The age of consent was between 10 and 12 in the US ! You are mistaken about 16-year-olds not knowing what to do. Each person is different. There are youngsters who are more mature than 20 or 30-year-olds. In some societies, girls do a lot of housework, shop, and take care of younger siblings, and even sell in the marketplace with their mothers. I have seen and met some.

The age of consent was between 10 and 12 in the US ! They can get married before that with their parent's or guardian's permission, but according to Muslims, the girl would have to give consent. Apparently, there the case is that the girl was Sold to the man and without her consent, so that is not legal.
