Generaly Lego kits are not so expensive, but technics and mindstorms can build very complex models with gears and other special parts like sensors, cpus, motors etc.. quite easy with high Lego quality. Lego has passed to the modelling side officialy with these two products. Also, NXT is relatively cheap as a fully programmable and designable robotics kit...

for carpet I'd have rotate it around a leg near the front (relative to the direction of travel) until another legs becomes more the front, then rotate around that one, so you don't have so much loss dragging the "rear" leg over carpet.

lol i added one of those things that make it so something can twist 360 and i put weels on those. freakin awsome + it goes REALLY fast! and i put rubber bands on the weels so they can go on any terrain (for grip)
