSlayer After the disaster known as disco, rock was on the resurrection in late 1979/80 as far as album sales go. Led Zeppelin, The Eagles and Pink Floyd led the charge with In Through the Out Door, The Long Run and The Wall respectively. 1980 also saw the debuts of Iron Maiden, The Pretenders, Def Leppard and U2 (though overrated in my view); the overdue acceptance of AC/DC, Judas Priest, Genesis and Rush. Solo Who projects from Townshend and Daltrey were also superb in 1980.
@SlackerSlayer I also forgot that 1980 saw Black Sabbath come back with best album since 1975. Motorhead had Ace of Spades. 1980 did see the last time Queen would have a hit album in the States during Freddie Mercury's lifetime, Jethro Tull selling out Madison Square Garden and Boston Garden, Kansas tour with original lineup, Aerosmith touring with Brad Whitford as guitarist until his return in 1984. Styx were still huge at this point (as was Journey). It was 1995 when rock began dying slowly.
@tjrrockandrollmaster I am glad you enjoyed it. Of those you mentioned, AC/DC was the only non-disappointment. I loved all Sabbath, all Rainbow,,, but put the two together,,, I couldn't get into. In through the out went into it's cover and stayed there, hated it. Journey??? Seriously have you seen my picture?
@SlackerSlayer I was 4 years old in 1980 but heard so much rock music in my house (thanks to my mother, may she Rest In Peace) at that time that it was in its resurrection. The Wall became the top selling rock album in US history (Led Zeppelin IV eventually caught up with The Wall). Nice pic. Some have said I'm helplessly trapped in prog rock/hard rock circa 1977, I say "great time for rock and roll".
in heaven have the betters shows ever bonzo on drums hendrix guitars vocals 3 awesome morrison janis and mercury elvis and jackson like dancers do i miss someone?
Don't get me wrong, I love Neil Peart. But him replacing Bonham would be like swapping tires on a motocross bike and a street racing bike. Sure, you'll still be in the race and reach the finish line. But it wouldn't be as good of a ride.
On a less related note, does anybody know where I can find that clip of Jason playing drums when he was around 4 or 5? I just cannot find it anywhere. That little clip used to crack me up (when he'd twirl his sticks and such).
I just saw Robert Plant in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park at the Hardly Stricly Bluegrass Festival. What a show! I took a video from up on the hill where the acoustics were great! "Ramble On" was my favorite song that day!
I've always been more of a Deep Purple fan and love Ian Paice's "swing" drumming, but Bonzo was something else entirely. An absolute legend who could never have been replaced, no matter how good Cozy Powell (another great loss many years later) and others were. Bonzo was truly a special case!
i'm about a decade younger than the Zepplin members and got lucky enought to see them in Houston TX 2nd row center, 1976! . John Bonham's work is timeless, his Moby Dick solo stands way above numerous other great drummers! Miss you BONZO! LED ZEPPLIN or the Gods of Rock!
hes a fucken drummer for christs sakes, there are 100s of possible replacements for any drummer, its not like when Jim morrison of the Doors died, the band was fucked for sure !
@ronnied828 Heh! You dunno much, do ya. Because on the contrary, it's a lot like that. You can't replace John Bonham in Led Zeppelin any more than you you can replace Jim Morrison in The Doors.
But unlike the The Doors, every single member of Led Zeppelin, bar none, was vital and intrigal to the whole, so that includes John Bonham, so shutup, eh.
@gmj2012 because they only give you 3 pics to choose from to make the thumbnail, and out of the 3, that one was the best because the others aren't as good.
@acidinurmind Thanks for the response, yeah you are right, plus Plant was featured in the video too, so it makes sense. Thanks for the upload & info. I'm somewhere in the middle about the drummer being too unique to replace, I wish they had gone on with a new drummer, but also understand how hard it may have been for them to mentally accept someone else in his place--it wasn't about the music for them, but about their brotherhood like friendship.
Does anyone know which gig that was around 4:20 where all four of them were sitting in a row? I would love to watch the whole thing so yeah if you know the date, location etc... :)
