  • absolutely gorgeous. Whenever I hear this song I cry.

  • I think she's phenomenal, and it's okay that she's white because she's only singing it in a concert. She's not trying to be Sarah, she's just performing the song. If she was trying to be Sarah in Ragtime, it'd be different. There are some shows that can be pulled off with "color-blind" casting. Ragtime isn't because it has such a huge emphasis on race in the show itself.

  • The stupid black/white argument is especially valid when the musical is written by Jewish authors LOL

  • the song is emotional enough but this is the first time i watched someone actually perform it. where the hell did i leave my tissues!!

  • She sings well but doesn't convey the emotions well enough. Maybe I just prefer some parts a little slower, it seems like they rushed through a little too much.

  • Amanda, just amazing! I heard you sing this song at that competition. You should have one....hands down! Loved you in Anything Goes....great job.

  • and i just cried. amazing.

  • okay this really is a dumb and pointless argument... coming from a black female in theatre. it needs to just end, she sings great. case closed.

  • well ik it doesnt matter but. There are way less black women potraying white women in shows.

  • why does it matter at all whether shes doing show. shes portraying a black woman as many black woman portray a white in a show and as a Asian woman would portray any ppl she desires. that's what singing and acting are for too portray another person or ppls while putting your own twist on itby saying this woman cant do this is both rude and impeccably stupid.

  • @MsOperalover1 She's not portraying a black woman. She's not even portraying Sarah. She's portraying a character of her own. That is new and interesting in its own way.

  • probably the best version i've heard

  • u cant evun hate on her... amazing.. shes white! who cares? i was black and i played jack in into the woods who cares!

  • i dont like the opera type singing but she did ok but i did not feel it i felt as if she acting the song out instead of real emotion, and color has nothing to do with it.

  • @blackstersherron opera type singing? have you not seen the show or know how its written or anything to do with the voice and what notes the voice breaks? i dont mean to be rude but this isnt the show...just a concert and audra macdonald who originated this role...(black) is an OPERA singer

  • @gmooreheadiv Yes i dont like opera singers hate the music but with that said she lacked emotion on this song, dont matter black or white.

  • @gmooreheadiv check out Khadijah Rolle singing this song you can feel the emotion when she sings, the best i heard to sing this song.

  • Chills.

  • That is pure class, her singing is incredible and her acting is astonishing. No matter what colour skin she has, she does this song justice.

  • amazing! it does not matter whether you're black, white, gray, purpple! this song has universal meaning! it is the story of a broekn-hearted and regretful parent who despises their actions and asks their child for forgiveness. sing hun!

  • amazing :]

  • fantastic :)

  • She almost sounds angry, which is not exaaaactly the mood of this song.lol.. She has an amazingly powerful voice though. But still, I don't think she did this song justice.

  • @JNO91 from an actor's viewpoint, it's all about your connection to the song, right? Her acting is beautiful!

The only time you need to connect to the song in a CERTAIN way is within the context of the show, but I agree in the sense that the show version is WAAAY better.

  • This didn't evoke any type of emotion out of me. She's extremely talented, but I think she forgot the message of the song. When Audra sang it, I cried. With this, I wanted to back away a little bit. Her race has nothing to do with it, she's talented, however there are times to belt...and that's not with this song.

  • @heyyoubitme

    Thank u.

  • Wow... she is fantastic!

  • Gorgeous performance...not fair to compare to Audra...

Terrific voice, after her baby, I hope she returns to musical theater, would be a loss of a great talent.

  • arguably australia's best belter? god she's amazing!! i LOVE this version of the song!!! she sang at the rob guest endowment the other day - super pregnant, but could still get this sort of sound out! awesome x

  • @catiecop what did she sing? jealous :P

  • i love this. SING ON!

  • you guys should listen to audra mcdonald! no offense but audra mcdonald is way better

  • I love this girl. Shes just brilliant!

  • She belted most of this- very different from Audra.

  • @Marie0Maybe Yeah becuz Audra Sang it haha :) Sang the hell out of it!

  • @nubianreadhead - I would actually argue that this was *not* written for a classically trained mezzo - the original Broadway recording is sung in a very similar style, including belting, vowels sung as they would be spoken, etc. I think Amanda does a fantastic job with this song, especially for an Aussie singing a very American character.

