This was a protest song against the war in VIET NAM. It was sang to then President Johnson to tell him to bring our men homeand end the War in South East Asia. .
This song was originally recorded in 1969 by a Canadian group call The Original Caste. Coven recorded in 1971 And since Richard Nixon was elected president in November 1968 it is unlikely that even if President Johnson had heard the song before leaving office in January 1969 that he would have any influence on the war in Vietnam.
dear god, please let me awake an empty german beer bottle worth more than what i see in the mirror. sincerely, the bottle of WW2 bacardi which you hate
BTW, since people are wandering off topic the references to religion to this song are not because the song is anti-religion. It's because of the people (from any religion) that use religion as a justification to go to war. God allows free will. That's why he allowed slavery, and war and killing and all the bad things that happen - people make bad choices, God has little if anything to do with that.
you guys are dumb. this song isn't anti war. it's pro-espionage. "make sure your intel is correct before you go killing people. that and it's about the importance of not being a vauge douche. those mountain peope kind of deserved it.
@astrochiken The mountain people did NOT deserve it even bad people dont deserve death. Though u r kind of missing the point. IT's not all about "making sure your intel is correct before u go killing people"
this is the lullaby i sang to my children, slowed down to half time... and the message peace has stayed with them.... for this is all about peace, and how correct behavior and kindness benefit us all...
violenceand killing and war ARE ALWAYS THE WORST IDEAS! especially when people wanna try to disguise with with religion or "God's will" God does not take sides in wars and He never has. God doesn't consider one race over another regardless of what a priest, rabbi, televangelist or any other "person of God" tells you.
@sTapleEVA Why did God allow slavery? God allows all good and bad things that happens every day. It's frustrating as hell how He handles things. also, inherently, people know that slavery is wrong they just choose to justify it by saying "in the name of God".
@sTapleEVA that may be true but i'm not one of those gullible people who believe everything in the bible is true. Especially when it's written by men, NOT GOD. Slavery isn't cool regardless and if anyone thinks it's quite alright to own another person needs to have their head examined. And if God thinks that slavery isn't a bad thing, well, HE needs to have his head examined.
@PheremoneJ the bible says you must not disagree with your god! looks like your sinning! and if there was a god, he wouldnt let his instruction manual get altered!
I was around when this song was written, and it was another bad time in our history, War, Greed, Religious differences.(basically how it is right now). The song is saying that if god told you to do it it's ok "do it in the name of heaven, you'll be justified in the end" So many people have been killed for , land, religion, race, creed. It means we all need to put aside our differences and try and live in Peace. Or the Irony of our story will be the same. One tin soldier walks away in the end.
I think this video is not about killing other people just because they have something you think you need but you really don't. The valley people were just so over come with greed because they thought the treasure was gold but real treasure is peace on Earth and Love.
my mom has a VERY old recording by a band called billy thundercloud and the chieftains ... and tho' this version is very good, theirs is the one i like the most; unfortunately, i can't find a copy of this record (it never made it to cassette, much less cd) anywhere
i always thought this song was about people like Fred Phelps that do all these horrible things in the name of God, when the actual message of Jesus was love for everyone without exception.
@GreenThumbMomma I agree. These crazy freaks like Fred Phelps (and his family) are the real reason for the downfall of our country. It is a real shame that these people of hate are allowed to spread evil in the name of GOD. They are evil. This is a great song. People should realllly listen to it.

@clubhouseme It's different because Jinx Dawson, the lead singer of the band Coven, actually recorded two different versions of the song. The first was recorded for the original release of the movie, 'Billy Jack'. She recorded it with a studion orchestra, but insisted the recording bear the credit of her band, Coven, and not her as a solo artist. She re-recorded the song a couple of years later, when 'Billy Jack' was re-released on an international scale.