One part of me would have been curious to see Zeppelin carry on but all in all, I do believe they made the right choice. And I seriously doubt anyone they might have tried to replace Bonzo with could have stood the comparison they surely would have received, for any length of time.
Can somebody verify this? One of my friends told me that Bonham got in a car accident or something where they found his arms 30 feet apart from his body or something like that. I have never heard this story until he told me. Is this true??
@munchy14 That's what I told him!!! He said no, it was the drummer from Led Zeppelin...and then after that everybody laughed at me. I'll show em!!! Haha
Bonzo was Roberts closest friend in the band, when Roberts son died Bonzo and Richard Cole (tour manager) were the only ones from the band that were at the funeral. jimmy and jonesy werent there :(
@JinnyJean1971 its on i tunes, its about 6 bucks its called "A to Zeppelin: The Unauthorized Story of Led Zeppelin" id email it to you but its off itunes, so youd need my password :/
well he died doing what he liked, drinking and dringing and drinking so lets say he drunk himself to death. cared nothing about his family or anyone just himself so i say good riddance.
Great Drummer and missed, like "Mick Tucker" (The Sweet Drummer) who was up there with John and Cosy & Buddy & Krupa .. such greats and never forgotten .. all as good as eachover but in their own way :) RIP .
Very bad stuff. People do not realize that alcohol is a powerful neuro-toxin. They don't realize that you can already be a dead man while you're still pounding them down.
I have lost several friends to alcohol that died way too young.
@snotra You, my friend, are what I call a troll. Trolls are obnoxious. I want to kick trolls in the face. If you don't like the band, then don't watch the video. Idiot.
@Snotra sloppy guitar player who has a sound that fits the band. pitchy singer at his worst, incredible at his best. Out of the world incredible drummer and one of the great bassists. The rhythm section are truly the best part of the band and they're phenomenal
@tornmask totally agree with you about Hendrix, Janis, and John Henry, but jacko? He was a little kid with a bit of talent until he went totally mad after thriller, never liked him, never rated him, I cried like a baby when I heard about Bonzo dying, Jacko? Wouldn't even have pissed on him if he was on fire
-Do bands like Zeppelin, Floyd, The Doors, Hendrix and the Who give you chills? Are you physically attracted to seeking truth in music? Well I am formally inviting you to take a listen to my channel, relax and let you ears fully enjoy my sound. I would love it if you took the time, they wont leave you disapointed. And in case if you end up liking it, your subscribtion to my channel will help me in changing the world with my music. Much Love.
the difference between Led Zeppelin and The Who, after Bonzo died, they were done because they were SMART! they couldn't go on anymore. The Who? the picked up some other kid, ZEPPELIN FOR LIFE!
@xXaggiesXx23: The Who couldn't afford to break up after Keith Moon's death, you dolt. And for you to call their replacement "some kid" proves how little you know about rock music.
@tomthefunky ha ha i like how i have 2 thumbs up and you have none on that comment and what the fuck is wrong with you? i know a hell of a-lot about rock music. all i play on drums is Bonham.
so go away Bonham hater and bow down the the sico Moon who is really not a great drummer. fuck off

Very bad stuff. People do not realize that alcohol is a powerful neuro-toxin. They don't realize that you can already be a dead man while you're still pounding them down.
I have lost several friends to alcohol that died way too young.

Slopy guitar player, pitchy singer, okay rock drummer, and boring bass player. Truly over rated band.

Wouldn't even have pissed on him if he was on fire

the difference between Led Zeppelin and The Who, after Bonzo died, they were done because they were SMART! they couldn't go on anymore. The Who? the picked up some other kid, ZEPPELIN FOR LIFE!
xXaggiesXx23 9 months ago 2
@xXaggiesXx23: The Who couldn't afford to break up after Keith Moon's death, you dolt. And for you to call their replacement "some kid" proves how little you know about rock music.
tomthefunky 9 months ago
@tomthefunky ha ha i like how i have 2 thumbs up and you have none on that comment and what the fuck is wrong with you? i know a hell of a-lot about rock music. all i play on drums is Bonham.
so go away Bonham hater and bow down the the sico Moon who is really not a great drummer. fuck off