  • i don't see how it matters what color her skin is. wouldn't it be racism to say she couldn't sing it because she's white? yeah. a white woman could feel the same emotions... you don't have to be black to feel this way or to be in the same situation.

  • this woman is bloody ridiculously talented

  • There is no race to music... the notes are black on a page of white. That's the only color there is. This whole argument is LUDICROUS!

  • wow - -ppl should see her in this - she proves point blank that shes so much more than just elphie <3

  • This could be amazing if she were singing her vowels correctly. This song was written for a classicly trained mezzo and she is singing very bright. She is singing the song how she would speak it. Her coach needs to be fired for not instructing her how to sing this piece. This is not to take away from her voice because that is obviously awesome but it does sound amature

  • What are you on about? How rediculous and how wrong can you get?

  • @nubiandreadhead I agree. especially on the longer notes.

this classical musical theater, it demands a classical sound.

  • @nubiandreadhead She's Aussie...their idea of proper English singing may be different from Canadian, English, Scottish, American, Irish, and Welsh vowel concepts. And she's singing with a rounded but forward tone...just because she's singing forward does not mean that she's singing this brightly.

  • Let's just take race out of this. "Your Daddy's Son" was written for AUDRA! This is AUDRA'S song. This girl was fantastic. But...it's audra's.

  • songs are mainly how their preformed not who sings them if it has the right emotion needed then its perfect and she did the right amount

  • Whether you believe this was written for an African American performer or not, she did a LOVELY job. Yes the show is about African Americans fighting for their rights at the turn of the century so on stage the actress playing Sarah would be black, but it is truely written for a voice that could supply the power to sing this beautifully.

  • I hate to say it but I'm with InsaneSnowman, this is a song written for a black women. Amanda Harrison has a beautiful voice, but she doesn't capture the feeling the song requires. Most songs are multi racial but this song is for a black women.

  • So what if it was written for a black woman. Amanda sounds amazing singing it. Shows how much you, InsaneSnowman, know about muscial theatre. The main point of the song, as to why it was written, is for a powerful singer to sing it.

  • This song was written for a black woman, and it should be kept that way. She sounds so caucasian its almost painful.

  • @InsaneSnowman how can u sound caucasian?

  • Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahha..... Bahahahahahaha

  • Bahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah..... hahahaha...hehehe..haha.heheh. . . . Bahahahahahahahahaha. dumb bitch.

  • alien indeed

  • she's so beautiful and she has a beautiful voice!

  • amanda is fantastic. enough said.

  • Her teeth are distracting. But her performance was great!

  • This song is so well written that beautiful voices can be passionate even without much expression, but Amanda still does it. Obviously, Ragtime's version uses a black woman, but it's not unheard of for people to sing this in concert form to be any race. She's got so much passion and expression...you get to see the range of emotions she conveys in that area of sadness-anger-fear.

  • does anyone know what she came?

  • i sit back applaud and say fanatstic at the end of any performance amanda does, every time without fail she takes my breath away

  • UGH SOOOO GOOD

  • So incredible, I know she is probably not right for the part, but this is not the show it is a concert and she was Amazing! And is amazing, best Elphaba ever.

  • Great amount of passion. The actual voice itself is ok. Overall, a very good performance.

  • Wow. That was...wow. She's got such an incredible voice, absolutely brilliant.

  • I love hearing different voices with songs. Especially people who are ethnically different, it's a very nice contrast to the original.

  • you guys obviously havent heard the OBC.. with Audra McDonald..

THAT is amazing. yes this Amanda person is really really good but shes NOTHING compared to Audra :D

  • Hmm..i have heard the OBC, and no doubt, I love that version too. But I love Amanda's belt a lot more than Audra's version. No doubt, they are both spectacular!

  • she has a beautiful voice.. with passion yes.. as for soul...

I <3 this show sooo much

  • Amazing!!! She is an amazing performer.

  • you're voice is awesome... but your voice... it has no soul if that makes sense.. it's too "pretty"

  • I'm going to contradict that by saying she has a ton of passion in her voice.

  • seconded!! shes amazing~

  • are you kidding? this video almost makes me cry.. she is so amazing!

sorry to contradict but she has soul to burn.

  • I looooooove this song. I tear up every time I hear it...this musical is MOVING

  • What show is this from?

