I don't know it from being a close follower of her career. I just remember reading it somewhere. Or, I think, I saw a "best of" Janis album somewhere which had all three bands on it.
"Piece of My Heart" is a song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns and originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967. The song came to mainstream attention when Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company performed the song in 1968 on their album Cheap Thrills and had a hit with it. The song has since been remade by a vast array of singers, including hit versions by Faith Hill in 1994 and Beverley Knight in 2006.
Why? Why do "artists" feel compelled to do such things? Only rarely does a cover version top the original. History bears that out. Even the Beatles didn't always better the songs they covered in their early days. "Baby It's You" is the best example.

Just for the record...this is NOT Big Brother and The Holding Co. This is Kozmic Blues.

Right. Janis fronted 3 bands: Big Brother & The Holding Company, the Kozmic Blues Band, and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. I know, you already knew that.

Very interesting. Thx for sharing. I'm from the era but I don't remember that. Imagine that!

Faith Hill covered this song? How did she manage that? (Aside from obviously having poor judgment in her choice of songs to cover).

BADLY!!! Its on an album of Joplin, Morrison and Hendrix covers that includes such (FRIGHTENING!) gems as Devo doing "Are You Experianced".....