Is this a horse race? Whoever wins is a better ppl? In that case the USA is in what seventh place and the Arabs states dont even bother!!! The scientist wasnt killed by Israelis unless you have earthshattering news. DO YOU???
The Israels wnt there to help ppl. The Arabs didnt bother. Maybe Norway ought to send empathy squads to Arab states LOL
Youre hila-r-r-r-rious!!! If he was a shitty shot what is a good shot? Yes maybe he imagined all sorts of skewed impressions like you exhibit here. You seem to have Holocaust Envy. Be careful what you wish for.
The Odin Museum for the Perfect Race LOL What has this perfect race done so far?? Are they in Haiti?? Ha!!!
Thers more than one Jew doing Ponzis. Name one. The banks are Anglo Saxoned owned. You consciousness is a little above MUD, Wrestling with an angel is a metaphor not a soap opera,
Lobotomies werent used in Jew haters, Youre confused thats a univerasally known NAZI trait. Well threatening Jews all the time kinda makes you the terrorist. All you have to do is act. Like the nutjob at the Holocaust museum.
Its not my second account. You assume much. Idiots assume. Stalking anti-semites? How do you stalk Jew haters??? Assuming Madoff is typically Jewish shows up you racist gene.
When the Jews chose 1 God in a time of many they considered themselves chosen. They chose. Capiche??
Ith the part about "with our brothers we will share" as it talked about the tresure, I always had the impression that the kingdom people were saying that they would share the riches and the secrets with the valley-men.... Yet the cartoon dictates otherwise....
I think ...nvm.... well you either get it or you never will... Fuck a neighbor kill a friend do it in the name of $ or god ..yep
Ok I WILL Explain : MONEY and RELIGION and POLITICS are BAD they are tools to give man dominion over another man. Falling for it has been popular for thousands of years.
This animated version, for some reason, brings the tear to my eye. Truly awesome and a definitive rock song in its love, peace, and rebellion against war. It isn't anti-religion, it is against those who disgrace religion
This song should have nothing to do with race, religion, or gender. The message it sends to the world means all people are neighbours and friends and should live in peace with each other. Instead of saying well, this country has this amount of violence for this amount of time, you should think of how to help your country be at peace with others.
@TheRoughriderFan Its not saying any of that, its saying fools are always in pursit of foolish conquest. People are willing to kill eachother for race, religion, all kinds of foolishness. Its a message of peace, yes the problem is only few wise people will understand this and so these idiots that are not wise are doomed to chase after nothing. And nothing. And nothing. And nothing forever. The means people use to justify their crusade will lead them to chase nothing.
Anyone know where I can download this particular version of this song? itunes has the other version by Coven, but this version is my favorite. Thanks!
Prolly not the first to post this ( Im too lazy to look at previous posts). I know that this is metaphors and what not but... how the hell did a "peaceful" kingdom become a kingdom. If they can be overthrown by a bunch of plebeians how did they come to power. Do they have like twelve sodiers in there army or something? Also, Who the fuck protects a rock? They hid the son-of-a-bitch just to make the villagers think they have some treasure so that they know their status. That is kinda evil.
Ever hear of Tibet? Seems they were a peaceful mountain kingdom that had little to offer but wisdom, and China invaded them. So the song is a lot more relevant than you might think.
I hate to piss off the Dali Lama, but his constant preaching of peace doesn't achieve much. He who has the guns, and the will to use them usually triumphs.
Actually, Tibet was historically part of China. The whole continent has been historically presided by the Imperial Government (dynastic-eras). However, the turbulent internal strife and invasion by the West cause a bitter split between states. Although the weak and corrupted Qing Dynasty plays a huge part too. So, it is historically correct for China to proclaim Tibet a part of China. Ok, so the Communist Government made a lot of mistakes. But the fact still remains: Tibet is part of China.
The Chinese Communist Government made some mistakes? HMM murder, waging an agressive war, and the oppresion of the people of Tibet are simply mistakes in your veiw? Nice moral compass there pal.
The Qing daynasty wasn't the only corrupt dynasty, almost all of the dynasties were corrupt. The life of the average Chinese peasant was one of back breaking work, and living in fear of the corrupt local officials. Using you example, could England still claim India as part of England?
