One of the best if not the best, songwriters ever. His voice gives creadence to his songs as if all that he's written he's expeianced. Not unlike Willie and Kris.
To think of the many meanings that these lyrics can inspire.....God bless you Gordon. You truely have made this planet a better place to live..Play on......
Life is fleeting for us all, and having Gordon Lightfoot in my life has enriched the experience for me, help make it sweeter. I have lost those who matter to me, and the thought of losing Gordon is already affecting me, lifes bitter sweet journey that must end. I'm one of the lucky ones.
@usatennispro agree with your feelings on him. ive met the man twice after concerts. the thought of losinghim. when GOD forbid his time is up. that will be rough forhis family, his children, and his fans too
@buffey As was I. I also just discovered that Red Shea, who would have been playing lead guitar on this incredible recording, died of pancreatic cancer in 2008. I hate hearing that such amazing talent has left the world.
@buffey aye. i had seen gordon in concert in march. carter lancaster was playing. i imss terry deeply. i got home that night and made a tribute video to him
I've loved him from the first time I heard him.. and after living in Nova Scotia, I understood him even more.. I guess some 40 yrs now.. he is as good as it gets
Yiou WERE lucky as hell to wind up in San Fran during the Summer of Love.....ooooh, I'm JEALOUS.....wish I could have been there, too...yes, Gordon is a man after and before his time...a living legend of one of the 'old storytellers' and balladeers....some of his music puts us right back in those old days, some songs break your heart and make you weep...no matter what, he reaches into your heart and soul and strikes the chords there.....we love you, Gordon....
gordon, this is my all time favorite song ... I love country, bluegrass and anything acoustic and this song has always been my most requested , loved song!!! Thankyou!!!!!
This really is a great song by: Gordon Lightfoot.. my friend Larry first introduce me to this song back in the mid 80's... and this has always been one of my favorite songs by: Gordon Lightfoot.. he is a fantastic musician and songwriter!
For me, Gordon Lightfoot is the quintessential troubadour. I've never been so moved emotionally as with him. His lyrics, his distinctive haunting vibrato, and how he breathes life and emotion into his songs separates him from all other singers. I heard him (at 70) sing Bitter Green over a noisy audience, and I broke down and cried like a baby. Unbelievable !! Gordon, you are STILL the man.
@usatennispro i did too many timesi still do when i watch teh videos here. and the ones ive made for him as well. was done as a fan, and to show how much his music and personality means to me
He is one of the greatest poet, songwriter, singer, voice, I have ever known. I love you, thanks for emotions you make me feel everytime I dream with your music...
I hate it when somebody says to me "oh, I wouldnt expect your age to be listening to Gordon Lightfoot." It doesnt matter how old his songs are, they are all just amazing. I am 17 and I am proud to be a Gordon Lightfoot fan!!!!
@cooldude23407 I agree, No one is too old or young to enjoy and love the music of Gordon Lightfoot.
in fifth grade I sang a Gordon Lightfoot song at a talent show and I basically grew up with his music.I hear the same stuff in my college classes and my question to them is...Do you listen to Gordon Lightfoot? His songs are timeless and he is a legend. Long live Lightfoot!
the story is the meat and the melody is the potatoes... but the heart is the soul in this wonderfully crafted song.... it begins and ends with the story. it begins and ends alsobecause of one of the greatest song writers who ever lived..... Thanks Gord!
I feel the same way exactly!! I remember listening to the Canadian Railway Trilogy on the radio around 1968 and being completely and utterly entranced!!! In my opinion Gordon was as great a song-writer and performer as Joni Mitchell - right up there with the VERY best. With his distinctive voice, intricate guitar playing and his amazing story-telling abilities he has brought joy to a great many people - i can never hear one of his songs without smiling!!
I've always been a Lightfoot fan, but this song has only recently grown on me. It's hard not to get a lump in the throat at the line: "And to an old forgotten soldier/The dawn will come no more..." Pure poetry.
@TahoeLegend still is. i dont care what anybody says. ive been a fan since 95. would have been earlier but i was too ignorant to know fine music such as his.
I'm 34 years old and my Dad has had me listening to Gordo since I was 7-8. This song never really caught on but it is one of my favorites. Lightfoot's songs always have a way of putting the images of the story in my head! This one is no exception.
Hard to beleive he'll be 74 Nov 17, 2012. Been going to his concerts at Massey Hall in Toronto since 1969.

Very sentimental song by Gord and delivered perfectly. Lightly with an almost wistful voice. One of Gord's best.

If you get the chance, try to listen to the George Hamilton IV version - its really good too. :-) Its on 'Canadian Pacific' - last track, side two.

I first heard Gordon Lightfoot in San Francisco during the Summer Of Love and I have loved his music ever since.
A truly great songwriter, singer and guitar player.
This song has always been one of my favorites. I don't know how a guy as young as he was then had the wisdom to write a song like this one.
He was handsome as a movie star in those days.
I was lucky as hell to wind up in San Francisco during The Summer Of Love, and I was lucky as hell to discover his music.
