and p.s train them all you like but they have selective hearing and the hunter instinct is bred into them so as soon as they sight anything that takes there fancy ..............well ye better get yer running shoes on lol

Can you help me? We were planning on getting a Cairn puppy this week. I spoke with some local breeders and they claim if we dont have a fenced in yard then we shouldnt have a Cairn. Is this true? I have four kids that will keep this puppy busy and take it for walks, is that enough outside action or will the Cairn's be unhappy without being able to run free in the yard?
I have a Cairn, got him at 8 weeks old and I live in an apartment with no balcony. He's fully house trained, and goes for 2 walks each day. Fine being left on his own, so with 4 kids he'll be worn out!!! Enjoy your puppy!
@maureenfp13 Do you have someone who lives with you or are you by yourself? I've wanted a Cairn for some time now, and I'm worried about leaving him/her alone while I'm at work.
@canadarocks420 Hey there! I live by myself and have done since I got my Cairn. I think its important (if you can) to get your Cairn as young as possible, so that he doesn't have time to get used to any other scenario. I work full time and he's fine by himself - I asked my neighbours if they could hear any barking or fretting and they said no. When I collected him from the breeder, she gave me a towel that she'd rubbed all over his mother so he had a smell around him that was familiar.
@canadarocks420 The very day I bought him home, I practised leaving for 10, 20, 30 mins and then longer to let him know that I would always come back. It's important to really leave and not just stand outside because he'll smell you and think it's just a game!
Plenty of toys and cuddles when you get home, and no huge goodbyes when you leave. Making a whole production out of it, just stresses both of you.
Long story short, getting my Cairn was the best decision I ever made - go for it!!
@theivory1 we have one and we dont have a fence but we trained him and show him how far out he can go wthout getting sprayed with water so now we let him out and he stays where he needs to stay they are great dogs u just have to show them your the boss
my cairn terrier wont sit down shes hyper and i can never get her to focus! she wont let you train her. she caught on to giving kisses and peeing out side and on the peepads but wont sit or anything.
@iloveterriers thats because she dont know who boss i hold ours down when she acts up or i bite the back of her neck to show ours im the dominance one
thanks you so much for the vid and can anyone tell me is a puppy mill bad because i now a pet shop that sells dogs from puppy mills and not sure if i should buy one there
@VictorTranVlogs yes they are bad at puppy mills they breed the mother until she dies alot of the time they dont do the breeding prosses (sp) the way they are supposed to. and buying from a puppy mill isnt gunna help.

It's not so much that it's selfish, it's just the wrong breed for a working person. He's right about the establishing authority, they are stubborn!!

My Cairn has always had an aggressive streak; bad breeding I think. She is aggressive to anyone and everyone, especially other dogs.

But at the same time she is very loving with family and has been a wonderful pet otherwise. :)t

Totally normal! So was my Cairn - kitten in the house, absolute psycho on the street. Only age mellowed her. RIP...
