Ahwahneee is from the Owens Valley Paiute Creation story so its not a Miwok word either.

Yosemite is a Spanish Loan use word and it is Oso meaning bear and methe meaning to kill, So when the white people asked what Tribe lived in the valley, they used this Spanish loan use word oso meate, hence bear killers. To say this was a Miwok word is a lie.

Ironic story about the name "Yosemite": in the language of the Ahwanechee indians, (their name for the park was "Ahwahnee") the word Yosemite means "people to be feared", referring to the Mariposa battalion, who came to exterminate all the original inhabitants. "Yosemite" means "they are killers". It's kind of crazy the park was given this name.
