There was a huge difference between Nirvana Live when Kurt was strung out and high (and goofing off) and when they were "trying." Watch them play HollyWood Rockfest and compare that to MTV Live and Loud. Absolutely, hands down, they played better in front of television cameras when it was time to get "serious" than they did in other concerts.

On this version, neither Kurt or Dave is even singing. Both could have handled it, but instead they've got the bassist up there jagging around.

Cobain's ideologies were far from perfect, I think that's obvious. Doing junky covers of songs was a representation of Cobain's cynical sense of humor, in my opinion. The fact that they goofed around on stage a lot of the time was to separate themselves from the machismo of metal bands.