  • Ragtime

  • Aw, she's so cute and young here.

  • (Damn hit the comment button too soon)Though she doesn't look much older now! Brilliant as always.

  • I'm singing this in my school's spring concert ... I could not be more happy. This song gives me chills...absolutely beautiful.

  • what's the meaning of this song? Is it about a dead child? or a dying child? or is it just alive?

    can somebody help me?

    thanks

  • the father of her child left her before the child's birth. she doesn't know what she's doing, and she buries her live child

  • She buried her child alive?

    Dramatic.

  • the baby lives.

  • No, the baby lives.

You obviously don't know the show. lol.

  • see the musical, it clears it all up a ton!! plus its just an awesome show

  • I agree amanda is awsome

Luv her, she puts so much emotion into her preformances

I don't know why you think she doesn't

    she is brilliant

  • was this a competition?

  • wow she has an amazing alto

and yet can belt defying gravity, shes truly a star!!!!

  • this song goes to an f. this is not an alto song

  • i never said it was an alto song!!!

but she uses her alto voice at certain points, i have actually sung this song myself:P

  • She's amazing, have now seen her in wicked twice and met her both times :D Haha

  • this is one of my favourite songs from a musical.. so powerful!

  • Beautiful job!

  • I totally love her! Everything she does is amazing. So yes, this was a brilliant performance by Amanda. If you can't see the emotion she puts into this song, then your eyes and ears arn't open. Amanda, you're gorgeous x.

  • shit no i mean her actual child- she has a one year old son but i wanna know his name

  • she has a daughter grace

  • whats her sons name?

  • She has a beautiful voice but she doesn't have the character to back it up......Think about it......the character is a single black woman formally pregnant in late 1800-early 1900 America. Freedom for African-Americans was very new and they only had friends in eachother. Now I ask you....Was her performance still brilliant?

  • Comment removed

  • umm... was she doing the show? no. so why does it matter what color she is?

  • @ScreenName its very simple, most African Americans have a specific tone quality which allows them to sing certain songs in ways that most white people cannot. This song was written for a powerful black person to sing, and Amanda fails to capture the same spirit in which it was originally written. While her voice is certainly decent, look at the original and see what I mean.

  • @Swabby88 It IS very simple. Musical theatre doesn't belong solely to the person who sang it first. There's ALWAYS something different about people who sing it next. No one is Kristen Chenoweth, and woe to the actress who just tries to imitate her while singing Galinda. On the other hand, everyone brings something new and fresh. If the listener keeps an open mind and judges it based on THIS person's passion and sound, then the listener can hear something new.

  • @Swabby88 The reason I think this song is okay to do colorblind is because the action that lead up to it has nothing to do with Sarah's race. This song is about being abandoned, and that's really universal. Also, Audra MacDonald doesn't have a typical "black" tone to her voice. She's a legit soprano.

  • i met her last night xD

    shes freaking brilliant!!!!!!!

  • Nice voice, but, Audra KILLED this song!

  • Great voice but this is not a song for you.

  • I find it non inspiring. it doesn't have the same soul as it does when tracy sang it. there is no emotion and her voice is lifeless

  • this was pretty but I still love Audra McDonald on this song... it was made for her voice, but Amanda did a good job too

  • AMANDA HARRISON WHAT AN AMAZING FIGURE IN THE LIVES OF SO MANY.

she is my sole idol and her voice and enthusiasm encourages my ability to perform as an amazing being within the world.

i love her to bits she is amazing.

    especially live !

    LOVE YOU AMANDA !!

  • WOW

  • That was *speechless expression, mouth agape* ...FANTASTIC!

  • Good, but i thought when she sang "Berried." it was alittle off.

  • tempo was funky but pitch was fine

  • the pitch is fine, but i just think its alittle funny.

  • Hhahah must be the Australian accent =P We tend to say things a tad differently =P hahaha (But I swear... you Americans pronounce things strangely! *grins* Hhahhaha)

  • Maybe. All accents sound diff', you pronouse words right/wrong. I do it all the time when i'm doing all diff' accents.

  • so she's about to bury her child in this song or she's burried her child? why would she bury her child?

  • because she was "crazy from the fright..." so she wasn't really in her right mind you know?

