  • i read the book on the movie much much better then the movie.i have much respect for these men who served at iwo. they just wanted to return to their unit and the press got caught up in the romance that they thought was war. to you who served at iwo i salute you.

  • Nice video, I must commend the author. And I would remind you that Michael Strank was a native of Czechoslovakia, so it's not only you but also our hero.

  • Semper Fi Marines. if you get the chance go to the Marine Corps museum and see the flag that was raised on Iwo

  • This song always gives me chills...Loved they video by the way.

  • Thank You for making this..I have very few pictures that have meaning..The Sir Winston Churchill picture taken by Yousuf Karsh and this picture..Churchill was the face of victory and these men showed no face but gave everything.

  • Back in the 80's when I was in the Danish army looking straight down the soviet military machine I had the picture of the flag raising on mt. Surabachi on my wall over my vunk. The reason: Those guys fought for freedom and I tried to follow theis example. We owe them so much

  • i was in the corps too brother. semper fidelis!

  • @coloradofan9195 Easy for some two bit punk to say. why don't you haul you useless ass on down to Texas and let an old man beat you senseless, punk.

  • @coloradofan9195 I would enjoy beating the shit out of you.

  • Semper Fi

  • I think this video is simply awesome.

  • thank you so much for making this video, for remembering the thousands of kids who died on that forsaken island... for Mike Strank, For Franklin Sousley, For Iggy who died as a POW, for Doc Bradley, For, Tex, For Harlon... and for all the marines who fought valiantly... may their souls rest in peace.

  • Yeah...many damn good Marines died for their brothers in arms and for their nation.

    Semper Fi.

  • thank you so much for making this great!

  • Well done !

    Semper Fi

  • High respect and love to Mr. Bradley, James. Even though a Corpsman is enlisted in the Navy we're all one entity in the field. So when I say Oohrah Devil Dogs that includes Mr. Bradley. Marines and Corpsman train together, shoot the shit together, eat together, and fight together.

  • what about james bradley?

  • James Bradley is the son of one of the Flag Raisers. James Bradley is the son of Naval Medical Corpsman, John Bradley or otherwise known to his fellow Brothers-in-Arms, John 'Doc' Bradley. James Bradley wrote the book, "Flags of our Fathers" in honor of the Flag Raisers on Iwo Jima which of course included his father, also in honor of those who served at Iwo Jima, World War II as a whole, and every major war that ever took place in American History. The book reflects on what a true hero is.

  • Oohrah devil dogs!

  • franklin sousleys my great uncle

  • what is the name of this song i love it Reminds me of my dad and of the ending scene of flags of our fathers blink my eyes alot on that scene

  • my grandfather...

  • hes my great uncle

  • I dont mean that anyone of thoose flag-dudes are My Grandfather, i mean that one ot the Japanese Soldiers Serving There were. :P

  • simper-Fi

  • My Dad was an 18 year old Marine sniper ,only yards away from the flag raisng.Last Year I sprinkled some of that hard-won,bloody black volcanic sand from Iwo,on His grave.

  • God bless them all:)

  • I Dont Want Any I-Hate-you-messeges when i post this, but i support The imperial Japanese Forces In This war,,,

  • Are you from Japanese decent?

  • @habbostrand Im not gonna give you any hate but care to say why? The Japanese did some pretty nasty things to the Chinese.

  • @SlyDessertFox To be honest, i was probably a young idiot back than :P My opinions are fare diffrend now. This must sound as a pathetic excuse, but thats the truth ;)

  • @habbostrand well thats good to know =D

  • Flag raising is not what's important. First or second. All the same. What matters is we took the damned place.

Vietnam 70-71. 7th Marines, 2nd Bt. 1st Div. Semper Fi.

  • urra!!!!!

  • Semper Fi

    2nd Bn 4th Marines

    1996-2006

  • What about the first flag?

  • what about it?

  • Well nobody ever recognizes it. In the opinion of this Marine both should be equally popular.

  • It makes no real difference. First flag, second flag. When the second flag was raised, the battle wasn't even close to being finished, alot of Marines made the ultimate sacrifice on that island both before and after the flag raisings. All that counts is that people remember their scarifice, and if this photo does that for people its good to go in my book.

  • Same here, but the first flag raisers risked their life going up their. That should be remebered too. Doesnt matter, there is only one flag raiser out of all 12 left, and he'll be dead within the next 5-10 years, if hes not already.

  • Is there? I thought the last surviving flag raiser was the Corpsman, and he passed away some time ago. Although I'm not sure, I'll have to look that up.

  • Yeah, either way you look at it, roughly around 25,196 men lost their lives on Iwo Jima.

  • Well really, no matter what way you look at it, too many Marines lost their lives on Iwo.

