A word about the pay... in many parts of the country paramedics make pretty substandard wages for the level of training and responsibility they have. That being said, in the SF bay area and a few other areas, the pay isn't half bad. People attribute this to the cost of living in these places but even taking that into consideration it really is better money by any standard.
emts scope of practice differ state to state. in tennessee one emt and one paramedic ride in the truck. "emt iv"s can do a ptl or combi tube and administer iv epi but can't shock. must use aed. but tennessee is getting rid of emt iv and going to basic, intermediate, and advanced
@pool741 Paramedic is a level of EMT. They are EMT-Paramedic. The minimum level of EMT to ride in the meat truck are EMT-basic. Paramedic is the highest level of EMT.
@Jezza446 ya that's what i said they are paramedics no way an emt is allowed to use a manual defibrillator and intubate. also i have seen the movie its really a great film i would recommend it if you have not already seen it.
EMS has a life expectancy of about 4 to 5 years average.
Anyone who does it longer than that...Large coffee on me.
If you can't stomach gruesome scenes or large open wounds...Work at Starbucks. EMS=Free
I did my four and this scene reminds me of a guy I worked on.
The wife was there watching us try to bring back her 82 year old husband.
I remember how cold he was through my gloves, how his skin moved around like chicken skin and the feel/sound of the ribs as they cracked during compressions.
There is a reason why we got a high burnout rate. Its stressfull and WE LOVE IT. The majority of us will admit all EMTS are not normal. We wake up at 4am for someone we dont know on their worst possible day ever. And we love it. I would also like to note our sick sense of humor. (Another reason I love this movie). Peace and Keep safe yall.
After 8 years of being an EMT I can officially say I've had it. I can hear sirens and the screams in my sleep...it ain't even funny. If anyone here is thinking of this field you better be ready for an intense ride while you make close to nothing and you will suffer with both physical and mental stress.
they are paramedics
-i have seen the movie

@WolfyJ the pay is a big reason to, the only way you will not get burned out is if you really love it, well thats what i have encountered so far.
