I think she's phenomenal, and it's okay that she's white because she's only singing it in a concert. She's not trying to be Sarah, she's just performing the song. If she was trying to be Sarah in Ragtime, it'd be different. There are some shows that can be pulled off with "color-blind" casting. Ragtime isn't because it has such a huge emphasis on race in the show itself.
She sings well but doesn't convey the emotions well enough. Maybe I just prefer some parts a little slower, it seems like they rushed through a little too much.
why does it matter at all whether shes doing show. shes portraying a black woman as many black woman portray a white in a show and as a Asian woman would portray any ppl she desires. that's what singing and acting are for too portray another person or ppls while putting your own twist on itby saying this woman cant do this is both rude and impeccably stupid.
@MsOperalover1 She's not portraying a black woman. She's not even portraying Sarah. She's portraying a character of her own. That is new and interesting in its own way.
i dont like the opera type singing but she did ok but i did not feel it i felt as if she acting the song out instead of real emotion, and color has nothing to do with it.
@blackstersherron opera type singing? have you not seen the show or know how its written or anything to do with the voice and what notes the voice breaks? i dont mean to be rude but this isnt the show...just a concert and audra macdonald who originated this role...(black) is an OPERA singer
amazing! it does not matter whether you're black, white, gray, purpple! this song has universal meaning! it is the story of a broekn-hearted and regretful parent who despises their actions and asks their child for forgiveness. sing hun!
She almost sounds angry, which is not exaaaactly the mood of this song.lol.. She has an amazingly powerful voice though. But still, I don't think she did this song justice.
@JNO91 from an actor's viewpoint, it's all about your connection to the song, right? Her acting is beautiful!
The only time you need to connect to the song in a CERTAIN way is within the context of the show, but I agree in the sense that the show version is WAAAY better.
This didn't evoke any type of emotion out of me. She's extremely talented, but I think she forgot the message of the song. When Audra sang it, I cried. With this, I wanted to back away a little bit. Her race has nothing to do with it, she's talented, however there are times to belt...and that's not with this song.
arguably australia's best belter? god she's amazing!! i LOVE this version of the song!!! she sang at the rob guest endowment the other day - super pregnant, but could still get this sort of sound out! awesome x
@nubianreadhead - I would actually argue that this was *not* written for a classically trained mezzo - the original Broadway recording is sung in a very similar style, including belting, vowels sung as they would be spoken, etc. I think Amanda does a fantastic job with this song, especially for an Aussie singing a very American character.
i don't see how it matters what color her skin is. wouldn't it be racism to say she couldn't sing it because she's white? yeah. a white woman could feel the same emotions... you don't have to be black to feel this way or to be in the same situation.
This could be amazing if she were singing her vowels correctly. This song was written for a classicly trained mezzo and she is singing very bright. She is singing the song how she would speak it. Her coach needs to be fired for not instructing her how to sing this piece. This is not to take away from her voice because that is obviously awesome but it does sound amature
@nubiandreadhead She's Aussie...their idea of proper English singing may be different from Canadian, English, Scottish, American, Irish, and Welsh vowel concepts. And she's singing with a rounded but forward tone...just because she's singing forward does not mean that she's singing this brightly.
Whether you believe this was written for an African American performer or not, she did a LOVELY job. Yes the show is about African Americans fighting for their rights at the turn of the century so on stage the actress playing Sarah would be black, but it is truely written for a voice that could supply the power to sing this beautifully.
I hate to say it but I'm with InsaneSnowman, this is a song written for a black women. Amanda Harrison has a beautiful voice, but she doesn't capture the feeling the song requires. Most songs are multi racial but this song is for a black women.
So what if it was written for a black woman. Amanda sounds amazing singing it. Shows how much you, InsaneSnowman, know about muscial theatre. The main point of the song, as to why it was written, is for a powerful singer to sing it.
This song is so well written that beautiful voices can be passionate even without much expression, but Amanda still does it. Obviously, Ragtime's version uses a black woman, but it's not unheard of for people to sing this in concert form to be any race. She's got so much passion and expression...you get to see the range of emotions she conveys in that area of sadness-anger-fear.
So incredible, I know she is probably not right for the part, but this is not the show it is a concert and she was Amazing! And is amazing, best Elphaba ever.
Hmm..i have heard the OBC, and no doubt, I love that version too. But I love Amanda's belt a lot more than Audra's version. No doubt, they are both spectacular!
I totally love her! Everything she does is amazing. So yes, this was a brilliant performance by Amanda. If you can't see the emotion she puts into this song, then your eyes and ears arn't open. Amanda, you're gorgeous x.

She has a beautiful voice but she doesn't have the character to back it up......Think about it......the character is a single black woman formally pregnant in late 1800-early 1900 America. Freedom for African-Americans was very new and they only had friends in eachother. Now I ask you....Was her performance still brilliant?
@ScreenName its very simple, most African Americans have a specific tone quality which allows them to sing certain songs in ways that most white people cannot. This song was written for a powerful black person to sing, and Amanda fails to capture the same spirit in which it was originally written. While her voice is certainly decent, look at the original and see what I mean.
@Swabby88 It IS very simple. Musical theatre doesn't belong solely to the person who sang it first. There's ALWAYS something different about people who sing it next. No one is Kristen Chenoweth, and woe to the actress who just tries to imitate her while singing Galinda. On the other hand, everyone brings something new and fresh. If the listener keeps an open mind and judges it based on THIS person's passion and sound, then the listener can hear something new.
@Swabby88 The reason I think this song is okay to do colorblind is because the action that lead up to it has nothing to do with Sarah's race. This song is about being abandoned, and that's really universal. Also, Audra MacDonald doesn't have a typical "black" tone to her voice. She's a legit soprano.

