Howard wanted the music to be deep and dark, representing the dwarves. It had to be gruff. That's why the little boy isn't in it. His voice is too high for what Howard wanted to produce. He worked better in the Elvish stuff, where it was all high pitched and smooth.

Now think of this... It is possible that the Balrog was more powerful than Sauron. Sauron was merely the chief lieutenant and servant of Morgoth, and though he was higher in rank than even Gothmog, it is not directly said that he is more powerful... So... Interesting thought.

Ungloiant was more powerful than Melkor that time because of feeding from the Trees of Lightat their sources. She was at her peak while Melkor was normal/actual weaker than usual. At his fiercest no Balrog would dare question him; when he screamed like nothing had or would, a host of Balrogs arrived and easily drove off even an uber-charged Ung'

Sauron is in fact a fallen Maia. although A balrog could be stronger in pure power, a single 1 couldn't match up to Sauron. And especially not once he fused himself with the one ring, making himself that much more stronger
