When I saw him at a masterclass in 2000(ish), he was using a double pedal, but playing both beaters at the same time. He said he did that to get a louder kick drum sound. I guess he got comfortable with alternating. :)

Gadd is not about being the fastest most exciting choppiest drummer. rrdrums you should really stop talking bad about his playing wheh a video like this is playing right before your eyes. He is the most relaxed drummer in the world and plays more in the pocket than anyone out there. his groove is out of this world- and thats what makes him an amazing drummer.

I normally stay out of the drummer bashing, i thinks its so pathetic, all these great musicians all have their own great qualities, I may not a total fan of all of these drummers but I can truly enjoy their playing. When i first heard Steve Gadd I didnt click with his drumming.
But you listen to the complex rhythms he can do- they grow on you (much like a lot of alternative bands do eg sonic youth). @crack87 You don't get it. Its not his technique, its not his rudimental grooves & licks - as you said, thousands of drummers can do that stuff. It's his SOUND. When he plays those licks it sounds like Steve Gadd playing those licks, when you or I play them, it doesnt. Thats why he's so successful and so well rated by the intelligent players out there. And its the same reason hes considered overrated by the players obsessed with speed and chops, who are coincidentally usually short of work...
It is actually the first vid of steve gadd ive ever seen (in my 11 years of drumming)...u now probably act like : wooow he is a drummer for that long and he has not seen steve gadd yet?!, what a noob!
But what i am telling u is, dont overrate his latin grove and latin fillstuff he does, its much easier then u would think...and by the way, I can play the lick he does at the end with one foot so go and give me some negative responses but I was just beeing honest, he is not that great!
@crack87 It may by easier than stuff Terry Bozzio or others are doing, but he makes this easy patterns sound so awesome by combining and variating, that it sounds great. That is also art for me!!
I can't see the point...I mean...to be a great drummer you don't have to di difficult things...it's about taste and touch... if I play 30 minuts a day cannot have the technique of someone that plays 8 hours a day for examle...it doesn't mean that I cannot play better than him in a specific situation, I might have a particular style and sound...anyway this guy has both taste and good technique.
There is not a computer or a machine made to this day that can do what this guy does on a drum kit ! Truly amazing skill and technique from a true genious
To make a recreation of this guy's flow and timing you'd have to have a digital machine capable of 1000 or 1500 bpm resolution in order to adequately slip and shift the notes so they sound natural and human. Then, they might as well be left to a guy that can put them down on the first take, live, like Gadd.
@COdrums4life Yeah...just subtract all feeling that Gadd has. Weckl is beastly technical...but everything he plays, sounds just that...technical. Gadd has more "heart and soul" in his playing than Weckl EVER will....even though Weckl is undisputably faster and more technical.
@salemetro What COdrum doesn't seem to realize or "know" is that Gadd is a major influence to Weckl. To say that one is better than the other is NOT why these two started playing. Like ALL drummers, we play because we love it. And on that day one decides "they or he" is better than everyone else, they them miss the entire point of playing music... Get out of the way Elvis, Frank Zappa is the real KING. :D

There is technique, and then there is heart. Gadd is all heart. He never betrays the ground rythm, with spectacular moves, that makes the mind slip from the base of it all, the rythm or pulse. There is no substitute for reality, only the possibility for us to celebrate it! There is no off switch for a genius, cause the genius is the heart that stays in tune with reality, like the heart of mr. Gadd. Turning that off, is loosing it all. I normally stay out of the drummer bashing, i thinks its so pathetic, all these great musicians all have their own great qualities, I may not a total fan of all of these drummers but I can truly enjoy their playing. Face it, "WE" ain't playing on major record releases, plus I don't see Steve Gadd on here giving a Rats Ass about any of us...And if he did have a comment to make, I;m sure he would have higher class to not make such comments.

@Youwishyoucouldplay .....................and there is no disqualifying statement, those arent the only sticks i use, their good sticks and i like to use 'em every now and then, any good drummer is going to try out different sticks and see wat sounds they can get from them you retard. and from your comments i know a lot more than you do obviously. and metal isnt all i play dumbass, i play plenty of styles, its just wat i like most. i play funk, latin, and all forms of rock.

When i first heard Steve Gadd I didnt click with his drumming.
But you listen to the complex rhythms he can do- they grow on you (much like a lot of alternative bands do eg sonic youth). You see these douchebags who post up drum cover after drum cover of say the latest Foo Fighters song, if they would just train their ears to listen to subtle drumming, they could learn a great deal from Steve- not saying that he cant ROCK THE FUCK OUT! 1:39

@crack87 You don't get it. Its not his technique, its not his rudimental grooves & licks - as you said, thousands of drummers can do that stuff. It's his SOUND. When he plays those licks it sounds like Steve Gadd playing those licks, when you or I play them, it doesnt. Thats why he's so successful and so well rated by the intelligent players out there. And its the same reason hes considered overrated by the players obsessed with speed and chops, who are coincidentally usually short of work...

It is actually the first vid of steve gadd ive ever seen (in my 11 years of drumming)...u now probably act like : wooow he is a drummer for that long and he has not seen steve gadd yet?!, what a noob!
But what i am telling u is, dont overrate his latin grove and latin fillstuff he does, its much easier then u would think...and by the way, I can play the lick he does at the end with one foot so go and give me some negative responses but I was just beeing honest, he is not that great!

I can't see the point...I mean...to be a great drummer you don't have to di difficult things...it's about taste and touch... if I play 30 minuts a day cannot have the technique of someone that plays 8 hours a day for examle...it doesn't mean that I cannot play better than him in a specific situation, I might have a particular style and sound...anyway this guy has both taste and good technique.

To make a recreation of this guy's flow and timing you'd have to have a digital machine capable of 1000 or 1500 bpm resolution in order to adequately slip and shift the notes so they sound natural and human. Then, they might as well be left to a guy that can put them down on the first take, live, like Gadd.

@COdrums4life Yeah...just subtract all feeling that Gadd has. Weckl is beastly technical...but everything he plays, sounds just that...technical. Gadd has more "heart and soul" in his playing than Weckl EVER will....even though Weckl is undisputably faster and more technical.

@salemetro What COdrum doesn't seem to realize or "know" is that Gadd is a major influence to Weckl. To say that one is better than the other is NOT why these two started playing. Like ALL drummers, we play because we love it. And on that day one decides "they or he" is better than everyone else, they them miss the entire point of playing music... Get out of the way Elvis, Frank Zappa is the real KING. :D

True enoughabout Buddy.But he used so many paradiddle based rudi's . Those paras dictate a constant feft hand alternated downbeat at least. Also he was a freak of nature i do believe. Something extra in the muscular dept of the wrist/finger forearm dept.

They made up their own way of doing things by taking what someone showed them and saying im going to do it my way. Take a lesson from the dudes you and we idolize and try to bring your own voice to the instrument. There is technique, and then there is heart. Gadd is all heart. He never betrays the ground rythm, with spectacular moves, that makes the mind slip from the base of it all, the rythm or pulse. There is no substitute for reality, only the possibility for us to celebrate it! There is no off switch for a genius, cause the genius is the heart that stays in tune with reality, like the heart of mr. Gadd. Turning that off, is loosing it all. They are gone pro for a very good reason, they are all happy to be where they are no matter what the difference in their playing.
