The Boomerang does have gun ports for the .303 machine guns in the wings outboard of the 20mm Hispanos but the noise/howl is the Supercharger - a single-speed General Electric centrifugal type supercharger with a 7.15:1 reduction ratio (not a Turbocharger-that was the CA-14 only) of P&W R-1830 S3C4-G engine.
The Boomerang was powered by a supercharged Pratt and Whitney R-1830 engine. the Supercharger makes the scream. And it wasn't a piece of junk Although not a great fighter it was outstanding in the ground attack and target marking role. As for Aussies succeeding the list is long but in context how about the fact that the Australians were responsible for the first defeat on land the Japanese suffered in WWII? We forced them to withdraw at Kokoda and thoroughly defeated them at Milne Bay
The Wirraway was developed from the NA-16 and the Boomerang was developed from the Wirraway/NA-16. None of these aircraft had turbocharged engines. Only one Boomerang was used to test turbocharging and it did have a squared off tail. Checkout article in Flightpath magazine Vol22 number 2 (the latest edition).
desinged to be an intercepter but suited being ground support more lol still great plane made it to be one thing but turned out to be better at another
At the end of the day we dont hear f#@k all about the CAC Boomerang anywhere. I'm happy it's posted here and hoping it get's out that the Pacific theatre wasnt only P40s,Spitfires,Corsairs. They all played their part
So why did the bloke who owned and built the above aircraft say that it was the gun ports? Interesting. As far as I know the turbo/supercharged version of the boomerang had a squared off tail-plane....
What a great job they have done restoring the Boomerang. As a kid in the 70s in Oz I had a book about the RAAF by George Odgers (I think) which had a fair bit about it. It was very manoeverable, not so hot top speed wise (slower than a Hurricane) but was well armoured and had a good punch. Could not really be said to be near equal to the Zero, but a lot of our pilots lives were saved as it was as tough as old boots! And a pretty fair ground attacker later on. Great to see one still flying!!
are u sure because i know that only one was fitted with superchrger it didnt go into production becuase it put to much strain on the plane it's self not the engine
out of 250 there's few out there (not much can be said for the state of Beaufighters...) but i think it's the supercharged R-1830 that does it for me. Gives it a sound of it's own.
were NA-16' trainers also called Wirrawies? The Boomerang sucessfully protected Darwin until other fighters were made available to AAF. Booms were a decidedly nasty surprise to imperial Nippon.
It was built and flown within 16 weeks and was developed on the NA-16 trainer design. The heavily armed fighter in close support, worked effectily with the Corsairs of RNZAF to help defeat the Japanese in SWPA WW2.

I'm getting tired of people saying it's the gun ports making the whistling sound.
The Boomerang does not have a 'Blue-Note'!
it IS the supercharger fitted to the R-1830.
The sound is clear as day.
Stop saying it's the Gun Ports. The Boomerang doesn't have 'Ports.'
It has exposed barrels which would cancel any whistle out anyway.
Get your facts straight.

Apparently it had the highest rate of climb of any comparable fighter.

When the air is pushed over the wings and the .30 cal gunports it makes a whistle sound.

It the supercharger wot makes the whistling sound mate not the flamin' gun ports

It is amazing that in country that had hardly built a plane before could design and fly one within 16 weeks!
It shows what can be done in desperate times.
The Boomerang was a stop gap until Kittyhawks Spitfires and Mustangs became available. Around 250 were built

Odd how the main wing is appropriately boomerang shaped, and the tail end slopes up a bit like a kangaroo tail.
