Narrator: Still in 1949, the management of the most prestigious American Opera Theater MET invites the rising star to perform on its stage. This proposal meets the resistance of the cold war knights. The argument is: Cristoff is not welcome here, since he's Bulgarian citizen and stays on good terms with Russia. So, he was not allowed to enter USA... Later on, the American press admits: its a shame, that New York does not yet accept with honors the greatest bass, actor & singer of our times.
It will take six years before the furious public reaction takes over and Boris Christoff finally triumphs in USA!
In 1956, he performs the title role of Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" for the fist time in San Francisco Opera. After that, his art fascinates the audience of Pittsburgh, Chicago, New York...
The American press pours superlatives: "The voice of Christoff completely resembles this of Chaliapin rich, full, possessing a Slavonic nuances and finesse!"
Another newspaper exclaims: "His Godunov is a figure, which shakes the soul!"
just another example of my country's stupidity. The greatest Basso of our times! I never knew this what a disgrace!!
