I recall listening to the radio a number of years ago when the name Pletnev was mentioned for the first time and the presenter said that his transcription of Nutcracker had created a sensation and he was being heralded as a new Horowitz. I immediately went in search of this record , which at the time was not easily available, but I was lucky to find one. It did not disappoint and yes, it also did have that ease and frisson of a Horowitz, as is evident here.
This is beyond amazing... I have no words except I can't imagine how Tchaikovsky could have hated his own creation. Not one piece of music in the Nutcracker showed traces of human imperfection.
@sagalat: Yes, he DETESTED his Nutcracker... it was at the point in his life when he thought he was losing his talents. Writing the ballet wasn't his idea so he wasn't too thrilled with it at first, he was more into writing his opera that would premiere the same night, "Iolanta", which is extremely beautiful & charming but nowhere near as popular as The Nutcracker. What a silly man to think his talent was disappearing. He hadn't even written his arguably greatest masterpiece 6th Symphony yet...
Whenever i want to turn to pure pleasure on the piano, for a combination of imagination, faithfulness & sheer brilliance of execution, Pletnev in his Nutcracker Suite has few equals in modern pianism.
Great transcription of 1,2 and3. But the Intermezzo I didn't appreciated soooo much...
I know a transcription of the Intermezzo, by Iran Levin, conductor of the São Paulo's Federal University Orchestra (Brazil) that, by my ears, sounds more "realistic" with the orchestral version... You all have to hear it! I'll try to find some interpretation.. This transcription is newest.
Anyways, Pletnev's is great too, even I like so much his works...
I like this transcription. Up there with transcriptions of Liszt and Horowitz. I'm not a fan of big, notey transcriptions that throw in stuff just for show. It takes away from the piece as a whole.
Congratulations to Pletnev for actually getting this.
What's annoying is that I can't find this recording on Amazon or another 3rd party seller at a reasonable price (i.e. below 30 US dollars) because is by far my favorite Pletnev recording. Tchaikovsky and Pletnev is a perfect marriage of aesthetic sensibilities.
@Pogouldiwitz Search for "Melodiya" - the first result should be that label's sampler with Pletnev's 1978 recording of the Nutcracker suite on it. At the time of this writing, it costs under $5.
I cant find the sheet :/
