This is lovely. Actually, Studer would have been nearly perfect for this role from a vocal standpoint. She wouldn't have had problems riding over the orchestra, and yet could also sound young and innocent. It's singing like this I miss from the current leading sopranos.
"Un bel di" has been in Studer's concert repertoire for many many years. Agree that she would have been a wonderful Butterfly and, in fact, has been offered the role. Evidently nothing came of it. As for the fame issue, considering what passes for fame these days, it's not a bad thing after all.....
I had no idea she had ever sung this aria! Studer would actually have been a wonderful Butterfly vocally, with her combination of Wagnerian power and that pure, virginal sound. It's too bad she fell from fame so quickly. It's obvious that she got over that supposed vocal crisis and turned in some fine performances later.
I had to recreate and reupload this track, first uploaded yesterday, since something got corrupted causing it not to be indexed, thus not showing in search results.
1:05-1:10 The most beautiful moment of the aria in my opinion.
