Ok I've played a little more around with this brewer and it's very forgiving. You can get clear cup with the acidity or heavy winey body all depending on grind fines and contact time. I still find it too muted and I have to use 28g for around 9oz of brewed coffee when in other methods I can use 24g for 10oz of brewed coffee.
But what I do like is that coffee with lot of earthy tones like Sumatra or Selebes can be balanced out in this method so those are the coffees I like the most in Aeropress.
@klarinetta Thanks for the follow up! I have left this method alone for the most part. I still use it if I get a small sample size, but like you said it is extremely clean. I like it down and dirty ;) I recently saw a metal filter screen that is aeropress compatible and I think I may give that a shot! I like the concept...hate that it strips much of the character from the brew. Take care c[_]
@andreahurley17 No, that was an olivepress. He obviously used a syphon pot when he was at home, but may have opted for the travel french press mug on the road. I think I'll ask him someday ;)
@Gig103 Dude, this was my second video ever. Do I buy from Shock coffee now? Nope...I like fresh roasted goodness, but it took me quite some time to learn about coffee. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Am I the only person who thinks coffees used with this method lost a lot of their characteristic and become so smooth and low in acidity that the cup can only be described as in MONO ????
NB. I think it has nothing to do with paper filter being used as I love Hario and Chemex brewing and I re-use the filters I think up to 10 times each.
why is the grind funnel in the cup? that isnt right. the grind funnel is to direct the grinds into the chamber. you can set the chamber right on your cup
Thanks for commenting but that issue has already been addressed by other commentors. You are correct about the funnel being used for grinds, BUT it is also used for smaller brimmed cups. That is why the funnel is the perfect shape
to fit the bottom of the cylinder. Take care, Nate
You can use whatever you want, but it works best with a fine grind coffee. I grind my own beans, and set the grinder at a setting finer than auto-drip. Hope that answers your question.
Espresso means fast coffee made by pressure so yeah it's espresso, as you said it's more concentrated,, the only thing that could make this not an espresso is that it doesn't really produce the crema unless you push the piston a little harder and squeeses the grounds.
I recommend adding only half of the water, stir, and then add the rest of the water.
You're right and wrong. True espresso is brewed at at least 9 bars of pressure, not likely from the aeropress, and not through a paper filter. The AeroPress does make a smooth cup of coffee though, and I prefer to just drink it straight without adding the hot water. Thanks for the comment!
You''re not supposed to place the Aeropress over the funnel. It rests directly over the cup. The funnel is for pouring in water or the grinds if you're not using the scoop.
You are correct! The funnel is for using when you premeasure whole beans and then transfer directly from the grinder. This was the first time that I used the AeroPress, and I fit nicely together that way. Thanks for pointing out my error.
I think you're wrong. It goes over cups that have smaller mouths. The Aeropress is pretty wide and does not fit on all cups, thus you would use the funnel. The evidence of that is the shape of the funnel matches the shape of the Aeropress.
That is a great use as well, but the instructions state it is for pouring in the grinds. I'm sure you're right though as they do fit nicely together. Thanks for the comments!

jesus christ himself used the aeropress

@andreahurley17 maybe. Before he realized he could just squeeze the espresso out of a hand full of beans.

You can skip from 2:10 to 4:55 to avoid the stupid advertisement for Shock coffee in the middle. Really coffeenate? 1/3 of a video is a commercial?

@klarinetta Yeah and clean. Even the thick Chemex paper does not make the coffee so clean.
klarinetta 11 months ago
@klarinetta The combination of paper filter with only a 10 second steep time gives it a decidedly mellow flavor.
coffeenate1 5 months ago
@coffeenate1 Even upside down with longer steeping time doesn't change things a lot.

You know... For a coffee nut you are surprisingly mellow :P

@GAQ01 I agree. Quite mellow.....

@coffeenate1 UPDATE... This was my second video ever. I now recommend a few things to be done differently!
° Rinse the filter with boiling water prior to adding coffee
° Brew with water that is about 195-200 degrees, not 170 as indicated in their instructions
° Do not use the funnel on the top of the cup. They do say that it can be used, but there is no need to.

Thanks, in that case I have to buy a better coffee mill.

You are correctamundo! I've read this in many places...and have done it myself as well. Now the 300 that come with it is a lifetime supply! :D

You can actually re-use the filters for several presses. Sounds gross but I do it, hahaha.

It's also to be used under the aeropress, as an adapter for smaller cup sizes. That's why it's hexagon-shaped just like the base of the aeropress.
