Sir Lord Baltimore are a pioneering American heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968 by lead vocalist/drummer John Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra, and bass player Gary Justin. They are most notable for the fact that a 1971 review of their debut record, Kingdom Come, contained the first documented use of the term "heavy metal" to refer to a style of music.[1] Additionally, Sir Lord Baltimore featured a drumming lead singer, traditionally a rarity in rock and metal music.[2]
I like how with this music there is no argument, it's infallible, and only everyone agree that it's untouchable, whereas on the other hand with all of the Thrash and whatnot, if you look at the comments, all you see is "METALLICA IS BETTRZ!" and "THERE ARE MORE PEEPLZ IN SLIPKNOT SO THERE KEWLER!"
It might have something to do with the fact that Metallica and Slipknot fans are in many cases, clueless kids..... or that many underground Thrash fans still can't really accept that the mainstream will never care for the bands that aren't part of the Big 4 and are always saying "I think these bands should be on the Big 4 instead of ___".... who gives a fuck really! SLB is great. No need to argue about it! hahaha! :)
Likewise vinto34, I love finding bands I should have heard of, but haven't! :)
My reflex Wiki scan says that these guys inspired a news journalist with the term "heavy metal", which is not to say that they were the first to play heavy metal.
holydiver73, trust me, you have to give John Garner some time to grow on you. If you like early metal, YOU MUST...I repeat...YOU MUST get this album and their self-titled follow up. You can still find the two-fer CD on Amazon and E-Bay. You won't believe this stuff came out in 1970/1971. I know John Garner personally, he's a friend of mine on My Space. Check out "Hard Rain Fallin'" too, that's another massively heavy one!
yeah i bought this album in 74 as a cutout and was totally blown away! their manager was dee anthony of humble pie and peter frampton fame. they really should have done better. as is they are a cult band of great status. thanks you tube
This is a band that wolfmother really sounds like, not sabbath or zep. You geezers out there should checkem out.BTW love this shit, them lesser knowns of ther earlt 70s.
Man, i only discovered these guys like a week ago after reading a Classic Rock article featuring heavy metal as the theme. Got Kingdom Come and self titled. brilliant i must say. I actually wrote to Garner after i found there website and he wrote back!~
They were definitley a hard rocking band for there day. I luckily have both there albums on vinly and cd. They are avaiable you just have to look in the right place.
Hey, I don't know "love"'s version of Hey Joe, but now that you mention it, the bass line is extremely like "Hey Joe", it was going around in the '60's, then of course Hendrix did it, but now that you mention it, the bass line here is as you say...Good Ears!!
I first heard the term heavy metal in Steppenwolf's song "Born to be Wild" from 1968. HEAVY METAL THUNDER. Saw these guys at the Fillmore East in early '71 with the J. Geils Band and headliners Black Sabbath back when Ozzy was known as John Osbourne, his real name.
An older friend says in about 1971-72 he went to an outdoor rock fest with Black Sabbath, Sir Lord Baltimore, Cactus, Alice Cooper and I think the MC5. All the hippies were expecting to hear something mellow like the Dead and insted got ambushed by early heavy metal. Im not sure where and when it took place but it supposedly was a forerunner to the ozzfests we have now.
the reviewer in RS was metal mike saunders, who also called Sir Lord Baltimore a Heavy Metal band in the may 71 issue of creem (which someone references below). The Humble Pie usage was used as an insult and not to describe a genre of music, so it's fair to say SLB were the first band called heavy metal (but come on Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer, Sabbath, etc all came before them ...)
@beroth77 Yeah but Sabbath was putting out more volume and were generally better-known. Way back in the very very early days, SLB would be opening for Sabbath
check wikipedia: these guys ARE a heavy metal band and they were the first to use the term "heavy metal" about their music. Heavy metal wouldn't exist without these guys.
And goopwer, have you heard the CD I recommended in my other comment? Don't say these guys weren't a metal band. They happen to hold the distinct honor of being the first known band to have the words "heavy metal" appear in a review for their debut album! No joke! The review was from Creem magazine (ever heard of it...no?) in 1971 and it said, "This band seems to have every heavy metal trick in the book down pat."
Lets not forget Atomic Rooster "Death walks behind you" was as heavy as anything out at the time. Uriah Heep always gets over looked as well "Bird of Prey & Gypsy" were heavy as hell for 70.Sorry to say Sabbath didnt "create " heavy metal, many bands were working on the blue print.they just became the breakthrough
band.Just like Metallica& Slayer, dozens of bands were working on the blueprint for speed/thrash metal
Ok, I see a trend here with Sabbath fans that dosen't seem to exist with fans of Zeppelin. Sabbath fans, for some reason, will go to their death proclaiming they were the first metal band. You know things evolve from one to the other. In a sense Zeppelin AND Sabbath were both the first, Zeppelin started it and Sabbath added to it. Both sound different.
i seen sir lord at the filmore east with black sabbath in 1970 their first concert they blew sabbath off the stage ozzie was only 19 only a few know of sir lord baltimore
Mercury Records had some cool bands around about that same time--Organ Grinders, Buddy Miles Electric Church, Ancient Grease, Jack Ttanna's Genesis...etc.
Yeah the drummer did the vocals live. They were kicked off the stage during a show at The Whiskey because he always had a hard time keeping time on the drums between his playing like a nut and hitting the highs on vocals. He was an awesome drummer and singer in my oppinion and being a drummer myself I can see how he'd have a problem keeping in time doing all those fast fills while singing.
I'm with ya progrockman! I came to these guys in late 2005 at 28. I'm so glad I listened to those samples on Amazon! "Hard Rain Fallin," "Hellium Head," "Woman Tamer," some of the heaviest stuff I've ever heard from '70/'71. Rips my head off every time I put the CD on! Ya dig?
Oh wow...I see that four months ago you made a reply to my comment and I didn't even know it was here. OH ZEPPELIN AND SABBATH ROCK...no need to comment on that one but you've got to hear BOTH albums from these guys! You've gotta own some SLB along side the other "heavies" of the era...please do yourself the favor and you won't regret it!

How does an awesome band like this go unnoticed by the mainstream? Maybe their
songs are too long? Man from Manhattan's
at least 15mins. Far as I know they only
released 2 albums. Try to find them at
a record store..good luck man.
ZephyrZorlon79 4 years ago
They signed a bum contract. They don't get one red cent from the cd release which contains both albums.
As for Man from Manhattan.. weakest song of the album. The rest is killer. Manhattan could have used a little more revising to make it more epic.

The Steppenwolf reference is to bikes not music though ... right?
William Borroughs uses the term Heavy Metal a few times in early 60s books but that's in reference to drugs.
Chemists have used the term before there were electric instruments but I digress.
