Why do they not use straw today?, they must be 'put out' by it all nowadays these groundsmen, clubs should forfeit the match 1-0 if they don't get the game on.
The official gate against Man U was 47000,however some estimates went up to 70000. There was reports of two fatalities. No footage of the man u match is known to exist. If you see the famous photo of Charlie Hurley leading the team out its the match against Everton, their mascot, the toffee lady can be seen on the left. Both teams ran out to the tune of Z Cars
I reckon we got another 60000 in the next round against ManUre, which they only won after 2 replays. There were also about 40000 locked out of that one. Sadly I only started going in the 70s when 53000 was the biggest gate.
@lukegsafcftm straw that covered the pitch to stop the frost. It was cleared before the game and laid around the pitch . youung supporters used to sit in it and watch the game.
You forget just how big the Roker End was. Say what you like but modern stadia never generate an atmosphere like that. Those were the days, 1/- 6d in the boys end. Guaranteed 100% effort.

Straw. Used whenever there was severe frost. Remember, this was a Fifth Round game and likely held in early March.
