Milarepa's teachings are not life denying.. they're one of the best medicines to realize impermanence and treasure life as it really is.. but I also agree that these teachings may not suit for everybody, only truly avalaible for advanced meditators and practitioners.... i myself think i lack enough renunciation yet to put them to practice... I enjoy many pleasures in worldy living... but in the end.. I will have to reborn inside Samsara... who here , dares to say they're liberated..
i think when you start to use words and language in an attempt to expunge truth which is unique to the self, then you have already failed. first, the essence of speech and transmission is deceit. once you realize this, you will know that all you can do is show is the path you journeyed on to arrive there, that is it. :) Truth when you find it is as terrible and liberating as pain, maybe more so, just not in the physical sense of pain as you perceive it. dont be afraid to dive in black oceans :)
ruzickaw, these teachings are not life denying, on the contrary - it's very life approving. Life in its deepest sense. Tibet was economically backward, although I'm pretty sure that there's no other country more advanced spiritually. If only monks were having a good life, why so many lay people are fighting for the freedom of their country? And how do you measure people's happiness?
@bagdcirte Believing in demons and depending on what a crazy oracle says, that you call spiritually advanced? For a modern life it is useless. -People are not fighting for the monks, but for their country. -Even stupid people are happy.
@bagdcirte I respect the post, but your analysis of the political economy of Tibet is off I think. I can't say that Free-Trade capitalism and globalization are not "economically backward", considering it created a system where 4 Billion out of the 6.7 Billion of the world's population live on less than $2/day. Plus, it lead to the suppression of Tibetan culture and their diaspora through Chinese state-capitalism. Economic viability is not the measure of a person, spiritually or other. Thanks.
The only proof of karma you have is your daily experience. Mind has only 2 activities: creating causes (intentions) and experiencing its effects (suffering or happiness). There's no other use of it.
The belief of karma is an inner experience, I can't prof it to you, that's correct, the same way you can't proof me its unexistency.
That's your conclussion , but yet, it doesn't exist out of your mind. The only harm you can suffer is the thought that anyone else is harming your pride, your point of you, or your belief. It's just a lack of understanding that anyone else's point of view is as much important as yours.
Its contradictory if you feel enlightement when just being deluded. The "feeling" of being something has nothing to do with real enlightenment where sensations of all kind and feelings have ceased.
@ruzickaw proof of karma exists when you feel a certain way upon experiencing something. For example, if your loved one passes away and you feel sad, it is proof of karma, because the cognition of some circumstance elicited a psychological response in you. This means that you have some disposition which, under the right conditions gives rise to some state of mind. So there is a cause and effect relationship between what you experience and what state of mind arises afterward. hope this helps.
@ruzickaw "So what?" : The reason this is important is because it means that you have the power to shape your own mind. In other words, what you do and decide, believe and think determines the quality of your experience. Your way of thinking becomes a habit and forms a discernible personality, which then functions on impulse. This impulsive, habitual behavior is fine except for the fact that it is often conceited and perpetuates a suffering mind. Why make yourself suffer when you can be happy?

if he found out that life is a prision, why did he not kill himself to get free? No, he went on living until he died.
All thise life denying teachings have made the old Tibet a backward country, where only the monks had a good life.

@ruzickaw
The prison of life, or Samsara, doesn't end if commiting suicide, thats the ignorance of not knowing cause and effect , or law of karma.
Milarepa's teacher, Marpa, was not a monk and attained same Budhha state of mind.
Enlightenment is not a place or a happiness kingdom like Disneyland: is the peaceful state of mind remaining within its most pure esence.

@andibonnington You are just repeating what you were told by others. There is no proof of karma. - What will you do with your peaceful state of mind?

Try to be happy and don't harm others.

@andibonnington Teaching stupid things to others , is harming them.
If the only proof you have for karma is your inner exterience, it is no proof.
I may feel enlightened and still being just deluded.

@gamma235 Very confused answer. There are always states of mind raising. That is natural. There is always cause and effect. And so what?
