No to mention that in a live version of this song, played in 1969 (you can find it here on youtube) Ritchie was already playing lighting fast sweeping arpeggios, decades before the 80`s shredders...
@xuxis2008 The first sweep I ever heard was on the Song "April" I loved that rift towards the end of the song and he does it on the live version of Ring that neck so cool.
Fantastic playing from Blackers here, some lovely jazzy runs in amongst the rock playing. The version of Lazy on this album is stunning, if you havn't heard it YOU MUST!!
Great playing! ...Jimmy Who....Jeff What....Eric Where... None of his contemporaries could touch Blackmore! That's what made Deep Purple the supergroup that they were.
@repetitivemotion Tottally agree. While those who you quoted were playing only pentatonic scales, Ritchie was already playing modes, harmonic minor scales and sweeping arpeggios... things that would become regular in rock only 20 years later.
This is the version from the BBC live in concert series and is superb and the best. I used to have Deep Purple in Convert album released in 1980 with this version on it! Loved that album, Good to hear this again. You should post the all 18 minutes of the original.
Well, honestly said...you can copy anybody else. But, to copy Ritchie is impossible (ask Yngwie...). That's why Led Zep's were more famous than Deep Purple. You can easily copy Pagey....forget about Ritchie. He's unique. Better...he's the one!
Ritchie is God,,,it's a fact. He played sweeping licks, alternate picking,,scaplloped necks. His technique is unmatched. He also messed around with tapping. He must of invented POWER CHORDS for God sakes. He's done it all.
@RCstrats I know I just got into an argument with some kids on you tube who claim that Mark Tremonti from creed is the best guitarist, the obviously need to get out more often
Just too cool.. That was Ritchie at his absolute best.. It just doesn't get any better than that.. He can be real hot and cold.. and can be a colossal arrogant prick.. That being said.. He has been a huge influence for me as a guitar player. I remember finding this album in the " cut out " section of the record store years ago.. One of my fave's Great job..
Even if all together taken Page, Clapton, Santana or still who will play that a guitar on a scene and on the other hand this scene it will be simple to stand Ritchie Blackmore and will start to play as usually that it will simply take down all of them from this scene!
Bought this as import year it came out in usa. paid 18 bucks. best money ever spent on an album. wore it out and had to get another. collected wring that necks and mandrake roots ever since. Have everyone available.
Stockholm '70 is awesome too, but i love them all.
search google for "deep purple in concert 1970-1972". that's the name of the album.
and try listening to scandinavian nights also, which for me it's one of the sickest and hottest deep purple live recording ever (if you'll listen to speed king and child in time you'll see what i meant)
I found this double album by accident 7 years ago. Holy crap. What a great band Deep Purple (Mach 2) was!
I'm sorry, people who don't put Blackmore up on top with the mainstream all time best players (Paige, Beck, Hendrix, Clapton, et al) need to hear his best work to get it right. Then, taste being subjective or not, they would have to have rocks in their head not to be convinced of the absolute technical, classical, hard rock prowess of Ritchie Blackmore!
The reason is simple: the R&R HOF is an American thing. And much like soccer, Ritchie Blackmore, the best rock guitarist of all time and creator of some of the most memorable moments in rock history, has been systematically ignored for decades. The so called "classic rock" stations in America prefer to play i.e. The Eagles or Boston than ANY of Ritchie's impressive body of work. In the rest of the world DP and Rainbow would have been inducted to the HOF in the first night. Here they don't exist.
@benjy72 this solo is pure madness....and yes, he's playing his old red Gibson 335...at the time he was on fire and this feeling attitude lasted maybe until 1975/1976...then RB never played like that....
Yes and that short little guitar solo before this is even better

Sounds like his 335 on this (his usual weapon of choice for this song and that sounds like paf pickups!),brilliant tone!

This is from 1970-1972 in concert. In my opinion, it's better than Made In Japan.

@RCstrats Must have invented powerchord? Are you sure he was the only person who was trying to put a 5th and a 8th on the keynote? Come on.

Heavy pickup sound :) Ritchie is maybe the first to play some sweeping licks before hours. Very good live. Thks.

Whoops. I meant Mach 1&2. I believe this tune was in the Mach 1 (Simper) days.
Nonetheless...why TF isn't this band in the R&R HOF?!?!?!?! Blondie is there. Nothing against them but it's a joke they beat DP in. I mean come on.
jerry8802184 3 years ago
