Just because they used the same arguments is extremely irrelevant.
Interracial marriage was designed to keep races apart, which is a form of segregation, which is unconstitutional. Race is not a fundamental aspect of marriage, but gender is. Interracial marriage did not try to redefine marriage (unlike gay marriage). It means that males can marry females regardless of race, and THAT is a basic civil right.
Great video.. really well done.. I too am canadian and just wanna say that nothing changed when we legalized it.. the big thing that i think made it get huge support was that a clause was put in to protect churches that didn't want to perform gay marriages.. no churches were sued for turning away gay couples which makes sense to me.. government should stay out of gods house and god should stay out of the governments house
This was wonderful...and you're right, notloc28, I almost stopped watching it, but I got through. I love your message. My parents are lesbians, and without them, I would have grown up a foster child. It kills me that they don't have the right to marry each other when they are the two kindest, wisest, and most caring people I've ever met...please continue to spread your words of peace and tolerance...
Racial discrimination has no bearing on the fundamentals of marriage(the joining of a man and women in holy matrimony), since people of all races and colors have been participating in marriage long before interracial issues ever came into the picture.
The root of the problem is not protecting marriage, but that of governments who incorporated religious ceremonies into laws to begin with.
But... it doesn't seem as though marriage is the root of this problem either.
this is a really simple, well made movie. I would like to know a bit more about the making. I really like the style and how you present the message. It is simple, but VERY effective!!
Also, was there a reason for having a shortened version and a longer version?
The shortened version, we were told, might spread faster. Also, we noticed some points within the movie at which people were more likely to stop watching. We decided to remove as many of those parts as we could without sacrificing the overall message.
Nicely done! I've actually been looking for archive footage from opponents of interracial marriage to highlight the similarities to the present arguments against same sex marriage, but haven't had much luck. I know the videos exist, I just haven't been able to track them down. Any advice?
i actually did not find any videos of the kind you're looking for either (in creating this). instead, i mainly relied on old newspapers and court cases to find the quotations used.
I only saw this tonight, and while I already voted No on 8, I wanted to say thank you. One day I hope that I will meet the man I want to live my life with and then marry him. Thank you for trying to help the dream come true.
It was only in 1967 that all interracial marriage bans were struck down by the US Supreme Court--and the ideology that those same laws functioned by was the belief that people of color were unfit to be married with whites. It is deeply disappointing and frustrating to me that so many Americans are still in that style of thinking and belief and feel such a strong need to force it upon others. It's intolerance, simple as that.
Thanks so much for this. I had a professor read statements like this and we had to differentiate between whether they were against interracial or gay marriage. At the end she stated they were all against interracial marriage. No on 8!
I find it especially ironic that the Mormon church, which has had a most untraditional view of marriage, is the driving force behind Proposition 8 in California. The Yes on 8 ads have been filled with lies. And now we find that there have been blackmail letters sent to the No on 8 donors. All in the name of amending the state constitution to deny rights to others. Just say NO!
This isn't saying that the two are synonymous. It is highlighting the fact that many of the arguments used against interracial marriage are being used against gay marriage. Sorry, but it sounds like you're saying that both racism and homophobia aren't forms of discrimination.
It "isn't" anymore. On a biblical level, it once was and if you agree that only "certain" people should be able to marry you are corroborating that discrimination is acceptable. It is not, in any way shape or form.

Excellent! If you REALLY want to protect marriage, make divorce illegal. Peace.

I've been married for 35 years
to my best friend, lover, and wife.
It's been the greatest joy of my life
and I want everyone to have that opportunity.
I live in Canada, where gay marriage is perfectly legal,
and I assure you that gay marriage has not cost me a thing.
Gay marriage has not diminished my marriage one bit.
I hope many, many gay people AND straight people
experience the stability and refuge and joy
that marriage has brought to my life.

Pretty well done. :]
The end was a little corny, but the overall video was amazing.
I just wish our nation would wake up, and realize it's not "us and them" it's "We."

Maybe. But what they DO have in common is that you don't get a voice in whom I marry, just as I have no vote in who you marry.