  • Amen 2 that

  • I wrote a song about the FIRST flag raising called "Fly It High." It is in the 'video response' portion above. Check it out and I hope you like it. It's mostly about Chuck Lindberg: the last one to pass away from the first flag raising.

  • God Bless these brave men and I mean all of them what a part of history. It is so sad that we still have a war today and people are loosing their lives , we will never learn will we?

  • war always was and always will be part of human nature. Thats just how it is. The thing is, you shouldn't feel sorry or sad or pity for soldiers, saliors, Marines and airmen who make the ultimate sacrifice. These are people who pick up a rifle and make a scarifice knowing the consequences and they do they are damn good at what they do. Just honor them, thank them and move on.

  • God Bless America... and unnecessarily long credits within a 2 minute video. HAHA jk man thanks for posting this.

  • My freinds great grand father is Rene .A .Gagnon.

  • I'm from rene's home town Manchester NH

  • although they just raised a replacment flag its still honorable

  • It's humbling to see that they were just kids.

  • Just looking at the photo of them raising the flag, makes me feel proud to be an American.

  • i read the book "flags of our fathers" and it touched me deeply.

  • lol for once there is calm music...most people jsut put rock and heavy metal n shit...oh there is a movie on it too ankebern its good :P

  • Mike is my hero and because of him i am joining the marines

  • i am a native american, i come from the same reservation that ira hayes comes from and he brings honor to my people.

  • letters from iwo jima was japanese, but i feel as if both japanese and allies are good and not bad. both sides allie or not fought bravely and gave honour for their country

  • That was beautiful! Fantastic video, and so emotional;) I'm a South African citizen, we fought on your side, that of the allies in the war, and I also had a few family members in WW2. Thank you America for your help in winning the war. Because of you guys, the rest of us around the world were guaranteed freedom. To the allied heroes of WW2, thank you and God Bless you all ;) And Clint Eastwood's Flags Of Our Father's is an excellent movie :)

  • Mike my hats off to you man..... You're one of my true heros i look up to and I plan to give my life for this country to. You dide when a martar explosion landed near you and a shaflen went in you're heart...... God bless you man

  • they said it was friendly fire that killed him from one of the neighboring vessels. sad ordeal

  • What a wonderful video! May God bless America's Heroes, and may God bless America!!!

Thanks so much for posting this video!!!

  • the movie and book made me relize that they wern't the heroes the heroes are the dead guys i know that when im older i will be able to stand tall and proud as a marine

  • iv seen the movie letters from iwo jima as well

  • hey, ain't it wierd how the picture is still in time, black and white, but these marines were actually livivg this moment in color?

the movie was sad at the end when they're all playin around in the water, ain't it sort of ironic how the guys are enjoying ife swiming while there's a war going on?

i felt sorry for ira hayes most

    good video by the way!!!!

  • yeah i saw iggy in the water

  • whats the name of this song?

  • what's the name of this song?its really sad. the end of the movie made me cry. especially when doc died. isn't it weird how it was a real story that someone saw through their eyes, not just a movie?how thoses marines saw this and actually stood in the island?

  • a really heroic book an the 5 th marines is brotherhood of heros:marines on peleliu

    by bill sloan

  • I thought the ending of the movie was excellent where they go for a swim. Thats actually a tradition to this day for Marines stationed in Okinawa, on the anniversary of the flag raising, they go swimming in the waters off the beach at Iwo To (which is the current name of the island).

  • my cousin was harlon block,

i did cry at the end of the movie

    lol

  • I highly doubt that your cousin stormed the beaches of Iwo Jima. That would make you around 80 years old.

  • i know when he said Doc,They killed me i shedded a tear and my grandma's cousin who was 16 got sniped in the brain by a jap sniper

  • ah thats a bummer. i really mean it too, everyone on that island is a hero because they had the courage and guts to into the military.

  • i almost cried at the end of the movie

  • i know mike strank was killed friendly fire from the ships in the water

  • He won a few bronzes and a purple, John "Doc" Brady

  • SEMPER FI MARINES....SEMPER FI

  • I got a new youtube name, ShishkabobTheGreat

  • Yeah the credits are cool =) first video first time ever using Windows Movie Maker so of course its not difficult to make.

  • in case anyone didint know joe rosenthal is the guy who took that picture

AND MY GOD BLESS THE MARINE CORPS AND THE UNITED STATES!

  • @Eddyisrich403 american soldiers

  • @aaron654lo no it was joe rosenthal an AP reporter

  • wow, a video like that would take me 3 minutes to take and u put so much time into the credits, wow MUFFINS!!!- Chubby

  • Yeah i know but since it was easier to just have the marine corps (cuz thats the most people on the island) so i just put that. But you are right.

  • It wasn't just the Marine Corps. you know... "Doc" was a Navy Corpsman a.k.a. a Medic, other wise pretty good.