'Coven' didn't write this song they just covered it (adding nothing new). The original was only two years old when Coven re-did their almost identical cover.
Eckhart Tolle is being treated just like the King in this song. Everyone who receives the GOLD of his teachings are like the Mountian People. And everone who hates his teachings are like the Valley People. They send their message of hate up the hill to good people like Oprah. But Oprah says we will gladly share this GOLD with you. Eckhart Tolle says all religions can enter the NOW. But that angers the Valley people and they draw their swords to kill us. Eckharts teaching only say PEACE ON EARTH
I have no problem of Tolle's teachings. It's a free country (until Obama finds a way to change that) and Mr Tolle can spout whatever drivel pleases him. I think what people object to is Oprah's apparent attempt to diefy Mr. Tolle. The Oprah also alienated a lot of Christians by rejecting the tenants of Christianity on her show.
Tolle's teachings are irrelevant because they ignore the simple truth of mankind's existence. There is good, and there is evil. There are predators, and prey.
Chances are that there are good deal of folks in the Muslim world that would wholeheartedly agree with the message of this song/video. No, wait, I lived there for over eight years and, believe it or not, not everyone is as easily sucked into hate as you are. Even people living in the "Muslim" world. I often wonder if folks like you realize that you are the exact mirror of those nefarious "evil" Muslims that hate America.
What part of the Muslim world did you live in? Everywhere I went in the muslim world I found hatred for the Jews. I found the oppresion of women. I found that non-muslim minorities living in muslim countries were treated as second class citizens. Non-muslims have almost no standing in muslim courts.
I myself have met a syrian farmer or two. When they're in their cups (apparently Allah can't them imbibe alchohol indoors) they say "If you help us get rid of Israel we would like your country."
By in large, the people I've met in the middle east are as good and kind as anyone here is the US. To quote one Syrian farmer; "We love Americans, but we hate the American government" Not without reason. How would you feel if your roles were reversed? If a foreign Muslim power came in and liberated a state in the US, perhaps your own. Wouldn't you be outraged? Please, just think about it for five minutes if you can. Lord, even for thirty seconds would be a blessing.
I'm outraged by the Muslim countries terrorizing Israel since 1948. I'm also outraged by Muslims going into other countries and scaring the citizens into making their countries more like the Middle East. I've met people from Muslim countries, and Islam in not a religion of peace.
I also disagree with the way some Muslim governments have behaved towards Israel. Christianity's past isn't exactly spotless when it comes to the forcible converting of other people. I just wanted to address the fact that not everyone that lives in those Muslim Nations agrees with what their governments are doing. There are a lot of people that do disagree, yet there's an image of Muslim people that seems ingrained in the American consciousness in which they are all extremists baying for blood.
Really? Really? Geeze fellah you have to reach pretty far back to find Christians trying to convert people by forcible means. Christianity has often been used as a convenient excuse to mask the real motivations of despotic rulers. The teachings of Christianity are diametrically opposed to "forcibly converting" people.
The same cannot be said for Islam. Islam was a movement born in violence and it has never evolved. If you doubt me read the Quran for youself, and study Islamic history.
Reply to BloodyHypocrite, 'They' may not hate North American's just the Bush administration. Well I don't hate Arab's per se... I do hate their savage and oppressive theology, and their non-secular monarchies.
Ah, but we have a choice in who we elect. That isn't really the case in some places over there, now is it? My whole point on this thread was to remind some people that a good deal of arab people DON'T agree with their governments. I'm extremely grateful that the majority of americans don't agree with the savage and oppressive theology that some in the US espouse. Thank god that we have that freedom.
Don't thank god, thank 'us'; our progressive civilization. (Here) we have revolutions to 'change' regimes we don't like. Over there they have civil wars to 'maintain' regimes they don't like. Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for backwards peoples who fail to separate religion and politics (halting their advancement for over a millennium). Hopefully someday they can take responsibility for themselves and start contributing to world innovations rather than coming here to emulate our achievements .

