I think you misunderstood me. I mean that everyone should pay the same per dollar, not the same set amount. For example, someone that earns $20,000 should pay $6000 and someone that earns $400,000 should pay $120,000. Everyone should pay $.30 on the dollar, or $.20 on the dollar. This country has corporations paying $.40 on the dollar when the average worker pays $.27 to $.32 on the dollar.
I personally disagree with a progressive tax, but it took me a while to realize that a flat tax was more fair than a poll tax-since rich people get more protection from the government (life, liberty, and more importantly property in this case) they should pay more. However, it is proportional to the extra protection which varies directly with income.

Even if you pay equal percentages, a rich person is putting more money towards taxes. The rich and the business owners also have more assets and the ability to affect the lively hood of others. Compare a business going bankrupt to one random person going bankrupt. The business will affect many people, so it takes priority of the single person.

Neither, a flat tax of say 1% (it could easily fund defenses in the UK). But any sort of progressive tax just makes the rich angry (they create the economy, but have to pay more).
My first concern with taxes would to switch away from an income tax with withholding and go towards a consumption tax (really anything else...). However, ideally I think an income tax should be flat, regardless of rate, which we both believe (I think) should be minimized.

I personally disagree with a progressive tax, but it took me a while to realize that a flat tax was more fair than a poll tax-since rich people get more protection from the government (life, liberty, and more importantly property in this case) they should pay more. However, it is proportional to the extra protection which varies directly with income.
(The government should have no bias towards livability if we have political equality)