  • sure! This is from the musical Ragtime and the woman's singing about her housband who If I'm not mistaken was murdered because he was black...someone please correct me if I'm wrong, and so she's singing about her husband and her baby

  • I think that's later -- here, she's had a relationship with a musician who was unfaithful. She leaves and conceals her pregnancy from everyone, burying her child in the ground because she can't confront the memories of his father.

  • so the baby died, or she buried it alive??

  • She buried him alive, but someone finds him.

  • can anyone tell me which musical this is from, and what it's about? i THINK i know, but, i might be wrong... isn't she excellent?

    -sigh- idol? yes!

  • ragtime

  • honestly I didn't expect such a voice to come from someone that tiny! AMAZING!

  • This is awesome. Thank you for posting.

  • OMG goosebumps!! She is amazing!!!

  • Yesss same, saw her on the 16th of July. Loved her to death.

  • *rasied eyebrow* saw her in wicked on july the 16th? no You did'nt you saw the understudy Jemma, i was there that, in a tux

  • I saw it at 1pm, I know the understudy was on at 7pm, two of my friends saw it then.

    x

  • She sounds absolutely amazing singing this song!!

  • omg omg

  • She's not from Perth is she (I know Lucy is). Whats really strange is that she looks *so* much like a girl that was in my year at school, whose last name is also Harrison. Its uncanny.

  • Naaa I think she's a Sydney-sider

  • She's amazing. She's going to be a wonderful Elphaba. And I really like this song.

  • fantastic. what a beautiful voice

  • fantastic. what a beautiful voice

  • there was a concert that i went to and the girl that sang this sounds exactly like her...and she got so into it after her solo they had to send her into the hall so she could cool off

  • this is fabulous! you have such a lovely voice. i sing this song too and id love to sing it with an orchestra and a stage like that. That is definitly my aim.

i do think that maybe it wud be better if u emhasised he word anger and blood a bit more but im just bein picky now! u were amazing!

  • thats not the poster singing, its actually an aussie musical theatre legend - amanda harrison, wholl be playing Elphaba in the Melbourne Production of Wicked

  • I love Amanda and Lucy's voices and although it's a shame he won't have more singing, am excited about seeing Anthony Callea as Boq. I think it's going to be a wonderful production.

  • She's going to be so amazing as Elphie! :D Haha, even though I've seen Wicked LA three times, I really want to fly to Melbourne to see Lucy and Amanda... If only I had the money...

  • No, it's Stuttgart that's got the best cast!

  • Haha, well, Willemijn and Lucy are definitely one of my favorite Oz teams, but I already might get to see them because I have a friend in Switzerland who wants to take me. It would be difficult for me to get to Melbourne, though, because I don't have any connections there. :(

  • LUCKY!

  • Wicked Melbourne was amazing! =D (Thank goodness, I actually live in Aus..though not Melbourne =.= hmph.)

  • im fascinated by this song... whats it out of?? and whats the storyline leading up to it??

  • its from ragtime. the woman has just had a baby, and the father left her, not knowing she was pregnant. she was so upset that she left the baby in a garden (possibly buried), where it was found and taken in by a rich lady. she now has the baby again, and she sings this lullaby to him.

  • oh, good story.

    thanx

  • Wow, i'm impressed! I'm a huge fan of wicked, but have only ever seen tht awesome kerry ellis as Elphie in the UK. I'm seeing the Oz version in july, and was worried the aussie elphie wouldn't live up to my expectations, but now i can't wait!

  • definitely tag this with wicked somewhere! hahahaha, so many ozonians out there are missing out on this sneak peek at what our elphie will look like. Im seeing wicked on july 23rd and flying across the country for it, lol. 4th row... figured its close enough for specky up close things and far enough away to see the whole stage. yay

  • wow. she sounded so australian. (I'm sure I don't sound that Australian), her voice is amazing! I can't wiat to see her live as Elphaba

  • She is soo amazing.

Can't wait to see her as Elphie :D

  • An absolutely brilliant performer, For years I said she was the ONLY choice for Elphaba and I am so relieved and elated that they chose her. She deserves it and will be a world-class Elphaba.

  • this is COMPLETELY phenomenal !

she is going to make an amazing elphaba.

maybe you should put wicked tags in the tags section, so this comes up in all those searches!!!