All before ERIC the REDS SON.

FEW truly understand this.
God I hate religion.
DEATHnHATRED 2 years ago
This animated version, for some reason, brings the tear to my eye. Truly awesome and a definitive rock song in its love, peace, and rebellion against war. It isn't anti-religion, it is against those who disgrace religion
drystyx 2 years ago
This song should have nothing to do with race, religion, or gender. The message it sends to the world means all people are neighbours and friends and should live in peace with each other. Instead of saying well, this country has this amount of violence for this amount of time, you should think of how to help your country be at peace with others.
TheRoughriderFan 2 years ago 24
@TheRoughriderFan Its not saying any of that, its saying fools are always in pursit of foolish conquest. People are willing to kill eachother for race, religion, all kinds of foolishness. Its a message of peace, yes the problem is only few wise people will understand this and so these idiots that are not wise are doomed to chase after nothing. And nothing. And nothing. And nothing forever. The means people use to justify their crusade will lead them to chase nothing.

ringocrowley666 2 years ago

Grimmest117 2 years ago
Actually, Tibet was historically part of China. The whole continent has been historically presided by the Imperial Government (dynastic-eras). However, the turbulent internal strife and invasion by the West cause a bitter split between states. Although the weak and corrupted Qing Dynasty plays a huge part too. So, it is historically correct for China to proclaim Tibet a part of China. Ok, so the Communist Government made a lot of mistakes. But the fact still remains: Tibet is part of China.
broadcastian 2 years ago
The Chinese Communist Government made some mistakes? HMM murder, waging an agressive war, and the oppresion of the people of Tibet are simply mistakes in your veiw? Nice moral compass there pal.
The Qing daynasty wasn't the only corrupt dynasty, almost all of the dynasties were corrupt. The life of the average Chinese peasant was one of back breaking work, and living in fear of the corrupt local officials. Using you example, could England still claim India as part of England?

No one wants peace as much as the warrior, who has to fight in the war and sees the cost up close and personal

I wouldn't say that's an absolute truth.

TheGnosticbuddhist 2 years ago
I have no problem of Tolle's teachings. It's a free country (until Obama finds a way to change that) and Mr Tolle can spout whatever drivel pleases him. I think what people object to is Oprah's apparent attempt to diefy Mr. Tolle. The Oprah also alienated a lot of Christians by rejecting the tenants of Christianity on her show.
Tolle's teachings are irrelevant because they ignore the simple truth of mankind's existence. There is good, and there is evil. There are predators, and prey.

Amen Dude, great point!
Canichenoir 2 years ago 3
Chances are that there are good deal of folks in the Muslim world that would wholeheartedly agree with the message of this song/video. No, wait, I lived there for over eight years and, believe it or not, not everyone is as easily sucked into hate as you are. Even people living in the "Muslim" world. I often wonder if folks like you realize that you are the exact mirror of those nefarious "evil" Muslims that hate America.
BloodyHypocrite 2 years ago
What part of the Muslim world did you live in? Everywhere I went in the muslim world I found hatred for the Jews. I found the oppresion of women. I found that non-muslim minorities living in muslim countries were treated as second class citizens. Non-muslims have almost no standing in muslim courts.
I myself have met a syrian farmer or two. When they're in their cups (apparently Allah can't them imbibe alchohol indoors) they say "If you help us get rid of Israel we would like your country."
Grimmest117 2 years ago
By in large, the people I've met in the middle east are as good and kind as anyone here is the US. To quote one Syrian farmer; "We love Americans, but we hate the American government" Not without reason. How would you feel if your roles were reversed? If a foreign Muslim power came in and liberated a state in the US, perhaps your own. Wouldn't you be outraged? Please, just think about it for five minutes if you can. Lord, even for thirty seconds would be a blessing.
BloodyHypocrite 2 years ago
I'm outraged by the Muslim countries terrorizing Israel since 1948. I'm also outraged by Muslims going into other countries and scaring the citizens into making their countries more like the Middle East. I've met people from Muslim countries, and Islam in not a religion of peace.
revacohen 2 years ago
I also disagree with the way some Muslim governments have behaved towards Israel. Christianity's past isn't exactly spotless when it comes to the forcible converting of other people. I just wanted to address the fact that not everyone that lives in those Muslim Nations agrees with what their governments are doing. There are a lot of people that do disagree, yet there's an image of Muslim people that seems ingrained in the American consciousness in which they are all extremists baying for blood.
BloodyHypocrite 2 years ago
Really?
Grimmest117 2 years ago
Reply to BloodyHypocrite, 'They' may not hate North American's just the Bush administration. Well I don't hate Arab's per se... I do hate their savage and oppressive theology, and their non-secular monarchies.
So I guess we're all the same at heart.
Jmehix 2 years ago
Ah, but we have a choice in who we elect. That isn't really the case in some places over there, now is it? My whole point on this thread was to remind some people that a good deal of arab people DON'T agree with their governments. I'm extremely grateful that the majority of americans don't agree with the savage and oppressive theology that some in the US espouse. Thank god that we have that freedom.
BloodyHypocrite 2 years ago
Don't thank god, thank 'us'; our progressive civilization. (Here) we have revolutions to 'change' regimes we don't like. Over there they have civil wars to 'maintain' regimes they don't like. Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for backwards peoples who fail to separate religion and politics (halting their advancement for over a millennium). Hopefully someday they can take responsibility for themselves and start contributing to world innovations rather than coming here to emulate our achievements .
