I don't understand top offs, when you top off does that mean you fill the tank up with freshwater up to the point where you see the water has evaporated?
that shrimp juice stuff is actually good for micro-life in liverock and stuff like tubeworms etc. It helps populate liverock bacteria too and corals actually eat it too.
@JUNAID187 that is true however it also feeds algae growth and beginners already have enough issues with algae so it is wise to do everything you can to prevent an outbreak.
you guys actually made on mistake at the end sometimes or most of the time the algae will eat all the phosphate so when u test it it test no phosphate because the algae is eating it faster than the strip can detect it.
Do any professionals know what I'm dealing with? The following video is my channel/video so please feel free to comment there. I need help to rid them. /watch?v=NXiEvQuiPa8
I'd like to know the price of each item(s) as you introduce them in the videos. The videos are instructive but the a very important thing to know is what is all this going to cost.
im sorry but to me ur just putting to much shit it the tank its self you should have just started with a drilled tank to save ur self money and it doesn't look like you have a bunch of shit in the way of seeing ur fish and or corals
@Teslasdik Point of the series is to start the easiest possible tank and show some of the common progressions. Adding the sump will be part of a episode in the very near future. Part of the reason we didn’t to it sooner is because we wanted to show the advantages of getting all that stuff off the back of the tank and into a sump. When the series is complete a new reefer will be able to watch the whole thing and decide for themselves where they would like to start in the process.
@pmrossetti1 That is true to a point however it is around a 1” pipe with a very little flow going through it. While possible it would be rare for a snail to clog it so completely that this small amount of water couldn’t still pass through. That said it is thinking like yours that will insure you avoid a vast majority of problems in this hobby : )

All your videos have been very helpful to me. I think this series is great as it answers so many questions for someone wanting to start a salt tank. I think it also may be helpful to go into a little more detail on acclimation of different corals, clams, fish, shrimp etc and the differences of acclimation from online with O2 in the bag to a local fish store.
@567234ta We would like to go into more detail on a lot of these things but frankly some of the episodes are already running over 13 minutes long , before ya know it you would be watching 30 minutes of Reid and I. What we would like to do when this series is done is go back over it and dedicate complete episodes to the things that need to be covered in more depth.

Ohh ok cool, lookin forward to next update, and great vids btw, very very informational & helpful for saltwater noobs like myself. I think im going to start my first SW tank as a fowlr.
Great videos but is all this stuff neccessary? It seems like it is becoming ALOT to have to keep up with. You guys are running out of room to hang stuff on the tank!
@NuttinSpeciaI Only things that are absolutely necessary are the aquarium, rock, heater, pumps and a good water change schedule. Everything else just makes things easier and increases the chances of long term success. All of this stuff can be kind of daunting but starting and maintaining a reef tank can be as simple or hard as you want to make it.
I'm thinking of setting up a new reef tank, and found this series here on U Tube. In watching just the first three videos I've learned so much. Thanks guys, you rock!!
@PapoBoom the refugium light should come on at night when the main tank lights are not on. This will help stabilize the PH swings at night. Notice that I say help because it wont completely stop the ph from dropping unless you had a very large fuge.
@edgar57639 There are lots of ways to set up a fuge. My primary goal for this one is copepod production and I personally find the combination of rubble and chaetomorpha algae ("key-toe-morph-a") to work well. It’s also easy to clean and maintenance when I need to. I doubt a deep sand bed would be effective this small. While its possible miracle mud may work I tend to stay away from products with miracle claims in general. That product’s packaging has a lot of “miracle claims”
This is a great series i just got a 55gal tank today I plan on making my first saltwater. With a 55gal cantainer for a sump filled about 2/3 full.I have three very successful fresh water tanks and want to move on to something much more colorful and appealing. I'am wondering about sand tho, I saw a guy using pool filter media for aquaium sand. would this allow bio bacteria growth as the cost seems very appealing compared to live sand at my LFS?
@anynamenotused Thanks for all the kind words. I am afraid I have never used pool filter media for sand so my advice here is not of much value. This is one of those things that would always be in the back of my mind of I ever had issues down the road and relatively difficult to remove completely. I would probably skip it unless you personally know someone who has had long term success using it and you trust them.
@joeymac119 Point is to show the common progression many reefers take and explain these common pieces of equipment. You can have a successful saltwater aquarium with just the equipment from episode 1 and a really good water change schedule. It wouldn’t be a very exciting series if we left it at that : )
Very good video guys! Helped out a lot was very infomative. Vids like these are what keep and start good saltwater tanks!

big flaw in those hob fuges though. if the return to the display gets blocked, like by a snail, it will overflow on the floor, no?
it should be freeflow out like an Aquaclear hob filter.