Seeing this in a week and I am now suitably way too excited. She's got a GORGEOUS voice and she's way beautiful as well :) Can't WAIT to see her Elphaba; I've heard she's giving stellar performances and I can totally believe the reviews.
She's not from Perth is she (I know Lucy is). Whats really strange is that she looks *so* much like a girl that was in my year at school, whose last name is also Harrison. Its uncanny.
there was a concert that i went to and the girl that sang this sounds exactly like her...and she got so into it after her solo they had to send her into the hall so she could cool off
this is fabulous! you have such a lovely voice. i sing this song too and id love to sing it with an orchestra and a stage like that. That is definitly my aim.
i do think that maybe it wud be better if u emhasised he word anger and blood a bit more but im just bein picky now! u were amazing!
thats not the poster singing, its actually an aussie musical theatre legend - amanda harrison, wholl be playing Elphaba in the Melbourne Production of Wicked
I love Amanda and Lucy's voices and although it's a shame he won't have more singing, am excited about seeing Anthony Callea as Boq. I think it's going to be a wonderful production.
She's going to be so amazing as Elphie! :D Haha, even though I've seen Wicked LA three times, I really want to fly to Melbourne to see Lucy and Amanda... If only I had the money...
Haha, well, Willemijn and Lucy are definitely one of my favorite Oz teams, but I already might get to see them because I have a friend in Switzerland who wants to take me. It would be difficult for me to get to Melbourne, though, because I don't have any connections there. :(
its from ragtime. the woman has just had a baby, and the father left her, not knowing she was pregnant. she was so upset that she left the baby in a garden (possibly buried), where it was found and taken in by a rich lady. she now has the baby again, and she sings this lullaby to him.
Wow, i'm impressed! I'm a huge fan of wicked, but have only ever seen tht awesome kerry ellis as Elphie in the UK. I'm seeing the Oz version in july, and was worried the aussie elphie wouldn't live up to my expectations, but now i can't wait!
definitely tag this with wicked somewhere! hahahaha, so many ozonians out there are missing out on this sneak peek at what our elphie will look like. Im seeing wicked on july 23rd and flying across the country for it, lol. 4th row... figured its close enough for specky up close things and far enough away to see the whole stage. yay
An absolutely brilliant performer, For years I said she was the ONLY choice for Elphaba and I am so relieved and elated that they chose her. She deserves it and will be a world-class Elphaba.
absolutely gorgeous. Whenever I hear this song I cry.

Seeing this in a week and I am now suitably way too excited. She's got a GORGEOUS voice and she's way beautiful as well :) Can't WAIT to see her Elphaba; I've heard she's giving stellar performances and I can totally believe the reviews.

She's the most perfect Elphie, for sure.
Loved every second of her songs.

She's not from Perth is she (I know Lucy is). Whats really strange is that she looks *so* much like a girl that was in my year at school, whose last name is also Harrison. Its uncanny.

Naaa I think she's a Sydney-sider

She's amazing. She's going to be a wonderful Elphaba. And I really like this song.

there was a concert that i went to and the girl that sang this sounds exactly like her...and she got so into it after her solo they had to send her into the hall so she could cool off

this is fabulous! you have such a lovely voice. i sing this song too and id love to sing it with an orchestra and a stage like that. That is definitly my aim.

thats not the poster singing, its actually an aussie musical theatre legend - amanda harrison, wholl be playing Elphaba in the Melbourne Production of Wicked
brentyboi4eva 3 years ago
I love Amanda and Lucy's voices and although it's a shame he won't have more singing, am excited about seeing Anthony Callea as Boq. I think it's going to be a wonderful production.

She's going to be so amazing as Elphie! :D Haha, even though I've seen Wicked LA three times, I really want to fly to Melbourne to see Lucy and Amanda... If only I had the money...
SunDevilGirl11 3 years ago
No, it's Stuttgart that's got the best cast!
TheChosenOne613 3 years ago
Haha, well, Willemijn and Lucy are definitely one of my favorite Oz teams, but I already might get to see them because I have a friend in Switzerland who wants to take me. It would be difficult for me to get to Melbourne, though, because I don't have any connections there. :(

LUCKY!

im fascinated by this song... whats it out of?? and whats the storyline leading up to it??

its from ragtime. the woman has just had a baby, and the father left her, not knowing she was pregnant. she was so upset that she left the baby in a garden (possibly buried), where it was found and taken in by a rich lady. she now has the baby again, and she sings this lullaby to him.

oh, good story.
thanx

Wow, i'm impressed! I'm a huge fan of wicked, but have only ever seen tht awesome kerry ellis as Elphie in the UK. I'm seeing the Oz version in july, and was worried the aussie elphie wouldn't live up to my expectations, but now i can't wait!
linziadwd 3 years ago 2
definitely tag this with wicked somewhere! hahahaha, so many ozonians out there are missing out on this sneak peek at what our elphie will look like. Im seeing wicked on july 23rd and flying across the country for it, lol. 4th row... figured its close enough for specky up close things and far enough away to see the whole stage. yay

wow. she sounded so australian. (I'm sure I don't sound that Australian), her voice is amazing! I can't wiat to see her live as Elphaba

An absolutely brilliant performer, For years I said she was the ONLY choice for Elphaba and I am so relieved and elated that they chose her. She deserves it and will be a world-class Elphaba.
Circusfreak 4 years ago 12
this is COMPLETELY phenomenal !
she is going to make an amazing elphaba.
maybe you should put wicked tags in the tags section, so this comes up in all those searches!!!
